Women have always been at the heart of economic activity, a truth that endures through generations. Today, with greater access to information and a global push for financial independence, women are boldly claiming their economic power. From driving economic growth as entrepreneurs to influencing policy and leading businesses, women’s financial autonomy is reshaping communities and economies worldwide. Figures like Ngozi OkonjoIweala, the first female Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, exemplify how economic leadership can inspire and transform societies.

With money comes freedom, authority, influence, power, and independence. In the film “Adire,” when Asari decides she’s had enough of her pimp, Captain, who sees her as nothing more than a commodity, it’s her financial independence that enables her to break free, reinvent herself as Adire, and start a successful business. “Adire” illustrates how economic power allows one to reclaim one’s identity and shape one’s future.

“Adire” is not alone in highlighting this theme. Here are five more films that explore how women harness their financial strength to rewrite their stories and drive societal change:

“King of Boys”

In “King of Boys,” Eniola Salami is one of Nollywood’s most formidable female characters. As a wealthy businesswoman with a complex past, Eniola leverages her financial resources to navigate the political landscape and assert her influence in a male-dominated world. Her economic power grants her the ability to make strategic moves, eliminate threats, and maintain control over her empire, defying traditional gender roles and showcasing how wealth can be a powerful tool for success.

Lionheart

As the executive director of her family’s bus company, Adaeze is well-versed in the company’s finances and operations. When her father falls ill, her initial expectation to take over is dashed when her uncle is appointed instead.

Nevertheless, Adaeze’s financial prowess shines through. She successfully negotiates key investments that keep the company afloat amid a financial crisis. She prevents a potential takeover when she secures essential contracts that boost the company’s revenue and expertly manages the complexities of debt restructuring. Adaeze became the lifeblood of the company

To imagine a Lionheart, where Adaeze is without any economic power would be to imagine a Lionheart transport company that failed.

Wives on Strike 2

In “Wives on Strike 2,” domestic violence is portrayed as a severe issue exacerbated by the victims’ lack of economic power. When a woman is murdered by her husband, her friends come together, using their limited resources to seek justice. They hire a vigilante to extract a confession from the perpetrator, stepping in where traditional systems fall short.

Studies show that increasing a woman’s economic power can reduce her risk of violence, as financial independence lessens her dependence on abusive partners. Without economic power, many women feel trapped in or return to abusive relationships.

The women’s collective action and advocacy for systemic change demonstrate how economic power can drive social justice and political activism. The film also highlights the support provided by the deceased woman’s friend, who takes in her daughter and helps her find her voice.

Breaded Life

A bread seller, Todowedo manages her small business by purchasing bread from the bakery and selling it throughout the day. This independent venture allows her to support herself, covering her rent and personal expenses without relying on local bigwigs like Jobe or the bakery owner, Jugunu, who have made advances toward her. Her financial self-sufficiency is evident in her ability to help others, such as accommodating Sunmi when he is stranded and introducing him to the bakery owner for employment opportunities. In Breaded Life, we see Todowede’s economic autonomy through her resilience and capacity to support and uplift others within her community.

Citation

In “Citation,” we shift our focus to Ibukun Awosika, who plays herself in the film. In a panel hearing, when Professor N’Dyare attempts to undermine a young female panel member by flaunting his academic credentials, Ibukun counters by listing her own impressive qualifications, which far exceed his. Her extensive credentials ensure that the professor cannot intimidate her, allowing the panel to proceed with their investigation and deliver appropriate justice.

Her assertive leadership in the panel challenges the professor’s arrogance and demonstrates how her professional stature and economic success empower her to uphold justice and authority in the face of misconduct.

All the movies mentioned—”Adire,” “King of Boys,” “Lionheart,” “Breaded Life,” and “Citation”—are available to stream on Netflix, while “Wives on Strike 2,” can be found on Prime Video.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Segilola Ogidan takes us through her inspiring career journey, from her directorial debut to her AMVCA nomination, and more.

In our previous feature, we caught up with Uzor Arukwe, who talked to us about his acting journey, Hollywood premiere experience and his role in the recent film “What About Us?.If you missed it, catch up here.

Segilola Ogidan has brought life to diverse characters—Tonye in “The Men’s Club,” Ajike in “A Naija Christmas,” and Jumoke in “Over The Bridge,”—each showcasing her versatility as an actor. A media arts graduate from Royal Holloway, University of London, Segilola has remained unwaveringly authentic throughout her journey.

While many actors find their passion for the craft later in life, Segilola knew from childhood that she was destined for the stage. She grew up watching Dorothy Dandridge films, imagining herself in the roles Dorothy played.

Today, Segilola is not only an accomplished actor but also a director and writer. Though she wears these multiple hats with grace, acting is where her heart truly lies. Her role in “Over The Bridge” earned her a Best Lead Actress nomination at this year’s AMVCAs, solidifying her status as a leading lady in Nollywood and an emerging star on the international stage.

When she’s not on set or actively mummying her two energetic boys, you’ll find Segilola absorbed in a good book. If she weren’t in the film industry, she dreams of living in Mougins, a picturesque village in the South of France, where she’d run a cozy café, Lola’s Café, offering delightful coffee, baked goodies, and beautiful art.

In our conversation, Segilola reflects on her experiences as a writer, actor, and director, shares her thoughts on the evolving landscape of Nollywood, and offers a hint about her upcoming project—a Wole Soyinka biopic.

***

Hi Segilola, it’s super nice to have you on BellaNaija’s Meet the Star. How are you doing?

Hi BellaNaija! I’m very well thank you, thanks for having me.

When you’re not on set, either acting or directing, what do you love to do in your free time?

I’m a wife and a mum of two wonderful boys who keep me very busy and on my toes! When I’m not actively “Mummying.” which is hardly ever, I’m completely lost in a book! I LOVE to read.

You’ve made a name for yourself as a writer, director, and actor—out of these three roles, which one brings you the most fulfilment and joy?

I would say acting. It’s really not easy walking in someone else’s shoes and making millions of people believe you’re that character. So when I get the opportunity to sink my teeth into complex roles that are far from who I am, and I succeed in execution, it fills me with such fulfilment and joy.

You have a B.A. in Media Arts and a Master’s degree in Cinema Studies. Did you always know you wanted to be an actor?

Oh yes! Since I was a little girl! I used to watch Dorothy Dandridge movies and imagined I was the one playing the roles she played. Another thing I did and still do is I would create scenarios and act them out in front of the mirror. My family members (including my children) find it so odd when they catch me doing it!

Let’s talk about “Tainted Canvas,” your directorial debut. What was it like stepping behind the camera and bringing your creative vision to life?

So before “Tainted Canvas,” I had been behind the camera in producer roles. I had also directed a couple of short films, so it wasn’t new to me. However the intensity of the script, it’s quite an emotional drama, as well as shooting in Nigeria was a whole new and exhilarating experience. Also, the amount of time it took for principal photography as a director was a whole new experience and my, was it draining, because as a director, your brain is literally in overdrive, with NO BREAKS! When I act, I only come in on my scheduled days, so I have breaks, however, when I direct, I’m involved right from inception. I think the intensity was further exacerbated because I also WROTE the script! Lol. So literally from the very beginning to the very end, I was heavily involved.

“Over The Bridge” was a success, with multiple nominations and awards including Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography at the AMVCAs. How did it feel to be part of such an acclaimed film?

First of all, let me just say that I was on cloud 9 when I got my Best Lead Actress nomination for the film!!! Ok, that’s out of the way (lol), being part of “Over The Bridge” was definitely orchestrated by God and it’s so telling because of the huge success of this beautifully emotive and nuanced film. Also, I would say that the film has done well to seal my place as a leading lady in Nollywood as well as an actor to watch out for in the international space.

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

That I’m a fantastic cook and I’m a great baker. I be throwing it down in the kitchen!

If someone hasn’t seen any of your films yet, which one would you recommend they start with, and why?

I would suggest starting with “A Naija Christmas” simply because it’s fun, light-hearted and Christmassy! I mean, who doesn’t love a good Christmas movie? I know I do.

As a filmmaker, what’s your take on the direction Nollywood is heading in?

Are there any changes in storytelling or production that you’d like to see? Nollywood is an enigma! One minute I think the direction it’s taking is clear and the next minute, it completely switches and one goes back to being confused by it. One thing I would say is that I am happy about the constantly improving production quality and the fact that filmmakers are taking elements like the story and performances more seriously. The industry is definitely on an upward trajectory and more people in the international space are taking more of our productions more seriously. So it’s looking positive all around. Also, I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing more female Directors killing it!!

If you weren’t involved in acting or filmmaking, what other career do you think you’d be pursuing?

Oh, I would totally own a Café and an art gallery! My retirement plan is to own a Café in Mougins (a stunning quiet village in the South of France) where I sell amazing coffee (I’m a coffee connoisseur) and my baked goodies and beautiful art (some that I’ve painted as well as acquired during my travels). You come in, have great coffee and pastries, relax and buy art. It’ll be called Lola’s Café. Can you tell I’ve thought about this? Lol!

Finally, out of all the amazing projects you’ve worked on, which one has been the most rewarding for you, and why does it hold that special place?

It has to be “Over The Bridge.” I went through some deep life changes during the shoot and I grew a lot as a woman, a creative, a mum, a wife and as an actor. It marks my evolution and ascension into the next level and phase of my life where I find I’m in a much happier and more secure place.

Thank you so much for chatting with us, Segilola! We’re excited to see what’s next for you.

Thank you so much for having me! Such an honour. I’m super excited for you to see my next film too…a hint…it’s the Wole Soyinka Biopic.

The movie, set to debut in cinemas on September 13th, is already being hailed by film critics as an inspiring and hard-hitting story, marking Nigeria’s first foray into the world of football-themed cinema.

‘When Love Strikes’ was produced in association with Get Reel Production owned Breath of Life actor  Eku Edewor and features a star-studded cast led by AMVCA-winning actor Osas Ighodaro and rising talent Natse Jemide, best known for his role in the Netflix hit series Far From Home.

It also features stand-out performances from an ensemble cast, including Bimbo Akintola, Zubby Michael, Sunshine Rosman, Jimmie Akinsola, Vine Olugu, Chuks Joseph, Demola Adedoyin, Taye Arimoro, and Suo Chapele.

The electrifying trailer, which unveils breathtaking snippets from the movie ahead of its much-awaited cinematic release, follows a teaser that sent Nigerian moviedom into fever-pitch anticipation.

The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), the co-director of the record-breaking A Tribe Called Judah, and boasts a heavy-weight production crew alongside Inkblot co-founders Chinaza Onuzo, Zulumoke Oyibo and Damola Ademola, who also serve as Executive Producers.

We are so pleased with the work done by Degzy and the entire cast and crew, and we are confident that this film will resonate deeply with audiences of all ages, everywhere.” Ademola added.

In 2019, the September issue of British Vogue, curated by Meghan Markle in collaboration with editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, spotlighted women who were shifting the dial and making a positive impact globally. Among these influential women was Nigeria’s renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Five years later, Vogue Magazine invited the 2019 cover stars to nominate their champions for 2024 and beyond. Partnering with brands like BMW, Nike, YouTube, and eBay, Vogue aimed to “shine a light on people who are changing the world and who devote their lives to others,” as Edward Enninful expressed. For this special feature, Chimamanda nominated Nigeria’s iconic actor, Ego Boyo.

Chimamanda described Ego Boyo as “an iconic figure since my teenage years, when she starred in the seminal 1990s Nigerian TV drama Checkmate. Her character challenged accepted norms of what women could be.” Beyond her work on-screen, Boyo is “actively involved in charity work focused on women – combating sexual violence against women and girls in Nigeria, highlighting women’s education and healthcare,” Chimamanda elaborated. “Today, she continues to be a role model for young Nigerian women – with her quiet glamour, her depth, and her dedication to producing quality work. An absolute class act.”

Reacting to the nomination, Ego Boyo expressed her gratitude:

I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized as one of British Vogue’s ‘Forces for Change,’ nominated by the remarkable Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. As we continue to navigate and influence the ever-changing landscape of our world, I am reminded of the power of storytelling, advocacy, and quiet perseverance. My journey has been long, but each step has been meaningful and purposeful. This recognition fuels my commitment to contribute positively to the narratives we create, especially for future generations. My deepest thanks to Vogue and dearest Chimamanda for this acknowledgment.

Ramsey Nouah has had success directing two of Nollywood’s top films: “Living In Bondage: Breaking Free” and “Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story.” Both films, which earned him Director of the Year honours at the Best of Nollywood Awards (2020) and AMVCAs (2022), are reimaginings of Nollywood classics. While it’s not uncommon for actors to step into the role of a director, tackling a directorial debut by remaking beloved classics—treasured by a generation who holds them dear—is an endeavour far from easy.

“When doing a remake, it’s actually more challenging because you’re trying to resonate with the original audience while appealing to a new one,” Ramsey tells BellaNaija. “You want to bring in a new angle without losing either demographic. That felt really compelling when I did the remakes.”

Despite the inherent challenges of reinterpreting these classics, one cannot overlook how masterfully Ramsey executed the task, a sentiment well encapsulated by the popular Gen Z phrase, “he killed it.”

Now, Ramsey steps into new territory with Tòkunbọ̀, a crime thriller that marks his directorial foray into original storytelling. His preference for the kinds of movies he directs reflects his inclinations—he is drawn to the darker aspects of narrative. “I’m a sucker for dark elements, like dark comedies and shades, but the story wasn’t meant to be dark. It was intended to have a lot of suspense. So I tried to add a bit of darkness, which made it more challenging, adding depth and other elements,” he shares.

Similar to his experience directing the classics, helming Tòkunbọ̀ was no easy feat. The Lagos-born actor confesses that the process was somewhat overwhelming, as he aimed to surpass his previous work, an effort that took a toll on him.

Tòkunbọ̀ is a Yoruba name given to a child born abroad and brought back home. It is also a colloquial term for imported second-hand goods, particularly cars. Gideon Okeke stars as Tòkunbọ̀, an ex-car smuggler, determined to turn his life around. Driven by the desire to be a devoted husband and father to his gravely ill 18-month-old baby, he longs for the simplicity of a normal life. But life can be tricky. One minute, Tòkunbọ̀ is searching for legitimate ways to raise funds for his child’s medical bills; the next, he finds himself entangled in a dangerous situation. With only three hours to deliver a government official’s daughter to her captor, he faces the harrowing possibility of losing his family if he fails.

Gideon describes Tòkunbọ̀ as “fast-paced with a pulse.” It has a heartbeat,” he says. Although he has starred in major, multi-million-dollar films, no project has resonated with him as profoundly as Tòkunbọ̀. He admits the film “kicked his butt.” On an intensity scale, Tòkunbọ̀ was a solid 10 for Gideon. “It was intense from day one. It was challenging every day for everyone involved—actors, producers, directors. We faced obstacles daily, and before we knew it, we were 45 days in.”

Born in Lagos and raised in Ajegunle, Gideon was drawn to the role due to Tòkunbọ̀’s relatability as a character. He found a profound connection in portraying an ordinary man who starts his day at 8 a.m. and ends it around midnight, navigating the complexities of daily life. “The guy was going through it and I had my own fair share of it too. So it was easy to connect with something I was dealing with or something he was dealing with.”

Gideon hopes this authenticity resonates with everyone who watches the film. He believes that a film loses its essence if viewers can’t see a reflection of themselves in the characters.

He hopes the everyday Nigerian, and anyone can see their struggles mirrored in Tòkunbọ̀’s story. “It’s the same 24 hours, but we really run a mile over it. I hope the film resonates with the average person across societal classes—it’s for humanity, not just Nigerians.”

Beyond the gripping narrative Tòkunbọ̀ offers, the film explores pressing issues such as corruption, crime, power struggles, and sexism. Ramsey explains that his intent was to capture various facets of the social fabric and reflect the current realities within our society.

In a world where women are often marginalised, underrepresented in leadership roles, and forced to choose between career ambitions and family life, Ramsey confronts these challenges head-on, reminding us that women can balance both realms.

“I was trying to see how we can emasculate the essence of the power of women in society, emphasising their capabilities and potential. I focused on addressing sexism, highlighting the importance of empowering women. I also approach it from the woman’s perspective, ensuring an emotional connection to the issue. This angle allows her to make a critical choice between her work and the demands placed on her, striving to maintain power in both areas without compromise.

Despite the pressures, she doesn’t give in to what others demand. Instead, she tries to navigate the situation, showcasing that a woman’s strength is multifaceted. I emphasised this strongly as I believe it to be a compelling way to push the agenda of women’s empowerment.”

Now streaming on Netflix, Ramsey characterises Tòkunbọ̀ as a “good thriller” and is hopeful about how viewers will perceive and receive the film.

“I don’t have the foresight into the expectations of what people will say. I just keep it open and remain positive. My only wish is that they all love it. And if they love it, then that’s good enough for me.”

Filmmaker Eyo Emmanuel with Richmond Amechi, brings a compelling family drama to life in the upcoming film “Broken Portrait.” This emotional narrative unpacks the impact of drug addiction on a family’s fragile bonds, shedding light on the hidden struggles and resilience of those affected.

Written and directed by Eyo, and co-produced by Richmond, the story follows newly engaged couple Ivie Idahosa (31) and Bassey Enobong (33) as they prepare for a weekend visit to Ivie’s family. Despite her initial reservations, Ivie agrees to take Bassey home, unaware of the tensions that will unfold. The calm quickly turns to turmoil with the arrival of Ivie’s younger brother, Osaze, fresh out of rehab. As secrets surface—revealing Osaze’s struggles with sobriety—the family must come together to support him in his fight for recovery.

According to Eyo, “The vision of the film is to show the devastating effect of drug addiction on the family unit.” The film offers a fresh perspective, often overlooked, on the burden families bear when a loved one faces addiction.

The cast includes Teni Aladese, Ngozi Nwosu, Taye Arimoro, Gbubemi Ejeye, Floyd Igbo, and Eniola Jordan. The first looks offer a glimpse into the emotional depth and tension that will grip audiences as the family faces heartbreak and hope.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Uzor Arukwe talks about his career journey, his Hollywood premiere experience  and his role in the recent film “What About Us?

In our previous feature, we caught up with Folu Storms, who talked to us about her lawyer-to-media star journey, her signature Afrocentric style and her role in the upcoming Nora Awolowo‘s upcoming movie “Red Circle.” If you missed it, you can read it here.

From “Tonnie Fishbrain,” a film he did out of pure passion without receiving a dime, to starring in the highest grossing Nollywood movie “A Tribe Called Judah,” Uzor Arukwe has proven his versatility and resilience. Overcoming the typical challenges faced by those breaking into Nollywood without an easy path, Uzor has not only earned his place in the Nigerian film industry but also established himself as a force to be reckoned with. His journey has been marked by continuous growth and evolution, with no signs of slowing down.

The economist-turned-actor recently returned from Los Angeles, where he attended the premiere of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.” In our conversation, Uzor shares the beginnings of his acting journey, the challenges he has faced, and the pivotal movie that changed his career trajectory. He also gives us a glimpse into his Hollywood premiere experience, including the thrill of being in the same space as Eddie Murphy, and hints at the possibility of seeing him in a Hollywood film in the near future.

***

Hi Uzor, it’s super nice to have you on BellaNaija Meet the Star. How are you doing?

I’m great. I thank God. I’m taking it one day at a time, so yeah, it’s been good.

You just returned from LA for the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley premiere. What was it like experiencing the glitz and glam of a Hollywood premiere for the first time?

It was swell. It was amazing. It’s the closest I’ve been to Hollywood. Being in the same space as the greats, like Eddie Murphy and others I can’t quite remember, was incredible. Most of the movie stars were there, and some other friends like Big Sean and Jay Pharoah. It felt like I was getting closer to my dream. Every African or Nigerian artist dreams of starring in Hollywood movies, and being in that space just made me feel like I’m getting closer. It was such a breath of fresh air. Yes, it was great, to be honest.

And you were the only Nigerian actor at the premiere. Does this signify a possible crossover to Hollywood?

I believe it signifies a possible crossover to Hollywood. As I said earlier, it’s the dream of every African or Nigerian artist to star in Hollywood movies. Being in the same space as these great people makes you feel like you’re getting closer. God is working and making sure you’re getting closer. It’s not just about being in the same space, but also in the same films as them.

As for what was responsible for this opportunity, I’m a very versatile actor. I’m good with comedy; I understand comedic timing, punchlines, and drama. Beverly Hills Cop is a serious film with comedic elements, so they wanted someone versatile enough to represent both genres. I feel like I’m one of those actors in Nigeria who can do both drama and comedy, as well as thriller, sci-fi, or horror. Comedic timing and having a natural funny bone aren’t easy to learn. I believe my versatility was a major reason they chose me, and it makes me excited.

Let’s rewind a bit. You have quite an interesting background – balancing economics and business degrees with a passion for the arts. How did you manage these seemingly different paths early on? Did your analytical skills ever come in handy in the world of acting?

I believe my analytical skills played a role, but they are two different skill sets. I’m an economist through and through, and I’m also an actor through and through. I’ve undergone both direct and indirect training in acting, and it’s a skill set I’ve acquired and developed over time. Being an economist has helped my brain muscles to retain lines and to dissect my character, understanding better what my character requires and what is demanded. So yes, no knowledge is ever wasted. All my degrees have helped me become a better actor, but they are indeed two different skill sets.

Speaking of your career changes, the switch from a corporate job to acting couldn’t have been easy. What finally pushed you to take the plunge and fully commit to acting in 2018?

The major reason would be that God made me very uneasy. It wasn’t easy. I had worked for almost 10 years in corporate and still did not find fulfilment or satisfaction. I was climbing the ladder in the business, but I wasn’t fulfiled. Coupled with my boss not being the easiest person to work with, I decided it was time to jump into that scary, uncomfortable zone of my life. I took the leap of faith, and God has been faithful since then.

Did you ever have moments where you questioned your decision and considered going back to a nine-to-five?

Of course, several times. After I left in April 2018, I had a fatal accident in May 2018. I didn’t get a job until August 2018 when Onyinye Udezeh called me to do a film for Iroko. During that period, I was fixing the cars I damaged in the accident, and it was very trying. I was really broke. In August 2018, Onyinye called, and my life gradually started taking a turn. I’m grateful to God for that. I got a job with Keystone Bank, did my medicals, got my offer letter, but decided to focus on my creative skills. Thank God, here I am.

We know your mum championed your acting dreams, but your dad might still be warming up to the idea. How did you navigate these family dynamics and chase your passion?

It’s still difficult because my father hasn’t fully come around. My mom knew this was my calling but was slow to coming around. When she did, she supported and prayed for me, igniting the fire inside me. My father still hasn’t accepted that his son is an actor. It’s a delicate, slippery slope. I’m careful with how I talk and handle myself around him. He’s old now and not as reactive. He’s been hearing about my job, but it’s not easy to navigate. I’m still finding my feet, letting everyone understand that it’s a full-time job, not a hobby. This is what God has called me to do, and I’m glad to be doing it.

The movie “Sugar Rush” seems to have been a game-changer for you. Tell us about the experience and how it impacted your career.

We shot “Sugar Rush” sometime in 2019 or 2018. I was working on an African Magic telenovela called “Unbroken,” where I was on set for about eight months. One night, I came back from work, and while scrolling through Instagram, I saw my colleagues Bimbo Ademoye, Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and others on the set of “Sugar Rush.” I prayed and wished to be part of such films.

The next morning, I saw a missed call from Jade Osiberu on Truecaller, and I was excited because I knew. I called the number back, and she said she wanted me to do a film; apparently, it was “Sugar Rush.” I then spoke with Vinny, one of her team members in production, and we made the deal. I was on set for three days. I was working on “Unbroken” from morning till night, and I would shoot all night on “Sugar Rush” and then go to work. So for the three days I was on the set of “Sugar Rush,” I didn’t sleep much, barely getting four to five hours of sleep in between. But I was willing to do it, and I believe that it changed everything because that was one of my first entrances into cinema. People seemed to like my performance, and then God started doing what He could do, what He would normally do from then on. And yeah, it just changed the entire trajectory of my career, and I’m so grateful to God for that.

Looking back at your journey, from “Tonnie Fishbrain” to “Sugar Rush” to “The Tribe Called Judah” and now “What About Us?”, what has changed the most for you in terms of your approach to acting and the roles you take on?

Let me tell you a fun fact about “Tonnie FishBrain.” It was one of my first films ever, which I did while still in university as part of the Christ Embassy Project. It was a laboUr of love, and I didn’t get paid a dime for it. We shot the film in Ozark Valley in Abia State, and it took almost a month under some of the most challenging conditions. The great, blessed memory, Reginald Ebere, directed the film, which was some sort of musical. It was very tough, but I didn’t mind because I was passionate about it. I didn’t receive any payment for the film, perhaps because I attended Christ Embassy at the time, and they considered it ministry work.

One thing I’ve learned about the arts is that you learn something new every day. Art isn’t like science, where one plus one always equals two. Art is dynamic and constantly evolving. You can never truly graduate from the School of Arts because there’s always more to learn. You strive to be more organic, get comfortable in your own skin, and understand a wider range of emotions and reactions. Since “Tonnie Fishbrain,” I’ve received more training, both direct and indirect, including masterclasses. I have mentors now, like John Ndjama and Stella Damasus, who have influenced my acting techniques. I understand various acting techniques and choose which one to use for particular films, scripts, or sets.

I’ve evolved and continue to evolve in my craft. As Tom Hardy once said, there’s convincing and non-convincing acting. The moment your performance isn’t convincing, it’s a poor performance. I always strive to deliver a convincing performance. Since “Tonnie Fishbrain,” I’ve also been involved in stage plays and dramas. I aim to become more fluid, seamless, and organic in my craft, which I love so much. I’m committed to continually improving and getting better.

Speaking of “What About Us?”, tell us about your experience working on the project. Did you have any favourite scenes or moments?

I did. First of all, it’s a faith-based project, but what I like most about it, or even why I like it so much, is that, as much as it’s faith-based, it’s not screaming “Christian, Christian movie” in your face. It’s not saying, “Oh, I’m a Christian movie.” No, it’s a film that’s relatable because it’s about things that happen in our day-to-day lives. As an actor, we look forward to those scenes where you’re given the freedom to navigate different emotions—from smiling to anger to sadness. There were a lot of moments like that, a funny and emotional rollercoaster, in “What’s About Us.”

There was this dialogue I had with Folu Storms, who played my wife in the film, where we were both crying at the same time. It was beautiful to do. It was a lot of work because it’s an emotional, performance-driven film, and very emotional overall. So, it was tough, but I enjoyed it. As an actor, I’m always up for the task. The more emotionally tasking and daunting the film is, the more excited I get.

Given the increasing popularity of streaming platforms and YouTube for film distribution, are you considering producing films for YouTube? If so, what can we expect from your future projects?

I’m a big fan of the YouTube platform because it has provided livelihoods for many people, including crew members and actors. A lot of people are cashing out, making money, and making a living from that platform. As for whether I will produce content, to be honest, I’m not sure at this moment because I don’t like to follow the bandwagon. I’m a rebel; I’ve always been a rebel. I think that’s why many people call me the dark horse because I hate to conform. I always like to shake things up.

If I ever do something on YouTube, it probably won’t be making films. I might do some other type of content that I love and can relate to. I’m not sure what to call it, maybe not necessarily podcasts, but something related to the arts and actors—perhaps an interview or chat room where actors can express themselves about the films they’ve done. But as for producing, I’m not sure, though that could change tomorrow. I might decide to make a film or some skits; who knows? As an artist, I’m dynamic and cannot be put in a box. So, that’s that for now. If I ever do produce, I’d want to aim high, perhaps not make a film for YouTube but rather for the big screens. If I’m going to do it, I’d rather do it big. I have great respect for the platform and am a big fan of all the work that goes into creating content for YouTube.

What Nigerian song is currently on repeat on your playlist?

“Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo” is one of those songs that isn’t on my playlist but has been living rent-free in my head. I also really like the song “Ogechi“—it’s on repeat on my playlist. I’m a big fan of many Afrobeat artists, from Rema to Wande Cole. Wande Coal’s work, in particular, stands out to me. I also enjoy King Promise’s music.

When you are not gracing the set, what would we find Uzo Arukwe typically doing?

When I’m not gracing the set, you’ll find I like to have drinks, often by myself, maybe in a lounge. I enjoy going to lounges because I can see different people—not necessarily interacting with them but being able to observe and assimilate various characterisations. I watch people a lot, especially when they are in their elements, whether intoxicated or just talking. This helps me learn and build an arsenal in my emotional reservoir that enhances my performances. So, when I’m not on set, I’m either at a lounge having a drink or somewhere listening to great music. Typically, I love movies, and I watch a lot of them. If I’m not in a lounge having a drink, I most probably would be at home watching a movie or at the cinemas. Additionally, I used to do martial arts, though I haven’t trained in a long time, and I also play basketball. Those are the things I do for recreation.

If you had the opportunity to get the government’s attention to grant your wish towards the growth of Nollywood, what would you wish for?

“More money. We need more funding. We need the backing of the government to access locations and sets, including offices in aviation and maritime, trains, airplanes, and boats. Having funding and the necessary paperwork done to access the stadium, national theatre, hospitals, and other places is needed. It’s important to recognise that what we do is a job—a full-time job that requires a lot of work. It’s almost like a military operation, and we take it very seriously. If the government supports us, I’d ask for access to various industries and banks to use different locations and sets, or industries as sets, to truly encapsulate the message we’re trying to convey to the consumers. That’s pretty much it.”

Imagine you flip a coin: heads, you get 100 million naira; tails, zero naira. If you don’t flip at all, you get five million naira guaranteed. Would you take the chance or go with the guaranteed five million?

I will flip the freaking coin. I will flip the coin. I believe in favour, grace and goodwill. I will flip the coin. Five million is a lot of money, but I believe that if I can earn one hundred million, why not go for a hundred million as opposed to settling for five million? To be honest, life has taught me that it’s risky not to take a risk. You know, I feel like there’s a lot more on the other side of fear. So, I would flip the coin. Yep!

Thank you BellaNaija. I see the great work that you guys are doing. Keep doing it. I’m such a big fan. Thank you for having me.

Tradeflow Africa Invests in Uche Chukwu’s ‘Wrong Number’, Spotlighting the African Creative Industry’s Potential https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/07/tradeflow-africa-wrong-number/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 16:06:05 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1665095 Written by Tradeflow Africa

Tradeflow Africa, the ecosystem at the forefront of creating dynamic solutions to the trade challenges confronting Africa, invested in the production of a new movie, “Wrong Number.” Directed by Uche Chukwu, the film is set to hit cinemas on July 19, 2024.

The investment in “Wrong Number” reflects Tradeflow Africa’s commitment to fostering intra-African trade among creatives, and promoting the production of original creative and cultural products.

By supporting this exciting project, Tradeflow Africa aims to stimulate economic activities within the creative sector, encouraging the exchange of unique African stories and talent across the continent and beyond.

As at 2023, intra-African trade stood at only 14.4% of total African exports. The United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) forecasts show the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) could boost intra-African trade by about 33% and cut the continent’s trade deficit by 51%. The potential for growth is immense, particularly within the creative industries, which have seen a significant rise in demand for authentic African content.

Leveraging the increasing adoption of technology for creation and distribution, local creative talent have a rare opportunity to gain wider reach under the AfCFTA which provides access to an integrated 1.3 billion people market. “Wrong Number” is expected to contribute to this upward trend by offering a culturally rich and engaging story that resonates with audiences both within and outside Africa.

Highlighting the importance of this project, Tradeflow Africa’s Founder and CEO said,

We believe that supporting creative projects like ‘Wrong Number’ not only showcases the depth and diversity of African talent but also fosters a sense of unity and economic cooperation across the continent.

As part of the ‘Tradeflow Advocacy’ initiative, our goal is to create more innovative opportunities in the creative industries for the African youth population, enabling them to thrive and reach new markets.

As an African creative, I envision our movie ‘Wrong Number’ showcasing the power of storytelling, and inspiring other young African talent to harness their creativity in producing authentic works that will boost intra-African trade.

This partnership with Tradeflow Africa is a testament to the potential of our creative industries to drive economic growth and cultural unity across Africa,” said Uche Chukwu, Producer and Director of ‘Wrong Number’.

As the film reaches audiences in various African countries, it is anticipated to increase interest in African films, and other creative and cultural products that have continental influence, further promoting intra-African trade.

Bolanle Austen-Peters‘ historical biopic, “House of Ga’a,” is gearing up for its Netflix premiere on July 26th. Set in the 18th century, the biopic explores the rise and fall of Bashorun Ga’a, a ruthless kingmaker who wielded power through deceit and voodoo. Can you recall how Ehi and Peju looked so scruffy in “Òlòtūré: The Journey” that made you wonder if a comb was non-existent in their part of the world? It turns out that Sharon Ooja and Beverly Osu spent the entire duration of filming in Mauritania without combing their hair. This gave them an authentic unkempt look and not one done by a makeup artist.

Four years after the release of “Òlòtūré” on Netflix, EbonyLife Films brings us “Òlòtūré: The Journey,” the sequel to the story of Oloture, a young Nigerian journalist who infiltrated the dark world of prostitution and human trafficking.

In the first part, Oloture exposed a tangled web of violence, corruption, and exploitation. Though trapped, her investigation was far from over.

Set in Lagos, Òlòturé highlights the recruitment of sex workers for overseas exploitation. The film’s intense storytelling and social commentary have sparked important conversations. Now, Mo Abudu, the film’s executive producer, shares some behind-the-scenes secrets from the making of the sequel.

For starters, it took two years to completeÒlòtūré: The Journey,” unsurprising, considering the film’s depth. While the average movie runtime is between 80 and 120 minutes, the unseen effort behind film production is immense. As the saying goes, good things take time.

The film brings us to two African countries: Nigeria (Lagos) and Mauritania. Human trafficking is a national concern in Nigeria, with Lagos identified as a major transit and destination point according to data from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Meanwhile, Mauritania grapples with its human trafficking issues, serving as a source, transit, and destination for victims. The country has emerged as an important transit zone for human smuggling, with migrants from West Africa seeking to reach Europe.

The official language in Mauritania is Arabic, while Fula, Soninke, and Wolof are recognised as national languages. How did the cast and crew communicate with the locals? Enter Google Translate.

For the tanker shoot as seen at the end of the third episode, Mo Abudu revealed the scene was shot inside a real tanker.

Mo Abudu reveals that the tense tanker scene at the end of episode three was filmed inside a real tanker. While there was a heavy downpour in the scene where the tank exploded in episode one, the rain had nothing on the cast and crew, and production continued.

No film production is complete without some lighthearted moments. To maintain high spirits during filming in Mauritania, the cast and crew had a fun 100-meter race. We wonder who won the race.

See some behind-the-scenes photos from the sequel:

It features competitive categories, live screenings, and an annual awards gala in Toronto, typically held between August and October.

Last year, the festival saw outstanding wins by Nigerian actors including Ufuoma McDermott who won the Jury Award for Best Actress in “The New Housekeeper,” Kunle Remi took home the same award for Best Actor for his role in “Flaws,” and Shaffy Bello also received the Best Actress in a Nollywood Film award for her performance in “Identical Justice.”

Nse Ikpe-Etim, Segun Arinze, Richard MofeDamijo (RMD) and Mercy Aigbe, star in “Force Empire,” a new film by filmamker and actor, Ndy Akan. “Force Empire” sheds light on the issue of sexual assault faced by women within the male-dominated Nigerian Police Force, and workplaces in general.

It tells the story of DCP Mfon, portrayed by Nse Ikpe-Etim who is determined to unmask the perpetrator who assaulted and humiliated her protégé, ASP Halima, (played by rising actress, Enwongoabasi Ibom). Traumatised and fearful, Halima’s plight drives Mfon to expose the culprit and other corrupt officers tarnishing the reputation of the Nigerian Police Force, despite fierce resistance from superiors.

In a statement, Ndy Akan explains, “Force Empire” is a film about justice. It aims to highlight and encourage the outstanding police officers within the Nigeria Police Force while also addressing the unfortunate actions of a few that have tarnished its reputation. The film reinforces a vital message consistently communicated by the leadership: that every officer, regardless of rank, will face consequences for any criminal behaviour.”

Rounding out the cast are Tony Umez, Kunle Coker, Sonny McDon, Aniebiet Francis, and Richard Johnson. “Force Empire” hits cinemas nationwide on August 23, 2024.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Folu Storms talks about her lawyer-to-media star journey, her signature Afrocentric style and her role in the upcoming Nora Awolowo‘s upcoming movie “Red Circle.”

In our previous feature, we caught up with Atlanta Bridget Johnson, who talked to us about her role in “Áfàméfùnà,” her multi-African roots, working with Idris Elba, and how her acting has evolved over the years. If you missed it, you can read it here.

A look at any scene of Folu Storms in a film or drama – say the unrelenting Tonye in “The Men’s Club” or the fierce Kelechi in “Crime and Justice Lagos” – and you’d never guess she was once a practising lawyer. It was a secondary school monologue performance of Mark Anthony‘s speech at the funeral of his friend, Julius Ceaser, that ignited her love for acting.

Despite studying law to become a lawyer and solicitor, Folu became a media star. With experience in radio, television and documentary production (“The New Africa,” nominated for an Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award), she now graces Nollywood’s screens. Each media platform, she says “has been a priceless value add to her as a person.”

In this interview, the media star tells us how her acting career began, how she balances her media interests, and her fashion style inspiration.

And even if money weren’t a factor for Folu, her path remains clear: a life steeped in creativity and connection, connecting creativity with knowledge sharing to benefit the audience she serves. Don’t you just admire her?

***

Your journey from being a lawyer to a media star is truly inspiring. Let’s jump back to the beginning. In secondary school, you delivered a powerful speech that impressed everyone. Did that experience spark a realisation about the power of acting?

What a fun memory to flash back to! In secondary school, in what I believe was my first monologue performance, I performed Mark Anthony’s speech at the funeral of his friend, Julius Ceaser. It was a moment where I felt a little transported in time. I felt what Mark Anthony felt: his grief, anger, and despair. That was his best guy and these politicians at his funeral were trying to act like he didn’t contribute to the growth of Rome.

That opportunity to perform such a powerful bit of Shakespeare’s writing, I think, gave birth to a true love of acting in me. The ability to not just feel what that character felt, but to share that feeling with your audience and have them grasp that… that is a powerful gift and I don’t take that for granted.

Following that, you pursued law and became a barrister and solicitor. What made you decide to take the leap into the creative world?

As a kid, back then, you were only really exposed or guided to certain professions and the creative world was not on the list, so I just followed the path I saw and was attracted to. Then as you know, it’s hard to dismiss what is inside you. Luckily I was presented with an opportunity to work on radio as an on-air personality, interviewing people from all walks of life and sharing their stories and gifts with the audience. The legal world requires creative thinking, so it was not as big a leap as one would first imagine.

On a more reflective note, how do you think your legal background has helped you in your creative career, if at all?

As a lawyer, you deal with diverse people who become your clients or colleagues. To understand your clients, colleagues and the cases you take up, you need to learn about the things that matter to them: their personal lives and businesses. It teaches you how to ask questions and listen to answers. I believe the legal practice teaches a certain level of creative thinking. I learned to adapt myself to better understand and convey the requisite information.

You’ve thrived in radio, television, and documentary production with “The New Africa.” Looking at these different media platforms, is there one you find most fulfilling or enjoyable?

This is one of my favourite questions because the joy I gained from each experience is immeasurable. The one thing that encompasses all three is the knowledge gained; from interactions with the radio listeners to understanding the character I’m playing on TV and film to extensive research and interviewing people for a documentary. I have to say, my media work has been a priceless value add to me as a person.

Your filmography showcases your range, from Chidinma to Aisha. Is there a particular type of character you gravitate towards or enjoy portraying the most?

All these characters are a gateway into worlds I would most likely not live or experience (in their unique ways). So I would love to play as many diverse characters as possible so I can experience a plethora of diverse journeys through them.

Speaking of film, you recently wrapped up on the set of Nora Awolowo’s upcoming film “Red Circle,” and you worked alongside veteran actress Bukky Wright, Mike Afolarin, and Tobi Bakre to mention a few. What drew you to the project and what should we expect from your role?

The first thing that drew me to the project was Nora, one of the EPs and the director of photography on the project. We had been working together on a previous set when she asked If I would consider the project. I said I would. One thing led to another and by the time the final draft of the script was out, I was incredibly excited to inhabit the world of Fikayo Holloway and work with one of the youngest and most dynamic team of filmmakers out there. The multi-faceted and complex relationships in this story are intriguing, visually it is so gorgeous, gosh! The audience should expect to be entertained!

You rock unique hairstyles and incorporate Afro-themed pieces. What inspires your style choices, and how do you think fashion ties into self-expression for you?

Fashion and self-expression go hand in hand for me. I’m a believer in being authentic, comfortable and creatively free to express. I enjoy infusing elements of Nigeria and Africa in my style choices because it is a part of who I am and I think we are such a beautiful and diverse people. Nigerian people shine and when we set our minds to it, we are truly excellent. So you will usually catch me wearing Nigerian designers or using made-in-Nigeria products. I believe there is economic power for us as a people if we keep our money moving within certain communities.

What piece of advice would a young adult trying to find their path in the creative industry?

Hone your craft. If you can afford to get formal training, then do it. If not, consume all you can about your chosen path then practice alone and with others. Just become that goal.

Now, let’s get a little lighter. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Easy for me: Flight.

Imagine a trip to anywhere in the world for pure creative inspiration, with no budget limitations. Where would you choose to go, and why?

If I could choose anywhere in the world with no budget limitations, I would choose somewhere elevated and high up almost in the clouds. There’s a school of thought that says you think better at elevated levels and I also believe the best inspiration comes from Nature, so I would find myself a quiet cabin near the mountains somewhere in Hawaii, where I can sit high up near the volcanoes, but swim in beautiful oceans and feel connected to the divine.

We wouldn’t be surprised if you stepped into the studio to record a song. So are there any hidden talents you possess that we might not know about?

Most people are surprised to learn that not only do I love to dance, but that I move pretty well too. I spent a lot of time in secondary school and university putting on public dance performances. At one point in my life, I thought I could be a backup dancer for Missy Elliot.

If money wasn’t a factor, what would you choose to do for the rest of your life?

Even though it sounds cheesy to say it, I would choose exactly what I’m doing, a life steeped in creativity and connection. I was not forced into this path, I chose it and by God’s grace, I will continue to find ways to connect creativity with knowledge sharing that benefits the wider community and audience I serve.

To wrap it up, what song are you currently loving that you think everyone should listen to?

Can’t lie, Tems‘ version of “Love Me Jeje” has me in a chokehold right now. I love her voice and this song is a classic she’s brought back beautifully. I’m on that wave right now and I think the whole world should be too!

When you hear Toyin Tomato, one name alone comes to mind. If you guessed Sola Sobowale, you’re right! Describe her as a Nollywood icon, and you’ll be right too. Before her breakout performance in the 2021 popular drama series “Super Story: Oh Father, Oh Daughter,” Sola had acted in evergreen dramas like “Village Headmaster,” “Mirror In The Sun,” and films like “Asewo To Re Mecca (1992).” She also acted in Tade Ogidan’s productions like “Dangerous Twins” and “Family on Fire.”

In 2003, she stepped away from the limelight. In a conversation with Teju Babyface on “The Deep Dive” podcast, Sola disclosed that she stepped away from the acting scene to focus on raising her children in the United Kingdom. Fast forward to 2016, she returned to Nigeria to audition for “The Wedding Party.” She credits her return to her children who insistedly encouraged her to return to acting, saying it was her “calling.”

Since then, Sola has delivered powerful performances in leading roles. After “The Wedding Party,” she acted in Kemi Adetiba’sKing of Boys” as the lead character, Oba, and in the sequel. 2023 saw her star in “Anikulapo and its sequel, “Anikulapo: The Rise to Spectre“, alongside other hit films like “Battle On Buka Street” and in the most recent Bollywood/Nollywood movie, “Postcards.”

Sola’s filmography is very impressive. See below a list of some of her prominent films since her return:

You would agree that Nollywood has done quite a good job as a medium for educating Nigerians about the country’s rich history. Taking cues from real-life historical events, filmmakers are entertaining audiences and creating a visual record of the past – to ensure that future generations have a tangible way to connect with the pivotal moments that shaped Nigeria into the nation it is today.

October 1,” “Half of a Yellow Sun,” “76,” and “93 Days” exemplify this. These films expose audiences to the struggles and triumphs of the Nigerian people, through fictional stories around significant historical events. For instance, “93 Days” tells the story of Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, the physician who curbed the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria despite tragically succumbing to the virus.

By bringing these stories to life on screen, Nollywood is preserving history and fostering an understanding of the elements that continue to shape Nigeria’s present and future.

To celebrate Democracy Day, we’ve compiled a list of 5 must-watch historical Nollywood movies that will take you on a cinematic journey through Nigeria’s story. So grab your popcorn and settle in for an educational and entertaining experience.

Half Of A Yellow Sun

Twin sisters, Olanna and Kainene (played by Thandie Newton and Anika Noni Rose), from a wealthy Nigerian family choose different paths in life. Yet, both are drawn into the fight for Biafran independence. Based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s bestseller, the film intertwines the lives of four characters caught in the Nigerian Civil War.

War erupts in late 1960s Nigeria, fracturing families and forcing displacement. Odenigbo (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Olanna face escalating conflict, fleeing their university home and straining their relationship with Kainene. As the war intensifies and Biafra’s situation worsens, Odenigbo, Olanna, and their family fight to survive mounting hardships.

“Half of a Yellow Sun” portrays the human cost of war and celebrates the resilience of the Nigerian people.

October 1

September 1960. Nigeria teeters on the brink of independence from British rule. Dan Waziri (Sadiq Daba), a northern Nigerian detective, is dispatched by the colonial government to Akote, a western trading post to solve a series of female murders that have struck horror in the hearts and minds of the local community.

As Dan Waziri arrives, the body count rises. Tensions soar, and he races to find the culprit before more women are killed. Released in 2014, the film explores the complex socio-political climate leading up to Nigerian independence, highlighting the nation’s struggle for identity, justice, and unity at this pivotal moment.

76

Starring Rita Dominic, Ramsey Nouah and Chidi Mokeme and set in 1976, “76” offers a gripping narrative centred on the aftermath of a military coup in Nigeria. The 2016 film follows the life of Joseph Dewa, a young military officer accused of being involved in a failed coup against the government of General Murtala Mohammed.

With its realistic portrayal of the political unrest and intrigues during the military era, “76” provides a window into a tumultuous period in Nigeria’s history.

93 days

Bimbo Akintola, Danny Glover and Somkele IyamahIdhalama star in director Steve Gukas’ riveting real-life thriller about courageous healthcare workers in Lagos battling the Ebola outbreak in 2014. The film centres on the courageous medical professionals who risked their lives to contain the deadly virus.

“93 Days” pays tribute to the selflessness and dedication of healthcare workers and celebrates Nigeria’s resilience in overcoming a major health crisis.

Oloibiri

When commercial-grade oil was discovered in the small village of Oloibiri, Nigeria, prosperity and employment became their way of life. Two decades after the last drops were drilled and the US oil companies abandoned them, all the village was left with was polluted water, sick children, and an unstable economy. When a new multinational corporation strikes oil again, rage intensifies and Nigerian militants, led by a hardened killer named Gunpowder (Richard Mofe-Damijo), seek revenge on the greedy foreigners by kidnapping Powell, (William R. Moses) the company’s CEO. Families become divided as the village elder, Timpriye (Olu Jacobs) struggles with saving the life of this man who represents all the evils that oil brought to his village so many years ago.

A 2016 Nigerian action thriller, “Oloibiri” exposes the exploitation of newfound oil in Oloibiri by the government and corporations.

Nigerian filmmaker Priye Diri is making history! Selected as one of 20 participants from 12 countries, she’s the first Nigerian to join the prestigious 10th edition of the Global Media Makers LA Residency.

Organised by Film Independent and supported by the U.S. Department of State, this programme connects international filmmakers with the American entertainment industry. Its mission: fostering a global network for independent storytelling, creative economic growth, and artistic freedom.

Priye will spend five intensive weeks developing her narrative feature, “Baby Girl,” alongside fellow residents. The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum: screenwriting, directing, creative development, and documentary filmmaking. Cultural engagement sessions, masterclasses, and industry meetings will further enrich the experience.

“Baby Girl” explores the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship and a woman’s self-discovery journey. Facing fierce competition (over 650 applications!), Priye’s selection is a testament to her exceptional talent and captivating story.

The residency brings together filmmakers from across the globe (Bangladesh, India, Mexico, etc.) This diverse group fosters lasting collaborations with experienced mentors and each other, further strengthening the program’s core mission of building a vibrant international community of independent filmmakers.

Priye is an established talent with writing credits on the Amazon Prime hit “Kill Boro” and directing credits on Showmax’s “Rule No. 1,” Iroko TV’s “Chimera,” and her upcoming short film “Dying Is Hard To Do.”
