With constant incidences of “what I ordered versus what I got”, we thought it necessary to put together a checklist for you to ensure every 21-Year-Old Gran Reserva you pick off the shelf or order for is exactly what you expect. With the constant occurrence of “what I ordered versus what I got,” we thought it necessary to put together a checklist to ensure that every 21-Year-Old Gran Reserva you pick off the shelf or order is exactly what you expect. The 21-Year-Old Gran Reserva was intentionally crafted to deliver the best-rounded flavors every time you pick up our signature bottle. Ready to know what’s on the list? Keep reading.

Tips on How to Differentiate Between an Original and an Imitation of a Glenfiddich 21-year-old

Take a look at some tips to help you ensure you purchase the original Glenfiddich 21-year-old:

  • Check the Security Seal: Glenfiddich has spared no expense in safeguarding this traditional Speyside Whisky. All you have to do is regard the security seal as your first line of defense. The 21-year-old Gran Reserva is adorned with a tamper-evident seal that’s not just there for show. Before you open a bottle of the Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old, make sure this seal is intact. If it’s been tampered with, take a step back—it’s a red flag.
  • The Taste Profile: Now, assuming your bottle has passed the seal check, let’s move on to the good stuff. The Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old which was allowed to patiently mellow at the Glenfiddich distillery in Scotland for 21 years is renowned for its unique taste profile. With a rich blend of the Glenfiddich signature notes — uplifting lime notes, sweet toffee, and a hint of sultry fig — counterfeits usually fail miserably in replicating this complexity, delivering a flat, uninspiring flavor. So, trust your taste buds; it’s a reliable ally in your quest for authenticity.
  • Packaging Perfection: Authentic Glenfiddich packaging is a work of art. Many thanks to the malt master, Brian Kinsman who handpicks the whisky’s barrels and adds a finishing touch instead of merely bottling it in the usual way. The label is meticulously printed, with every detail crisp and clear. If the bottle in your hands has a wonky label, uneven printing, or a less-than-perfect finish, you might be dealing with a phony.
  • The Finishing Touch: Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old undergoes an extra special process—finished in Caribbean rum casks, it has a luxurious, lingering finish that’s unmistakable. This is a flavor note that counterfeits just can’t replicate. That smooth, warm finish with a touch of sweetness is the hallmark of an authentic Glenfiddich 21-year-old.

Still in Doubt, Reach Out

Still unsure? Don’t hesitate to call or send a WhatsApp message to +2349139384706 with your purchase details and proof. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and the Glenfiddich team is always ready to help you ensure you’ve got the real thing.

So, there you have it—your foolproof guide to ensuring that the Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old in your glass is as genuine as the craftsmanship behind it. Cheers to sipping only the finest!

Minz, the singer-songwriter, has unveiled the visualiser for his latest single, “Diallo,” featuring Tekno and 255. The track is off  Minz’s upcoming debut album, “By Any Minz.”

Diallo” revolves around themes of love, infatuation, and emotional struggle. The chorus and recurring phrase, “Diallo,” seems to represent a person or emotional state that causes internal conflict or confusion for the speaker.

Through the lyrics, Minz, Tekno, and 255 express vulnerability and the overwhelming effects of love or a romantic relationship. They mention things like “wasting time,” “taking money,” and “taking my life,” suggesting the emotional and physical toll of this connection. The lines “I’m bad for you, prove them right” also hint at a sense of self-awareness, recognising the toxicity or imbalance in the relationship.

The Junior Tigress, Nigeria’s U18 women’s basketball team, has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Pretoria, South Africa, after a decisive 66-51 victory over Egypt. This marks the first time in 14 years that Nigeria has advanced to the semifinals of this tournament.

Coming into the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams, the Junior D’Tigress wasted no time establishing dominance against previously unbeaten Egypt, leading 24-13 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they extended their lead to 37-24 at halftime.

Although the third quarter presented some challenges with turnovers and foul trouble, their defence stayed strong, and they maintained offensive pressure with fluid ball movement, ending the third with a comfortable 54-36 lead.

Egypt, who had defeated Nigeria 72-60 in the opening game of the tournament, couldn’t replicate their earlier success. Nigeria’s squad sought redemption and found it. Abigail Isaac was a standout player, posting a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Next, Nigeria will face Uganda in the semifinals on Friday at 5:00 p.m. (GMT+2), while Cameroon will take on Mali in the other semifinal matchup.

Watch the highlights from the quarter-final between Egypt and Nigeria below.

South African superstar Tyla won her first MTV Video Music Award (VMA) this year, and her acceptance speech carried a powerful message for the global music industry: African music is rich, diverse, and far more than just Afrobeats.

Held yesterday at the UBS Arena in Queens, New York, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards had Megan Thee Stallion as the host. This year marked another milestone for African music, as Tyla took home the award for Best Afrobeats with her chart-topping hit “Water.” She was in the “Best Afrobeats” category alongside  Burna BoyTemsTylaDavidoAyra StarrLojay, and Pheelz and was also nominated for “Best New Artist,” and “Best RnB.”

After being presented with her award by Lil Nas X and Halle Bailey, Tyla expressed her gratitude to the organisers of the show and described her win as “a big moment for Africa,” adding that the success of “Water” not only made a global impact but also proved that “African music can be pop music too.”

“Like this is just so special but also bittersweet, because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeats,” she said.  “African music is so diverse, it’s more than just Afrobeats.”

Tyla’s win follows the success of Rema, who took home the inaugural Best Afrobeats award last year for his hit song “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez.

Meanwhile, Taylor Swift dominated the night with seven wins, tying for most overall, while Eminem claimed the most solo male artist wins.

Even though Ifunanya’s first date with Kingsley came with a little awkwardness, it turned out to be the beginning of something magical. 😍

They formed an instant connection that led to many more dates and now, happily ever after! Today, they are blessing us with their beautiful pre-wedding photos, and we can’t stop gushing over how cute they look together. From their radiant smiles to the undeniable chemistry they share, these two are the perfect reminder that sometimes, all it takes is one date to find your forever.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Ifunanya:

Kingsley and I met on a hot summer evening at a graduation party of a mutual family friend. We exchanged contacts and started talking. We planned our first date which ended up being the worst dates I have ever being to (I told him to surprise me for our first date and he took me to a restaurant that only served steak, I hate steak lol). During our first date, we clicked and we found out we had the same vision and goals. First date turned to multiple dates now to forever.

When a woman struggles to overcome adversity in life, it has far-reaching effects that impact family, community and society at large. This is why The Live Again Foundation, through its numerous programmes, is giving hope to broken, abused and distressed women so they can start afresh, rediscover purpose and begin to rebuild their lives.

Convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi

One such programme — The Live Again Outreach — was held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at the Combo Hall, Lagos State Television (LTV), Ikeja. The maiden edition of the outreach attracted over 500 women who have lived through traumatic experiences that have held them captive, making them feel hopeless about the future.

From the young and old, single and married, and separated and divorced women, attendees from diverse walks of life travelled from various states across Nigeria.

My experience, my past and the topics prompted me to attend this program; said Wumi Obanla, one of the participants.

When asked about the goal of this soul-lifting gathering of women, the convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi passionately explained; The purpose of the outreach is to empower women to heal from their painful past, reengineer their mind-set, rebuild their self-esteem and confidence and rediscover their true purpose in life. We want to help women live again in all aspects of their lives she added.

The life-changing event was carefully put together with inspiring presentations from notable speakers and professionals. It also had breakout sessions, medical screenings, massage therapy, makeup sessions, gifts, business grants and legal counsel and advice.

Mind-Shifting and Life-Changing sessions

Cross section of the audience

The curtain-raiser was a deeply moving presentation by the Convener of the outreach titled, “How I began to live again: Turning pain to purpose,” where she recounted her emotional journey from despair to rebirth.

She characterised it by saying,

A lot of women are going through abuse, pain or difficult situation and find it hard to live again. Some of them don’t even have anyone to talk to. They’re afraid of being judged, that nobody will believe them. But I believe them because I’ve been through it.

Dr Catherine Onyejiaka

TEDx speaker, author and communication and professional development coach, Dr Catherine Onyejiaka cranked up the energy with an authoritative and thought-provoking talk on “Finding your voice again.” During her session, she pointed out that,

“There’s something deposited in you that needs to be harnessed that is needed by the world. You need to understand that you’re more than what you think you are.”

Dr Catherine Onyejiaka

Then it was the turn of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) — the organization backed up by law to cater to issues of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Lagos state. The representative of the anti-abuse watchdog introduced the agency and its activities to the audience.

She outlined the rights of women and how the agency helps victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, emphasizing the need to speak up rather than remain lip-sealed, silenced, suppressed and oppressed.

Since one of the goals of the outreach is to help women live again in all aspects of their lives including financially, it was proper to have the next two sessions on monetizing your talents, knowledge and skills delivered by Enifome; and making, managing and multiplying money — delivered by Chinedu Akpunonu.

Here’s what Chinedu had to say about the event;

One thing I know this conference will do for a lot of women is give them hope.

Beyond these powerful sessions, there were also breakout sessions on emotional intelligence, parenting, relationships, marriage and business strategy.

Speakers at the Live Again Outreach

All the sessions were carefully designed to help women rediscover their purpose, boost their confidence and take the first steps towards reclaiming their lives. The attendees can begin to overcome self-doubt and embark on a journey of personal growth and transformation.

A sprinkle of fun
To fire up the already ignited event, the organisers of the outreach partnered with several individuals and organisations to create a fun-filled and supportive experience. The attendees enjoyed free spa and massage therapy, hair makeover, photoshoot sessions and gifts.

They also got free career and legal counselling, resume reviews, and medical screenings and medications. Each participant went home with a Live Again pack which included the 12-Step Guide to Living Again — a transformative book to guide women through the rejuvenating process of living again.

Empowerment with business grants
Aside from the freebies, a total of twenty women received business grants of N100,000 each. One mother got free a business name registration as well as N200,000 to support her business.

This empowerment initiative aims to provide recipients with support to launch or grow their businesses and transform adversities into opportunities for success and financial freedom.

Deborah Aderele, one of the recipients of the business grants described in her own words;

Winning this grant was like… wow! This is just a confirmation that, yes… Deborah… go and start that thing you want to do, go and make it better. The world wants to hear your voice.

Another grant recipient, Victoria Adetutu said,

I didn’t see this coming. I’ve been a volunteer teacher for over 2 years teaching children. I wondered when I’m going to reap the rewards of my work. Today, I can see God at work.

The host and moderator of the outreach, Presh Talker also had this to say;

“This event is not just one of those events where you come to and have plenty of talk. It’s an event that brings more life to all women. And I believe every woman who walked in here today will not go out the same. They’ll live again.”

Participants Refresh and Refuel for the Future
The maiden Live Again outreach exceeded all expectations, delivering a profoundly life-changing experience that made a lasting difference in the lives of the participants.

This landmark event was the trigger the attendees needed to rediscover purpose and find a new meaning to life — a reason to Live Again. They left the programme with a new mindset, a renewed belief in themselves knowing that they belong to a supporting community in the Live Again movement.

On her final thoughts on the impact of the outreach, the Convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi said;

What I see here is, a multiplier effect of women helping other women live again. Because when you empower a woman, you empower other women. Helping a woman live again is helping a generation to live again.

Beyond the Outreach
The Live Again Foundation holds post-outreach webinars and business strategy classes for women. It has also scheduled mentorship sessions for grant recipients to help with the judicious use of the funds.

The foundation will continue its work in helping women rise from the ashes and live their dreams. To learn more about the works of the Live Again Foundation, check them out on their active social media accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin.

Most of what I know today about writing and public speaking was self-taught. When I started, I had a flair for expressing but I didn’t have mentors and models that could hone my talents until much later in my personal development journey. I believe in paying it forward; unlike those weird lecturers who enjoy making life for their students owing to the difficulties they face – I opt to make it easier for those coming behind me by doubling down on knowledge-sharing. As a way of putting others on the game, I came up with creative yet instructive pearls about the craft of writing.

Today, I get a lot requests from people asking me to teach them how to write. But my response always stuns them. First, I tell them that they are already doing some sort of writing whether in their academics, at the workplace or even via social media. Second, I tell them that the first thing about writing isn’t writing – it’s thinking. Every great thing that has ever been created is rooted in the quality of thoughts. A famous Japanese car manufacturer in the 90s released an ad which captured the minds of the world; not just for the design of the vehicles but more for the tagline: “Yo shinai, Yo kangai” – which is loosely translated as “Good thinking; good product”.

In the book of Genesis, which is Moses’ account of creation, he starts by saying, “In the beginning, God created.” However, in John’s account of creation which thematically underscores the divinity of Christ, he starts by saying, “In the beginning was the Word”. These two introductions are important because in the etymology of the text, the original term for “Word” is “Logos” which means thought or thinking. What that tells us is that the calibration of creation as we know it wasn’t mere happenstance or some Big Bang theory but a result of intelligent thinking. Before there was any speaking, there was a “brooding over the waters”. Interestingly, the word “brood” doesn’t only mean to think deeply, it also describes how birds hatch their eggs – bringing ideas from the abstract to the concrete. That’s one of the ways you can activate your God mode as a creative or content creator.

Without equivocation, the Creator Economy is in full swing. People are better positioned to earn from content creation than at any other point in modern history. The prospects of monetising content have become both a blessing and a curse; some people have used their content to enhance their thought leadership while others have succumbed to their primal instincts to do anything for clout – including doing or saying dumb things with the hopes of going ‘viral’. However, controversy is not a strategy that works for everyone; what is sauce for Guinea might not be sauce for Uganda.

Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo!

When comedian, Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie, better known as Brain Jotter, used a song by Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, a veteran highlife singer in a skit, little did he know that the song that was recorded over four decades ago would not only bring about a celebration of the living legend but also usher him into notoriety. While the internet is awash with the viral dance from Brain Jotter’s skit, it was not lost on me that the song itself is a masterclass in storytelling. Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche, the song to which the now-popular refrain has assumed a life of its own, speaks about the classic mischievousness of the tortoise, who devised a cunning way to capture the elephant who was wanted by the king over his indiscretions. Using wit, the tortoise lured the elephant to the palace by misleading him into thinking he was being appointed as the chairperson of a famous festival.

Owing to their unique shared experiences and the misrepresentation of history against them, the South-Easterners mostly preserved their culture from one generation to another orally – as such they became storytellers by default. Mike Ejeagha belongs to the prestigious pantheon of Akuko-na-egwu (story-in-music) that includes Chief Dennis Osadebe, Jim Rex Lawson, Onyeka Onwenu, Oliver De Coque and Flavour N’abania. I remember going through my dad’s vinyl records that year, it made me look up Bright Chimezie’s song, African Style and his signature Zigima moves. He shared his hilarious adventures in Oyibo man’s country (Ala bekee) where foreigners called the cops on him while eating ogbono soup because, in his words, they thought, “The black man wey dey here is committing suicide o!”

The narrations in their music made us realise that it is wrong to put out content mindlessly. Tell a compelling story that will make the content stand the test of time, like Mike Ejeagha’s gwo gwo gwo ngwo.

Value or Vibes? Na Collabo!

Originality works for me, why I no go show? No be lie! There are times when I create content to educate and other times it’s to entertain. Most times I do both because I realise I can walk and chew gum simultaneously. I know how to be bourgeoisie and also be ratchet – anyhow e be, I go play my part. As much as I have a niche, I also show my range on a variety of topics as I have done recently: faith, culture, music, movies, geopolitics, and sports entertainment. One mistake most content creators make is to litter their work with buzz words without depth; once people realise that you’re just riding the wave, they will move on. Buzzwords are not a replacement for great content; they should be the icing on the cake and not the cake itself.

Jira! Jira!! Jira!!!

Every content creator should have a signature; whether it’s overt or covert; there must be certain features that stand you out from others. It could be how you talk, how you dress, a certain phrase you use or how you edit your videos. Dan Bello has a signature phrase for his TikTok videos, “Jira! Jira!! Jira!!!” If you watch any of his skits and you don’t hear that phrase, you somewhat become disappointed. A signature could also be niche content like politics, health, food, business and technology. One of my signatures is intelligence, regardless of what the topic is, I do my best to share intelligent submissions on the subject. It doesn’t necessarily mean that I am always right, it just means you can count on me to put an intelligent spin on my thoughts and not to insult the sensibilities of my audience by putting out pedestrian arguments. A brand is a promise to internal and external stakeholders that they will consistently find congruence between the expectation and experience of a product.

RRR

Real recognises real. Although we throw the words around a lot, there is really nothing like a global audience – at best we are creating content for core and peripheral audiences. One of the ways you know a master storyteller is his or her use of language because messaging tells me what demography your content is designed for. Communication requires emotional intelligence; your choice of language, whether formal or colloquial, is a nod to your target market. A register is a peculiar vocabulary that applies to specific communities, once you know how to navigate it. Don’t get me wrong, 99% of my writing that you never get to see (as a ghostwriter) is strictly formal because it borders mostly on corporate communications. However, when creating content for phone-pressing demography, I switch it up. Nobody wants to go on the internet and read a dissertation. So whether I am being serious or jonzing, there is a method to the madness.

The Lifestyle Cost But Some Clients No Know

See what you do from three perspectives: art, business and politics. For example, football is not just a sport (art), it’s more of a business and it’s also being used for image laundering or public relations (politics). After creating content that makes sense, you have to ensure it makes money. Charging clients for your work is very important; you must have a scientific pricing model. Know your competence level and what your skillset commands in the marketplace. Learn to deconstruct the value proposition to clients so that they see paying you as an investment, not a cost. In this country wey billing dey everywhere and inflation no be your mate, you have to be active when selling yourself because these days even one million no dey last again. You can even sign up with a talent management company just like Layi Wasabi is plugged into Penzaarville Africa so you can focus on churning out content while experts take care of business for you.

The 8th annual edition of the Voice of Women Conference & Awards (VOW2024) is set to take place on

Date: Thursday, October 3rd 2024
Venue: NAF Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria.

The conference will host grassroots and urban women in constructive conversations on the crucial roles of grassroots women in achieving inclusive policies that drive sustainable development for women in Nigeria.

This year’s conference theme, “Achieving Women’s Inclusion for a Sustainable Nigeria,” was inspired by feedback from physical engagements with grassroots women across the 6 geopolitical zones.

According to Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, chairperson VOW2024 planning committee, the theme for this year has brought to the fore the missing link between policy and action and the conference looks beyond the present envisioning a future of progress.

Akiyode-Abiola said VOW2024 would prioritise results-driven approaches to foster a future of progress by tapping into innovative ideas and policy interventions. She further stated that the VOW Conference has set the standard for promoting and protecting women’s rights in Nigeria, becoming a marketplace for ideas and policy innovation, with a unique influence on the policy landscape.

The conference will host keynote addresses, panel discussions, fireside chats and networking opportunities for women from diverse backgrounds in business, politics, civil society, and academia, as well as community leaders, activists, and individuals passionate about inclusive policymaking.

Award Nomination
In addition to the conference, the VOW Awards are being announced to recognize not only women but also organizations and individuals making remarkable contributions across various fields.

Nominations are encouraged for outstanding individuals or organizations that have driven progress and positive change in their communities. To submit a nomination, please use the link here. The deadline for nominations is September 12th.

VOW has established itself as a leading platform for amplifying women’s voices in business, leadership, and social impact. The Voice of Women Conference & Awards (VOW) is an annual conference of diverse women groups in business, politics, civil society and academia who converge to discuss and proffer solutions on critical national development issues organised by Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation in partnership with Women Radio 91.7FM.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in Northeastern Nigeria, over 239,000 people have been severely impacted by flash floods after the Alau Dam in Konduga LGA burst its banks overnight following heavy rains. The torrential downpour across the region has also caused significant flooding in other areas, including Biu, Chibok, Bama, Dikwa, and Jere LGAs.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), about 70% of Maiduguri has been submerged by the fast-moving waters. Major city locations such as the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the state secretariat, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and several residential areas like Bulabulin, Gwange, and Lagos Area have been heavily affected.

“About 70 per cent of the town is already underwater. So, many people are trapped as the flood intensified when people were sleeping; some people woke up to discover that they were inside water,” NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, told The PUNCH Newspaper.

This flood has been described as the most devastating in Borno’s history, with many residents comparing it to the last major flood in 1994, but emphasising that this is far worse. Thousands of people have been displaced, forced to seek refuge in schools after losing their homes. The floods have claimed 80% of the animals in the city’s zoo and submerged key city landmarks.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over the disaster and instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit the affected areas. In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu called for the immediate evacuation of residents and ordered rescue operations to be expedited.

Many of the displaced residents have moved to the Muna IDP camp, already home to more than 50,000 internally displaced persons. Government authorities have reopened former IDP camps, including the Bakasi and Dalori camps, to accommodate evacuees. However, these temporary shelters are already at full capacity. El Miskin camp, which hosts over 7,000 IDPs—half of whom are children—has also been flooded, adding to the humanitarian crisis.

Across Nigeria, floods have claimed more than 200 lives this year and affected over 800,000 people across 29 states, according to data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). As of 9 September, has the highest number of displaced individuals. Other heavily affected states include Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Jigawa, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Tens of thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed ahead of the harvest season, exacerbating food security concerns amid record spikes in food and fuel prices.

What the Displaced Residents Need

The displaced residents of Maiduguri are in urgent need of necessities, including food, clean water, shelter, and medical care. Protection is a significant concern, especially for unaccompanied children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Immediate assistance is required to prevent disease outbreaks, particularly cholera, in overcrowded shelters.

Intermediate needs include non-food items such as blankets, clothing, hygiene supplies, and cooking equipment.

How You Can Help

  • Donate: Support local and international organisations working in the affected regions by donating money, food, and medical supplies.
  • Spread Awareness: Use your platform to raise awareness about the floods and the urgent needs of the displaced people. Social media, blogs, and community outreach can help gather support.
  • Volunteer: If you are in the region or able to travel, volunteering with relief agencies can make a direct impact.
  • Advocate for Long-term Solutions: Encourage governments and organisations to implement flood control measures, improve drainage systems, and invest in long-term infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
  • Partner with NGOs: Work with non-governmental organisations to coordinate the delivery of essential services and items to affected areas.

The 2024 Annual Women Directors Conference, organised by the Women Directors Development Committee (WDDC) of the Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria, was a resounding success!

Held at the prestigious Ecobank Pan African Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos, on the 5th of September, the one-day event was filled with glitz and glamour, bringing together highly accomplished women from diverse sectors to discuss pressing leadership challenges in today’s disruptive business landscape.

The conference had in attendance Awele V. Elumelu, OFR, Chairperson, Avon Healthcare Limited, Co-Founder, The Tony Elumelu Foundation, as Keynote Speaker, and Bolaji Lawal, Managing Director, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, as Guest of Honour, as well as tons of well-accomplished professionals as speakers and panellists at the conference.

Themed “Leading in a Disruptive Age: Opportunities in Emerging Technologies, DEI & ESG,” the conference featured three panel sessions with exceptional speakers and panellists. Discussions centred around the critical role of women directors in corporate governance, especially as organisations navigate rapid technological advancements and shifting social and environmental expectations.

Tijjani M. Borodo, President of CIoD Nigeria, called on women directors to lead the charge in steering their organisations through the era of emerging technologies like AI, blockchain, and IoT, while championing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices. Panellists also delved into the transformative power of AI in governance, risk, and compliance (GRC), highlighting the importance of AI governance and ethics in shaping the future of boardroom leadership.

The conference, chaired by Otunba Debola Osibogun, F.CIoD, WDDC Chairman, created a platform for in-depth discussions, innovative ideas, and strategies for driving sustainable, responsible, and tech-driven leadership. Participants left empowered and better equipped to harness emerging opportunities and shape the future of governance in Nigeria and beyond.

Organisers of the 2024 Annual Women Directors Conference would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all speakers, panellists, guests, participants, sponsors, and partners for making this event a triumph and for their support and commitment to advancing leadership excellence.

Growing up as a child in the 90s, we spoke our native language fluently. It was the official language of communication in our home, neighbourhood, church and market. There was no special effort towards inculcating the Igbo into our everyday life; it was simply a part of it. Interestingly, being grounded in our local language helped us learn and express ourselves in English better. It helped build our confidence in who we were and also indirectly taught us about other ethnic groups in Nigeria because they had a different language from ours.

As we celebrate International Literacy Day 2024 with the theme, “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace,” I find myself reflecting on the situation in Nigeria. Nigeria is a vibrant and culturally diverse nation, boasting over 250 ethnic groups and about 525 native languages. Yet, despite this rich linguistic and cultural heritage, our native dialects are rarely used to educate the younger generation, which is a notable contrast from our childhood days. This disconnection from our indigenous languages is alarming because it threatens the gradual eradication of local languages and cultures in future generations.

Growing up, I was taught in English, just like the majority of Nigerian children today. English is the official language of instruction in schools, businesses, and government, and in recent years, there has also been a surge in interest in foreign languages such as French and Mandarin. Our children, it seems, are becoming increasingly globalised, often more fluent in these foreign tongues than in their native dialects. While fluency in multiple languages is undoubtedly beneficial, there is an undeniable cost when it comes at the expense of one’s mother tongue.

The languages of our ancestors are not only modes of communication but also repositories of our collective history, traditions, and worldview. Every Nigerian dialect carries with it centuries of wisdom, cultural values and core identity. By failing to promote multilingual education that includes indigenous languages, we risk losing an essential part of ourselves. This loss not only affects our identity but also weakens the very fabric that binds us together as ethnic groups and as a nation.

We need to recognise the importance of promoting literacy in our local languages alongside the global languages that open opportunities for Nigerians in the international community. Multilingual education fosters mutual understanding, respect for diversity and, ultimately, peace. In a country like Nigeria, where ethnic and religious tensions have been a persistent challenge, promoting mutual understanding through language could be a crucial step toward national unity.

Imagine if every Nigerian child could fluently speak their native language alongside English and other international languages. They would not only be multilingual but also deeply connected to their roots. Such a child would grow up with a sense of pride in their cultural identity while also being equipped with the skills needed to thrive in the global economy. Moreover, the ability to communicate across different Nigerian languages would foster greater empathy and understanding between the diverse ethnic groups in our country.

There is also a cognitive benefit to multilingual education. Research has shown that children who grow up learning multiple languages develop better problem-solving skills, enhanced creativity, and improved cognitive flexibility. Multilingualism broadens their minds and helps them see the world from different perspectives — something that is desperately needed in a country as diverse as ours.

But how can we ensure that future generations of Nigerians do not lose touch with their linguistic heritage?

One approach is to integrate local languages into our formal education system. Currently, most schools, especially in urban areas, focus primarily on English, with little to no instruction at all in local dialects. By introducing indigenous languages as part of the school curriculum, especially in the early years of education and giving it adequate attention, we can help children become fluent in both their mother tongue and other languages. Teachers could be trained to teach these languages, and learning materials could be developed to support them.

Beyond the classroom, parents and communities also play a critical role. In many Nigerian homes, English has become the dominant language spoken, even in families where both parents speak a local dialect. As parents, we need to be intentional about speaking our native language to our children, encouraging them to use it in daily conversation and take pride in their linguistic heritage.

As we celebrate International Literacy Day, I urge Nigerians to reflect on the significance of our indigenous languages and the role they play in fostering understanding and peace. Let’s not allow globalisation and the dominance of English and other international languages to overshadow the languages that make Nigeria unique. By promoting multilingual education that includes our native dialects, we can preserve our cultural heritage, promote national unity, and equip future generations with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Literacy, after all, is not just about the ability to read and write; it is about understanding, communication, and connection. It is about preserving the stories of our past while building bridges to a brighter, more inclusive future.

Tsitse and Tofa met in church and a nudge from two mutual friends transformed them from friendly strangers into something much more.

As they embark on their beautiful journey, we are yet reminded that all it takes is a little push from fate—and a couple of friends—for true love to find its way. They are serving premium alté vibes with their pre-wedding shoot and each frame is an artistic display of their beautiful love. No doubt, these two were meant to be and their pre-wedding photos are proof.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the couple, Tsitse & Tofa:

Our story kicked off in 2015 when we were both university students, living it up in the vibrant city of Brighton. Our paths first crossed in the cozy, welcoming vibe of our shared church community. Back then, we were more like friendly strangers, exchanging polite nods and small talk. For the first two years, we stayed in our own worlds, practically acquaintances, despite orbiting the same circles.

But fate, with its cheeky sense of timing, had other plans. Thanks to a little nudge from two mutual friends, we started spending more time together. What began as casual chats slowly turned into something more electric. By 2018, our friendship had sparked into a close, unbreakable bond. The shift from casual friends to something deeper felt so natural, it was almost like they were always meant to find each other.

As our connection grew, our story flowed naturally toward a magical moment in January 2024. In a setting filled with love and anticipation, Tofarati took a deep breath, got down on one knee, and popped the question that would change everything. That single, heart-stopping moment was the culmination of years of laughter, shared secrets, and a deepening love—a love that promises a lifetime of adventure and excitement.

One of Nigeria’s beauty products, Fair & White Nigeria, has launched a new skincare product, So White with Vitamin C, into the Nigerian market.

The product was unveiled on Friday in Lagos and a new brand ambassador was announced, Nengi Rebecca Hampson of Big Brother Naija. The event which was held at StrongTowers, Ikoyi, Lagos was graced by celebrities, beauty enthusiasts, distributors, marketers, brand experts, and other stakeholders.

Speaking shortly after her unveiling, Nengi expressed excitement about joining the brand. Describing her role as a brand ambassador as

an incredible opportunity to identify with a worthy brand.

Nengi, a former Miss Bayelsa State and a housemate in BBNaija season five pledged to represent the brand well, promoting the benefits of the new product for healthy, radiant skin.

In his welcome address, Chairman/CEO of Fair & White Nigeria, Patrick Chibueze, reiterated the company’s dedication to quality. Represented by a director, Kene Chibueze, Patrick said,

Fair & White is committed to providing quality skin care products that enhance and celebrate the natural beauty of African women. Our latest brand, So White, enriched with Vitamin C and sunscreen filters, provides the essential ingredients to maintain a glowing complexion all day.

So White was designed to enhance the skin’s radiance while offering protection from sun damage. The Vitamin C content in the product acts as an antioxidant, helping to even out the complexion and combat early signs of ageing.

As we unveil our new product, we reaffirm our commitment to innovation and excellence, promoting beauty that is deeply connected to well-being.

Explaining the choice of Nengi as the brand ambassador, Chibueze stated

Fair & White Nigeria firmly believes in celebrating the natural beauty of African women. It is for this reason that we consistently select beautiful African models as ambassadors for our brands.

Nengi embodies everything our brand stands for—authenticity, elegance, and a commitment to healthy living. We believe her values will resonate with our consumers.

He also expressed gratitude to the company’s distributors, marketers, and consumers for their continued loyalty to the brand despite challenging economic conditions.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were former BBNaija housemate Cynthia Nwadiora (Cee Cee), who is also a Fair & White brand ambassador. Akpororo entertained guests with his signature humour, and other notable attendees included Fair & White Nigeria’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Sunday Adekoya, and several prominent figures from the beauty and business industries.

South African breakout star and Grammy award-winning sensation, Tyla, graces the cover of ELLE Magazine’s October 2024 issue. At just 22, Tyla has experienced one of the most meteoric rises in recent music history, captivating audiences around the world. Only a few years ago, she was a high school student in Johannesburg with dreams of stardom. Today, she has made history as the first South African solo artist to land on the Billboard Hot 100 since the iconic Hugh Masekela did so 55 years ago. In addition, Tyla became the inaugural winner of the Grammy’s new category, Best African Music Performance, for her hit single “Water.”

Reflecting on her whirlwind year, Tyla hints at what’s to come: “This year was me introducing myself. Next year, I’m just gonna have fun. Do whatever, wear whatever. I’m just playing around a lot, and bringing a lot of my roots into my music. It’s still gonna be me, still sweaty vibes, but evolved.”

In her interview, Tyla opens up about her upcoming project, the global rise of African pop, and her commitment to keeping her culture alive through her music. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Tyla is determined to maintain her authenticity while celebrating her African heritage in everything she creates.

Read excerpts of the interview below:

On Amapiano:

“When amapiano would come on, we would see everybody’s moves just change. Seeing the energy of it…it felt so spiritual,” she tells me. “I always wanted to mix it with other styles that I enjoy, like R&B and pop—and make it my own.” It was frustrating to watch her country’s unique music, from amapiano to kwaito house, go unnoticed by the rest of the world. “I felt it was so special, and it needed to be shared. I did my own version of it in hopes of getting people to go deeper and discover the other artists we have and the origins of my sound.”

On South African music:

“Another thing about South African music: There can be a depressing song, but the beat just makes you wanna dance. So I also like incorporating that in my stuff. While you’re crying, dance and shake your ass at the same time,” she says with a laugh. Whenever she listens to the amapiano song “Healer Ntliziyo Yam,” for instance, she cries. “I know what I like,” Tyla says. “I know what I wanna look like. I know what is cool, especially now. I trust my judgment, and yeah, I love collaborating with people and going outside of my comfort zone, but not too far off where it feels like something I wouldn’t do. If I don’t like it, I’m not going to do it.”

Reflecting on her wild year,

“I do feel like I’ve changed a lot in the span of a few months; people may not see it. I’m excited to see that in my next album.” She describes that change as starting to detach from what people say or think about her, after feeling annoyed at constant comparisons to Rihanna and “I’m a Slave 4 U”-era Britney Spears. “Initially I used to care. Recently I’ve just been feeling, ‘They’re gonna say what they wanna say, and it doesn’t even matter because I know it’s not that,’” Tyla says. She posts less and sometimes deletes social media apps from her phone for a week at a time.

“This year was me introducing myself. Next year I’m just gonna have fun,” she says. “Do whatever, wear whatever. I’m just playing around a lot, and bringing a lot of my roots into my music. It’s still gonna be me, still sweaty vibes, but evolved.”

Eight studio albums, five live albums, three compilation albums, five EPs, one soundtrack album, two karaoke albums, 32 Grammy awards and 88 nominations, numerous rand deals, and a new haircare line Cécred, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has conquered nearly every aspect of the entertainment industry.

As the 37th greatest artist of all time, with over 200 million records sold worldwide, Beyoncé has maintained her status as a global superstar for over three decades and has “shown an unprecedented adeptness at breaking rules and entering new spaces in the music and business worlds.”

In an interview for GQ Magazine’s October cover story, Beyoncé shares her thoughts on her latest business ventures, her extraordinary legacy, and her role as a mother. “It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being revolutionary,” she reflects. The interview explores her journey of finding “personal joy” after decades in the limelight, balancing motherhood with international stardom, and prioritising self-care.

Read excerpts of the interview below:

What has your experience been like, as a Black woman, in business spaces that some might have assumed you wouldn’t thrive in?

There’s a huge contrast between the business journeys of men and women. Men often have the luxury of being perceived as the strategists, the brains behind their ventures. They’re given the space to focus on the product, the team, the business plan. Women, on the other hand, especially those in the limelight, are frequently pigeonholed into being the face of the brand or the marketing tool. It’s important to me to continue to take the same approach I have taken with my music and apply my learnings to my businesses.

I am here to change that old narrative. I’m here to focus on the quality. We took our time, and we did our research, and we have earned respect for our brand. I try to choose integrity over shortcuts. I’ve learned that true success isn’t about leaning on a name; it’s about crafting something genuine, something that can hold its own. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being revolutionary.

Earlier this year, you also launched a hair care line, Cécred. In ramping up these business interests, do you find that entrepreneurialism scratches a different kind of itch than your other creative pursuits?

I am a musician first. It has always been my priority. I didn’t get into anything that could take away from my artistry until I felt I was solidified as a master at my first love, music.

When I started my hair care brand, Cécred, I wanted it to be recognized for what it does for real people and their hair. When it launched, I made a conscious decision not to appear in the ads. The brand’s first impression needed to stand on its own merit, not be swayed by my influence. I’ve been using these products for years, so I know firsthand how magical they are.

Increasingly, your work seems a little bit like a family business. For instance, recently your 12-year-old daughter, Blue, has evolved from a curious onlooker of your creative process to fully being a part of it, with her own dance routine in your last tour beside you. Were you ever hesitant to include her in your public life and work, with all the scrutiny and, sometimes, criticism that that entails? How has it felt to watch her blossom as a creative force in her own right?

I build my work schedule around my family. I try to only tour when my kids are out of school. I always dreamt of a life where I could see the world with my family and expose them to different languages, architecture, and lifestyles

Raising three kids isn’t easy. The older they get, the more they become their own individuals with unique needs, hobbies, and social lives. My twins are God-sent. Parenting constantly teaches you about yourself. It takes a lot of prayer and patience. I love it. It’s grounding and fulfilling.

My kids come with me everywhere I go. They come to my office after school, and they are in the studio with me. They are in dance rehearsals. It’s natural that they would learn my choreography.

Blue is an artist. She has great taste in music and fashion. She is a fantastic editor, painter, and actress. She has been creating characters since she was three. She’s a natural, but I did not want Blue onstage. Blue wanted it for herself. She took it seriously and she earned it. And most importantly, she had fun! We all watched her grow more and more every night before our eyes.

Following the release of his “Greatness III” album, DJ Neptune has dropped the visuals for “Honest,” featuring Qing Madi.

“Honest” explores the emotional complexities of relationships, highlighting the importance of setting boundaries and seeking space. The song’s narrator expresses a need to be honest about the strain in the relationship, feeling overwhelmed and in need of distance to reflect.

The lyrics capture a sense of frustration with ongoing challenges while acknowledging that the other person may be able to cope without constant communication. There’s a recurring theme of “rewinding” and pulling back, signalling the narrator’s inner conflict of feeling trapped or drained and seeking balance.

At its core, “Honest” explores the tension between love and self-preservation, and the emotional toll of giving without feeling equally fulfilled.

Kanyin and Zak crossed paths for the first time at a friend’s birthday party… or so she thought. Unknown to her, he had actually been in her Twitter DMs three years earlier!

They bonded instantly at the party, and after that, it was clear that Cupid had something magical in store for them. Zak planned an intimate proposal, where he asked Kanyin to marry him, and she joyfully said ‘yes.’ As they gear up for their special day, we can’t help but swoon over their sweet love story. Their pre-wedding photos radiate pure joy and chemistry, capturing the essence of a love that was truly meant to be.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Kanyin:

We met at a friend’s birthday party. It was a house party, and he came with some mutual friends. He stood beside my friends and me, and I couldn’t stop admiring how handsome he looked. He was wearing sneakers, a shirt, and trousers. Honestly, I’m not one to admire guys in sneakers, but trust me, he looked really good, and I couldn’t stop admiring him. I was seriously admiring him that night and I couldn’t stop staring at intervals. He looked so peaceful and calm… I was hoping he was feeling the girl. Luckily for me, he was feeling the fine girl and he actually knew me. He had sent me a DM on Twitter about three years before we met at the party. He reminded me later of how we had once spoken on the phone.

Here’s how Zak popped the question:

We were having a conversation on a random day after work, and I was talking about how I needed to relax and wanted to go to a hotel for the weekend (I say this every market day ). He would always say no, but at some point in the conversation that day, he started indulging me and said we should go. He later suggested adding a dinner too, where I would dress up, he would get me a dress, pay for a makeup artist, and arrange for a nail tech to fix my nails. I don’t know, but the moment he said those things, I knew it was going to be a proposal. But of course, I kept quiet because I didn’t want to ruin the surprise. The only thing I was not sure of was where it was going to be, but I knew I was going to get proposed to that weekend. I really looked forward to it because I was excited to see what he had planned. I’m a proposal girlie, and it’s one thing I had always looked forward to in my life. I’m glad he listened and tried all he could to surprise me and make me happy.

James Earl Jones, the iconic American actor whose unmistakable voice brought to life characters like Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” has passed away at the age of 93. The news of his death at his home in Dutchess County, New York, was confirmed on Monday morning, September 9.

Born on January 17, 1931, James was a shy child who struggled with a speech impediment. In high school, an English teacher helped him overcome his stutter by teaching him how to sound out words carefully and encouraging him to read aloud in class. After high school, he initially attended the University of Michigan to study medicine, but soon found his true passion in drama and changed his major. After completing his service as an Army Ranger, he moved to New York to pursue an acting career.

James’ deep baritone voice and commanding stage presence quickly made him a standout. He made his Broadway debut in the late 1950s in “Sunrise at Campobello.” Over the years, his resonant voice became iconic, breathing life into beloved animated characters such as Mufasa in Disney’s “The Lion King” (1994), its sequel in 1998, and the 2019 remake. He also voiced characters in films like “Robots” (2005) and “Jack and the Beanstalk” (2009). His final role was in 2021’s “Coming 2 America,’ where he reprised his role as King Jaffe Joffer from the 1988 comedy classic “Coming to America.”

In addition to his film roles, James lent his voice to various documentaries, including “Malcolm X” (1972) and “Earth” (2007). He also famously voiced the tagline, “This is CNN,” which still plays during commercial breaks on the network.

He achieved the rare EGOT honour, with an asterisk. He won two Emmy Awards, a Grammy, and two Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2017. In 2011, he received an honorary Oscar.

James Earl Jones was first married to actress-singer Julienne Marie, and his second wife, actress Cecilia Hart, passed away in 2016 after 34 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Flynn Earl Jones.

There’s so much that can be achieved in 24 hours, even though it often feels like 24 hours isn’t enough to accomplish to achieve our goals and highest aspirations. While some people underachieve in 24 hours, others achieve great results by maximising every hour. Many key factors, if balanced and properly implemented, can help anyone achieve great results in 24 hours.

Start the Day Inspired

How you start the day is crucial. For religious individuals, it might involve prayer or communication with God. Regardless of your religious beliefs, it’s important to start the day with a practice that leaves you feeling inspired and ready to embrace whatever the day brings—both the good and the challenging. Each day brings different experiences, and starting with inspiration prepares you mentally to face and succeed. If your day starts well, being inspired helps maintain momentum without becoming complacent. If unexpected challenges arise, staying inspired keeps you resilient when others might become pessimistic. Always begin your day with inspiration because it shapes how the day unfolds.

Get into Action Immediately

It’s easy to get sidetracked by social media, chats, or even family interactions. As enjoyable as these distractions are, they can delay you, causing time to slip by and some goals to become unachievable for the day. There are certain emails you can’t send at certain times, calls you can’t make, and meetings you can’t attend. Timing is everything. It’s important to act immediately. This might mean getting ready quickly or diving straight into work upon arriving at the office—whatever this means for you. It’s crucial to move into action immediately after finding inspiration.

Time Every Activity

If you need to pray, meditate, or engage in any practice to find inspiration, there should be a set duration and a consistent time each day. Whether it’s 10 minutes or 2 hours, it should be timed. Your work hours, too, must be scheduled, as well as your breaks. While many workplaces have defined work hours, self-imposed timing fosters discipline and ensures you accomplish everything within your work period. Focus on producing excellent results during work hours. It’s also important to allocate time for family and rest. Once you establish a specific sleep schedule, adhere to it strictly. Unless it’s crucial, do not alter your family time or sleep routine. How early you sleep impacts how refreshed you feel the next day. Also, set aside time for leisure, even if it’s just 30 minutes. Leisure could include browsing the internet or engaging in any other enjoyable and lawful activity.

Overcome Recurrent Challenges

Identifying and overcoming recurring challenges is essential. For instance, if there’s a goal that consistently unsettles you, you must tackle it so your days become smoother and more productive. The aim each day should be to conquer these persistent obstacles so they no longer hinder you. To solve a problem that others have addressed, research the issue and how it was resolved. Whether the challenge is traffic, navigating rain, or dealing with a difficult boss, there’s a solution for every problem. Be courageous in taking steps toward these solutions, even if they seem unconventional. It might be wiser to move to a smaller apartment closer to work than to risk being late every day and potentially losing your job. It could be more beneficial to leave a job with costly commuting expenses and seek a lower-paying remote position. Resolving ongoing challenges frees you to focus on the core tasks of the day and accomplish them.

Be Realistic

Being realistic is important. You know yourself and your routine. You understand your strengths and weaknesses. Set alarms when needed, keep your commitments, and establish consequences. Find an accountability partner and create a practical schedule. For instance, if you perform better early in the morning, arriving at work early will help you achieve more. To make this happen, your inspirational practices might need to occur even earlier. It may also require leaving home earlier if you commute. Don’t allocate 2 hours for family time when you only have 30 minutes. If 30 minutes is all you have, maximise it and make up for it on the weekends. Keep the end goal in mind. The purpose of all this is to help you achieve your life goals, which is what you and everyone who cares about you want for you. The more you succeed daily, the closer you get to realising your life goals and destiny. Meanwhile, in all this, ensure your sleep schedule remains unaffected.

The Billboard Honour Roll acknowledges artists who have made a significant impact with their chart-topping success over the past year.

The recognition comes as part of Billboard’s celebration of its R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players, spotlighting those who’ve propelled the genre to new heights. Is a 16-Year-Old in the University a Problem for Nigeria? https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/09/is-a-16-year-old-in-the-university-a-problem-for-nigeria/ Mon, 09 Sep 2024 10:30:49 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1670374 Nigeria has so many problems, a 16-year-old in the university is not one of those problems.

In an interview with Channels, Nigeria’s minister for education, Professor Tahir Mamman declared that “underage” students will not be allowed to sit for the examinations held by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) which would deny the students to seek university admission at an early age. According to his analysis, the prerequisite age to write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) is 18, therefore secondary school students are expected to graduate at the age of 17 and a half. While the minister’s breakdown analysis appears straightforward, it is rather flawed.

The minister’s stance raises significant concerns about the priorities of Nigeria’s education system. While the intent might be to ensure maturity before entering university, the reality is that many students in Nigeria complete secondary school before they turn 15. Which is not even a problem; it’s a result of the educational and cultural dynamics in the country. For instance, it’s common for parents to enrol their children in school at an early age, particularly if they show early academic promise. By enforcing an age limit on examinations like WAEC and NECO, the government is delimiting students for their academic capabilities. It contradicts the principles of merit and hard work that should underpin the education system. Instead of celebrating and nurturing young talents, the system seems more intent on stifling them.

While the minister is focused on regulating the age of university admission, there are far more pressing concerns in the education sector that demand attention. Schools across the country are struggling with inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and underpaid teachers. These are the issues that should be at the forefront of educational reform, not whether a 16-year-old is mature enough to enter university.

But that’s not the issue. My issue is what appears to be more flawed in the minister’s analysis which is the context he used the term “underage”. A dictionary meaning will not describe underage as the inability to pursue education. It would rather describe it as a person “too young to engage legally” in some activities. Education is not age-bound; you can begin learning as early as a toddler to as old as your last breath.

My concern is how the minister’s analysis fails to address the broader societal context in Nigeria, where early marriage is still prevalent in many parts of the country, and there’s no law criminalising it. According to UNICEF, Nigeria ranks high among the countries with prevalent child marriages. Just earlier this year, a mass wedding was planned for about 100 underage girls. Meanwhile, the minister or any government personnel did not come out to describe the girls as “underage”. Suppose the government is genuinely concerned about the well-being and future of its youth, it should start by applying the same level of scrutiny to practices like child marriage as it does to the age of university admission.

Moreover, the global context shows that age should not be a barrier to academic or professional achievement. Take, for example, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who became the youngest player to win the Euros Cup. If Yamal were Nigerian, the minister’s policy would suggest that he is too young even to begin university. Yet, in Spain, his youth is celebrated, not curtailed. This highlights a difference in approach: while other countries nurture and promote young talent, Nigeria’s policies seem to hold them back. It is not unprecedented, which is why the majority of Nigeria’s young brightest leave the country for environments in the global world to nurture their dreams.

Nigeria has a broader issue of misplaced priorities. While the government is focused on regulating the age of university admission, there are pressing concerns in the education sector that demand attention. Schools across the country are struggling with inadequate infrastructure and there are millions of out-of-school children on the streets who need basic education to secure their future. The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is designed to test the knowledge and preparedness of students for higher education. If a student can pass this exam, it should be a clear indication that they are ready to advance, regardless of their age. Denying young students the opportunity to pursue higher education because of their age is not only unfair but also counterproductive. Nigeria has so many problems, a 16-year-old in the university is not one of those problems.

The 2024 Summer Olympics may have left many Nigerians disheartened after finishing without a single medal, but the Nigerian Paralympians in Paris had a different message: “Watch us!” Their outstanding performance at the Summer Paralympics showcased resilience, determination, and remarkable achievements, putting Nigeria back on the global map.

Despite a smaller contingent, the Nigerian Paralympians excelled in various fields. Eniola Mariam Bolaji, an 18-year-old badminton player, made history by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna in straight sets (21-9, 21-9) to claim a bronze medal. Not only was this Nigeria’s first medal in Paris, but it was also the first-ever badminton medal won by an African player at either the Olympics or Paralympics.

In the women’s javelin event, Flora Ugwunwa continued her winning streak, securing a silver medal with a throw of 19.26m. The 40-year-old Paralympian has now won medals in three consecutive Paralympics, adding this silver to her two previous golds from Rio and Tokyo.

Ogun-born para-athlete Isau Ogunkunle also made Nigeria proud by winning a bronze medal in the men’s class 4 table tennis competition, continuing the country’s tradition of excellence in the sport.

Nigerian powerlifters once again demonstrated their dominance at the Paralympics. Onyinyechi Mark brought home Nigeria’s first gold medal in Paris, setting new records by lifting 146kg, 147kg, and 150kg in her category. Esther Ogechi Nworgu also added to Nigeria’s medal count, securing silver in the women’s up to 41kg powerlifting event.

Bose Omolayo, a veteran of the Paralympic stage, secured her third consecutive podium finish, claiming silver with a 149kg lift. Despite numerous challenges both on and off the field, she stood tall, finishing ahead of Egypt’s Safaa Hassan and behind China’s Han Miayou, who set a new world record with a 154kg lift to take gold.

Closing Nigeria’s memorable Paralympic journey, team captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered a spectacular performance, winning a gold medal in powerlifting and breaking two world records with a staggering 167kg lift. Her victory was a fitting end to Nigeria’s campaign and a crowning achievement for the team’s efforts.

Overall, Nigeria earned seven medals—two gold, three silver, and two bronze—finishing 40th on the Paralympics medal table and 4th in Africa, behind Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco.

Thanks to a thoughtful friend who played matchmaker, Banke and Norman found their way to each other, and the rest is a beautiful love story.

As they journey into a lifetime of bliss, they had a Yoruba traditional wedding where Norman and his family formally asked for Banke’s hand in marriage. Their wedding was a heartwarming mix of love, culture, and exquisite style. Surrounded by their loved ones, the lovebirds celebrated not just their union, but also the beautiful merging of their families and traditions. It was a day filled with laughter and beautiful moments – You certainly want to take it all in as you scroll.  😍

Enjoy their wedding photos and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Banke:

Norman and I first met in my sophomore year of university. His best friend and roommate (Ridwan) at the time invited me to volunteer at a homeless shelter and introduced me to Norman. We didn’t say much to each other, but he followed me on Instagram right after we were done volunteering. I never saw him again until my senior year of university. I was about to graduate, and I only had a few credits left so I decided to take a swimming class as an elective.

It turned out that Norman’s best friend Ridwan was taking the same class! After swimming class one day, he asked if he and Norman could visit me and my roommate in our apartment downtown and I said of course. When he came over, he was a bit shy but seemed nice. The next day he came over to the bank where I was working part-time to open an account (he didn’t need one, he already had one) and texted me right after he left. We’ve been together ever since!

Questions

Can you tell us about your journey as a poet and what inspired you to start writing poetry?

My journey as a poet began with a love for words and emotions. Poetry became my way of expressing thoughts and feelings about life. I found inspiration in personal experiences and the world around me. Over time, I explored different styles and themes, deepening my passion for poetry. Today, it remains my most cherished form of expression, guiding me on a journey of self-discovery.

What themes or topics do you often explore in your poetry, and why are they significant to you?

Themes like identity, love, loss, nature, and the human experience. These subjects resonate deeply with me as they reflect my journey through life and the experiences I’ve encountered along the way. Exploring identity allows me to navigate my multicultural background and personal growth, while love fascinates me with its complexities. Nature serves as both inspiration and solace, connecting me to something larger than myself. Writing about the human experience allows me to reflect on our shared humanity, emotions, and relationships. I try to capture the beauty, complexity, and depth of these themes so that readers can reflect on their own lives and emotions.

What inspired the book “A Heart of Glass”? Discuss the significance of the title of the book and how it encapsulates the essence of your poetry.

The inspiration behind “A Heart of Glass” comes from a deeply personal journey of self-exploration. It’s all about the intricacies of the human heart. The title itself holds deep meaning: A heart symbolizes vulnerability and intimacy. Glass represents fragility but strength because glass can be very durable. In my poetry, I explore themes of love, loss, and hope, showing the human heart’s fragility and strength. The title also symbolizes the transparency and authenticity that I strive to embody in my writing. Just as glass allows light to pass through, my poetry seeks to illuminate the complexities of the human experience with honesty and sincerity.

How do you navigate the balance between personal expression and connecting with your readers through your poetry?

Navigating the balance between personal expression and connecting with readers is a delicate dance. I draw from my own experiences and observations to fuel my poetry. That way I remain authentic to myself.  At the same time, I strive to write in a way that resonates with readers, tapping into universal themes and emotions that they can relate to. It’s about finding common ground while staying true to my unique voice and perspective. That way I can create poetry that is both deeply personal and universally meaningful. That way, I can relate to readers on a heart-to-heart level.

What do you hope readers take away after reading your poems?

I hope readers are inspired to see the world from a fresh perspective or to question their assumptions about life, society, or themselves. It’s all about stimulating curiosity, exploring new ideas or contemplating familiar topics in a different light.

I hope my poetry sparks creativity and imagination. I think there’s so much beauty in unexpected places. Ultimately, I want readers to walk away feeling enriched, enlightened, and perhaps even inspired to start their own creative journey.

Can you share a few lines from one of your favourite poems you’ve written and explain the inspiration behind it?

This poem is titled, Distant Love

I kept a place for you

Within the depths of my heart

Out of reach and out of sight

So the thought of you will never come to my mind

So I’ll never think I want you in my life

Again.

I cannot let you go

So I’ll keep you in my heart

That’s where you’ll stay

The poem “Distant Love” is a bittersweet sentiment of holding onto someone emotionally, yet keeping them at a distance physically. You’ve probably heard someone say “Just lock up”.

The speaker tries not to think about this person to avoid missing them. They can’t let go completely. It’s a struggle between the desire to let go and the inability to do so, so they decide to keep them in their heart where they’ll always stay.

It’s obviously about love and loss. But really, it’s about the internal conflict we sometimes have during a breakup for example… holding onto memories while trying to move forward.

What role do you think poetry plays in today’s world, and how can it continue to evolve?

In an increasingly fast-paced and digital society, poetry provides a space for introspection, empathy, and understanding. It’s a catalyst for individuals to connect with others on a deeper level.

There’s so much power in words. Poetry has and always will be a channel of social change because words provoke thoughts, thoughts provoke conversations and conversations provoke change.
