Cardi B is a new mum once again. The rapper just shared the first photos of her baby girl giving fans a glimpse of her family’s precious moments at the hospital.

“The prettiest lil thing 🌸🌸 9/7/24 💖💖💖,” Cardi captioned her Instagram photos which featured photos with Offset, and their children: Kulture, 5, and Wave, 2.

In the pictures, Cardi B is seen cradling her newborn while lying in a hospital bed. The baby, wrapped in a soft blanket and wearing a pink beanie, looks peaceful in her mother’s arms. Cardi, never to be caught unfresh even after a baby delivery, adds a bit of glam to the hospital setting with layers of bling on her wrist.

Just over a month ago, on August 1st, Cardi B announced her pregnancy with a stunning rooftop photoshoot. Draped in a red dress and fur, she lovingly cradled her baby bump, expressing joy and gratitude for this new chapter in her life.

The Junior Tigress, Nigeria’s U18 women’s basketball team, has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Pretoria, South Africa, after a decisive 66-51 victory over Egypt. This marks the first time in 14 years that Nigeria has advanced to the semifinals of this tournament.

Coming into the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams, the Junior D’Tigress wasted no time establishing dominance against previously unbeaten Egypt, leading 24-13 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they extended their lead to 37-24 at halftime.

Although the third quarter presented some challenges with turnovers and foul trouble, their defence stayed strong, and they maintained offensive pressure with fluid ball movement, ending the third with a comfortable 54-36 lead.

Egypt, who had defeated Nigeria 72-60 in the opening game of the tournament, couldn’t replicate their earlier success. Nigeria’s squad sought redemption and found it. Abigail Isaac was a standout player, posting a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Next, Nigeria will face Uganda in the semifinals on Friday at 5:00 p.m. (GMT+2), while Cameroon will take on Mali in the other semifinal matchup.

Watch the highlights from the quarter-final between Egypt and Nigeria below.

How we met
By the bride, Ifunanya:

Kingsley and I met on a hot summer evening at a graduation party of a mutual family friend. We exchanged contacts and started talking. We planned our first date which ended up being the worst dates I have ever being to (I told him to surprise me for our first date and he took me to a restaurant that only served steak, I hate steak lol). During our first date, we clicked and we found out we had the same vision and goals. First date turned to multiple dates now to forever.

Tsitse and Tofa met in church and a nudge from two mutual friends transformed them from friendly strangers into something much more.

As they embark on their beautiful journey, we are yet reminded that all it takes is a little push from fate—and a couple of friends—for true love to find its way. They are serving premium alté vibes with their pre-wedding shoot and each frame is an artistic display of their beautiful love. No doubt, these two were meant to be and their pre-wedding photos are proof.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the couple, Tsitse & Tofa:

Our story kicked off in 2015 when we were both university students, living it up in the vibrant city of Brighton. Our paths first crossed in the cozy, welcoming vibe of our shared church community. Back then, we were more like friendly strangers, exchanging polite nods and small talk. For the first two years, we stayed in our own worlds, practically acquaintances, despite orbiting the same circles.

But fate, with its cheeky sense of timing, had other plans. Thanks to a little nudge from two mutual friends, we started spending more time together. What began as casual chats slowly turned into something more electric. By 2018, our friendship had sparked into a close, unbreakable bond. The shift from casual friends to something deeper felt so natural, it was almost like they were always meant to find each other.

As our connection grew, our story flowed naturally toward a magical moment in January 2024. In a setting filled with love and anticipation, Tofarati took a deep breath, got down on one knee, and popped the question that would change everything. That single, heart-stopping moment was the culmination of years of laughter, shared secrets, and a deepening love—a love that promises a lifetime of adventure and excitement.

Kanyin and Zak crossed paths for the first time at a friend’s birthday party… or so she thought. Unknown to her, he had actually been in her Twitter DMs three years earlier!

They bonded instantly at the party, and after that, it was clear that Cupid had something magical in store for them. Zak planned an intimate proposal, where he asked Kanyin to marry him, and she joyfully said ‘yes.’ As they gear up for their special day, we can’t help but swoon over their sweet love story. Their pre-wedding photos radiate pure joy and chemistry, capturing the essence of a love that was truly meant to be.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Kanyin:

We met at a friend’s birthday party. It was a house party, and he came with some mutual friends. He stood beside my friends and me, and I couldn’t stop admiring how handsome he looked. He was wearing sneakers, a shirt, and trousers. Honestly, I’m not one to admire guys in sneakers, but trust me, he looked really good, and I couldn’t stop admiring him. I was seriously admiring him that night and I couldn’t stop staring at intervals. He looked so peaceful and calm… I was hoping he was feeling the girl. Luckily for me, he was feeling the fine girl and he actually knew me. He had sent me a DM on Twitter about three years before we met at the party. He reminded me later of how we had once spoken on the phone.

Here’s how Zak popped the question:

We were having a conversation on a random day after work, and I was talking about how I needed to relax and wanted to go to a hotel for the weekend (I say this every market day ). He would always say no, but at some point in the conversation that day, he started indulging me and said we should go. He later suggested adding a dinner too, where I would dress up, he would get me a dress, pay for a makeup artist, and arrange for a nail tech to fix my nails. I don’t know, but the moment he said those things, I knew it was going to be a proposal. But of course, I kept quiet because I didn’t want to ruin the surprise. The only thing I was not sure of was where it was going to be, but I knew I was going to get proposed to that weekend. I really looked forward to it because I was excited to see what he had planned. I’m a proposal girlie, and it’s one thing I had always looked forward to in my life. I’m glad he listened and tried all he could to surprise me and make me happy.

Thanks to a thoughtful friend who played matchmaker, Banke and Norman found their way to each other, and the rest is a beautiful love story.

As they journey into a lifetime of bliss, they had a Yoruba traditional wedding where Norman and his family formally asked for Banke’s hand in marriage. Their wedding was a heartwarming mix of love, culture, and exquisite style. Surrounded by their loved ones, the lovebirds celebrated not just their union, but also the beautiful merging of their families and traditions. It was a day filled with laughter and beautiful moments – You certainly want to take it all in as you scroll.  😍

Enjoy their wedding photos and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Banke:

Norman and I first met in my sophomore year of university. His best friend and roommate (Ridwan) at the time invited me to volunteer at a homeless shelter and introduced me to Norman. We didn’t say much to each other, but he followed me on Instagram right after we were done volunteering. I never saw him again until my senior year of university. I was about to graduate, and I only had a few credits left so I decided to take a swimming class as an elective.

It turned out that Norman’s best friend Ridwan was taking the same class! After swimming class one day, he asked if he and Norman could visit me and my roommate in our apartment downtown and I said of course. When he came over, he was a bit shy but seemed nice. The next day he came over to the bank where I was working part-time to open an account (he didn’t need one, he already had one) and texted me right after he left. We’ve been together ever since!

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have made a spectacular start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, defeating the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 3-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Super Eagles delivered a powerful performance, highlighted by two second-half goals from Ademola Lookman and substitute Victor Osimhen. Ademola’s  late first-half strike gave Nigeria the lead going into the break.

The match saw a dominant display from the home side. Ademola Lookman, who just got nominated for a Ballon d’Or award, scored a brilliant solo goal before halftime. In the second half, Victor Osimhen extended Nigeria’s lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute, with Ademola adding his second goal shortly after to complete the 3-0 victory.

Despite Benin’s efforts to find their rhythm, their first shot on goal only came in the 40th minute, and it was expertly saved by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

At the previous AFCON in Ivory Coast, Nigeria clinched a silver medal. Now, they’re aiming for another spot in the prestigious continental tournament. Drawn in Group D alongside Benin, Rwanda, and Libya, Nigeria’s next match is against Rwanda at Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10.

On her first attempt, Onyinyechi lifted 140kg, placing herself in gold medal contention. For her second attempt, she raised the bar to 145kg, breaking the Paralympic record by 3kg. Imagine getting all set for a dinner date and upon getting to the venue, you realise it’s your proposal! After three years of building their love, Kola decided to take that next big step with his soulmate, Ifeoma. 😍

With so much attention to detail, he planned a perfect surprise proposal that would forever be etched in their memories. With the help of their closest friends and family, he planned a proposal to reflect their sweet journey together. He went down on one knee and asked her to marry him… Of course, she said ‘Yes!’

See how it all happened below:

Here’s how Kola popped the question:

Ifeoma: On this beautiful night, I thought we were just having a normal dinner. Though I was a bit suspicious, I’ve always been since we checked my ring size about a month ago. I kept asking him almost every day when he would propose so I could prepare for it. 😂 I didn’t know he had it all planned out already, he’s always been intentional about the beautiful surprises I got in these 3 years of love. And this takes the cake!!

Kola: I suggested she fix her nails for our trip, hinting at what was to come (cause she doesn’t like fixing her nails but for sure would want it done for her proposal). She had showed me and saved her ideal proposal setup on her Instagram, so I took careful notes of what my girl likes.

Ifeoma: We arrived at this lovely rooftop with friends and my sibling there, It was the perfectttt moment. The sweetest and easiest yes I have ever said! I’m getting married to the absolute love of my life guysss!!!

Chidimma Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, recently appeared on BBC News Pidgin, where she shared the emotional journey that led her from Miss South Africa (SA) to winning the Nigerian title of Miss Universe.

“When I heard my name called, I had a sense of relief, a sense of accomplishment… It was a very powerful moment for me,” she revealed, reflecting on the moment she was announced as the winner.

Chidimma opened up about the tears she shed, overwhelmed by the realisation of her achievement. Initially, she had reservations about pageantry, thinking it was only for younger women. However, after learning more about it, she became intrigued and decided to sign up for Miss SA in 2022. Though she didn’t make it that year, her determination drove her to try again in 2024, where she reached the top 13.

Despite feeling hesitant about accepting the Miss Universe Nigeria invitation, as it came so soon after her withdrawal from Miss SA, her resilience pushed her to take on the challenge.

She also shared her excitement about winning the crown and her goal to represent Nigeria on the global stage at Miss Universe.

Ify and Oscar’s love story is a tale of two high school friends who have grown in love over the years.

It all began with a spontaneous introduction, and even though Oscar might have found it unexpected, Ify made quite an impression on him. As time passed, one thing they held onto through the years was their friendship. Now, that friendship has blossomed into something even more beautiful and we are super pumped! As they gear up for their big day, they are sharing a glimpse of their sweet love with their pre-wedding photos. Each frame is a breath of fresh air and would leave a smile on your face.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the groom, Oscar:

“Hey, how are you? My name is Ify.” Those were the first words she ever said to me. I was just 12, and she, an 11-year-old girl, walked up to me like we had known each other forever. I remember looking at her, then looking away, thinking, Doesn’t she know I’m her senior? I was in JSS 3, and she was in JSS 2, both of us were students at Caleb International College, Magodo. That was the first time I saw her, a little shy, yet so bold.

From that day on, I saw her a couple more times, and each time, we exchanged brief words. Her shy smiles and blushes whenever we talked became something I looked forward to, even if it was just for a few moments at a time. But then, as the new term started, I realized she was no longer around. I didn’t see her smiles or hear her voice in the hallways. I thought to myself, Maybe she moved to another school. Then one evening, out of the blue, I got a message on Facebook. “Hey Oscar, it’s Ify. I left Caleb, I moved back to the US.” My heart, even as a 13-year-old, skipped a beat with joy. I was so happy to hear from her, even if it was just through a message.

From that moment on, we kept in touch, talking at least once every three months, sometimes more, sometimes less. But every conversation, no matter how brief, meant the world to me. And then, after all those years, we saw each other again in March 2022. It was like no time had passed at all. That little connection we had when we were just kids had grown into something much deeper, something that has now become our love story.

Now, as we stand on the brink of a new chapter, I can’t help but feel grateful for every step that brought us here. Our love story is one of growth, resilience, and unwavering commitment, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for us.

Ashley and Beka found love one chilly night in Houston. Both had planned to stay in that day; however, a nudge from Cupid led them into each other’s arms.

They formed an instant connection, and it was evident that something special was unfolding. Now, his chance encounter has blossomed into their forever love story. Beka planned a romantic indoor proposal where he asked Ashley to marry him. Amid the breathtaking ambience of roses, lit candles, and the warmth of their love, they made a promise to spend the rest of their lives together. 😍

Enjoy their proposal photos and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Ashley:

Even though neither of us had planned to go out, fate brought us together one chilly Houston night.  Our connection was immediate and undeniable. A few days later, what was meant to be a simple dinner date turned into an enchanting evening of exploring the city, unwilling to part from each other’s side. From that magical night on, we have been inseparable.

Isn’t it amazing how a stranger at work can become your soulmate? Ofure and Deji were colleagues, and what started as a simple work relationship ended up being a classic rom-com.

They reconnected shortly after relocating to new cities and bonded over movies and light-hearted conversations. Soon, sparks began to fly, and here they are today, on a beautiful journey of bliss. As they gear up for their big day, we get to catch a glimpse of their sweet love with their pre-wedding shoot. They make such a perfect pair and we are totally rooting for them.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Ofure:

In 2018, I started working at Deloitte and Deji was one of the senior consultants in my department. I would say the first year I was there, we barely spoke. I always tell people we were not friends and I think he low-key didn’t like me. 🤣 Fast forward to 2019, I left Deloitte and we connected on Instagram. I moved to Canada a few months later and he would check in on me and ask how I was doing and settling in. One of the things we first bonded over was our love for the show, ‘The Men’s Club’. I remember our very first long conversation, I was laughing like a teenage girl on the bus on my way to get my nails done and that day, I realized we had so much in common. So we became friends by the end of 2019 and you know just people who knew each other but nothing more than that.

In October 2020 I had a dream about Deji. Yes, I know this sounds cliché but yes I did dream about him and it was an interesting dream because I woke up very emotional. I had not talked to him in a while, but I was just like “Ok maybe it’s just one of those things”. I started getting ready for the day and when I picked up my phone and checked Instagram his story was the first on my TL. At this point, I’m just like what is going on here. And because of the dream I was a bit apprehensive to say hello which I would normally have done. After a while, I talked myself out of it and said I was going to say hi and checked in on him since we were friends. Now, I know it was definitely God speaking to me. We got talking and a couple of minutes into our chat, he said “I really missed talking to you” and I was thinking the exact same thing.

He would never agree to this, but I asked him for his number first because I only had his Instagram and I wanted to continue talking with him. We chatted the whole day. I wanted to talk to him the next day, but then it was awkward because we’ve never talked that much and so I came up with the smart idea to ask him for a workout playlist because the day before we talked a lot about music and shared our favorite songs. I know that was slick move, but he did create a playlist and sent it to me so I guess that worked. We have never stopped talking since that day in October 2020 and now we get to spend the rest of our lives talking, sharing music and creating a beautiful life together.

How we met
By the groom, Deji:

I first met Ofure in 2018 when she joined Deloitte but interestingly enough, we barely had any meaningful interactions outside of work which was also seldom because we barely worked on any files together. Fast forward to 2019, I was in South Africa at the time and had heard from some other colleagues in back in Nigeria that she had resigned and was relocating to Canada. A couple of weeks after that, her IG profile popped up on my recommended page (the real truth is that I looked for her profile on IG…LOL) and I followed her. I guess some seeds of love had been sown unbeknownst to me. I DM’d her a few days later when she posted a picture from her going away party on her IG stories; you know just wishing her the very best in her new journey. From 2019 to 2020 we had the odd interaction here and there in the DMs, usually led by the occasional reply to each other’s IG stories.

Sometime in 2020, during the the pandemic, I posted an old photo of myself and a few other colleagues taken in the office. She replied to the story and we got chatting in the DMs as we occasionally did. But this time it was different…we chatted the whole day about nothing and everything, our shared love for Coldplay, how we’d been coping with living through the pandemic, other shared interests. My rizz was so strong that she asked for my number at the end of the day (but the truth is that I would have asked for hers to but she only beat me to it). I wanted to get to know her more!!! Suffice it to say that I haven’t stopped chatting with her since then. And from here on it’s till infinity and beyond.

Hailey and Justin Bieber have officially stepped into the world of parenthood. Justin shared the joyous news on Instagram, posting an adorable photo of their newborn son’s tiny foot. Their baby boy, named Jack Blues Bieber, was welcomed with the heartfelt caption, “WELCOME HOME JACK BLUES BIEBER 🐻.”

The couple first revealed their pregnancy in May during a dual celebration of their vow renewal and maternity shoot. They shared a beautiful carousel of videos and photos from a photoshoot in a serene field, with Hailey cradling her baby bump in a flowing, lacy white dress.

Since tying the knot in September 2018, the Canadian singer and beauty entrepreneur have been open about their desire to start a family. In an interview with GQ last October, Hailey shared that motherhood “is something that I look forward to. It’s also such a private, intimate thing. It’s something that’s going to come when it comes.”

Congratulations to the Biebers on this precious new chapter.

In the world of Big Brother Naija, most housemates enter the show as singles. Some find love within its walls, and if fate smiles upon them, these relationships can blossom beyond the show, sometimes even leading to marriage. But for KayXtra (Kassia Sule) and KellyRae (Kellyrae Sule), who make up the pair known as DoubleKay, their love story is already written—they’re not just a couple; they’re a married couple, taking on the BBNaija No Loose Guard edition together.

Unlike others, they didn’t step into the house as singles; they entered as a married couple. In a recent conversation with Toby Forge of Streeze, Kassia caught Toby’s interest, but he was unaware of her marital status. DoubleKay have skillfully kept their marriage private from the other housemates.

Both hailing from Delta State, Kassia is an entrepreneur, while KellyRae is a professional singer. Their love story spans over nine years, beginning with a playful game of hard-to-get that eventually led to their fairy tale romance. KellyRae proposed in November last year, and they sealed their love in February this year.

Heman Bekele’s journey from a curious young boy to TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year began with a simple love of asking questions. “Before I can remember, I’ve always had such a huge love for knowing things around the world and being curious,” Heman told John Yang on PBS NewsHour. “That curiosity grew into my love and passion for science, and slowly, it progressed into creating this bar of soap.”

At just 15, Heman has spent the past year developing a groundbreaking bar of soap that could treat the early stages of skin cancer. His project won him the 2023 Young Scientist Challenge, a middle school science competition, that features outstanding innovations from young scientists that demonstrate the power of science to improve the world hosted by 3M and Discovery Education. This recognition came with a $25,000 prize, most of which Heman is reinvesting into his project, with the remainder supporting his education.

The soap, known as SCTS (Skin Cancer Treating Soap), is a compound-based formula infused with cancer-fighting chemicals. One key ingredient, Imidazoquinolines, is wrapped in a lipid-based nanoparticle. According to Heman, while the soap’s suds wash away, the medicinal components remain on the skin to continue their work. His goal wasn’t just to fight skin cancer but to create an accessible, affordable treatment for it.

This innovative approach to treating skin cancer—usually tackled through traditional methods or surgery—earned him the title of TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. “I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research,” Heman told TIME Magazine. “Whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field, it’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”

Born in Addis Ababa, Heman’s inspiration for the soap came from watching people work under the harsh sun. At the age of 4, he moved to the United States with his family, but those early memories stayed with him. Reflecting on his experience, Heman noted that while he didn’t think much of the sun’s impact as a child, moving to America made him realise how serious the problem of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation is.

He recalls, “Growing up in Ethiopia, I always thought people were always getting hit by the hot sun working outside. I didn’t think much of it when I was really little, but as I grew up I realised how big of an issue [skin cancer] really is. Not only in Ethiopia but everywhere around the world.”

The staggering costs of skin cancer treatment further fueled his determination to find a solution: “And when [people] do end up getting skin cancer, it’s crazy expensive [to treat] and not affordable in the slightest. Skin cancer does have cures and skin cancer is treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally is almost $40,000. When I heard those really shocking statistics it really inspired me to create a more affordable and accessible solution… ”

Heman hopes to bring the SCTS to the market by 2028 and make skin cancer treatment affordable. To turn this vision into reality, he dedicates part of his weekdays to working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

Guinness World Records has officially recognised Brian Nwana, as the record holder for Most Fast Food Restaurants visited in 24 hours. His record surpasses the former record of 100 restaurants, held by Canadian YouTuber Eric Decker, known as Airrack.

On April 24th, Brian, a 22-year-old food content creator from Abuja, embarked on this ambitious journey to spotlight Abuja-based food businesses and showcase the richness of Nigerian cuisine. Although his original goal was to visit 120 restaurants, he exceeded expectations, stopping by 150 eateries. His journey started at 5 pm at Chicken Republic in Gwarinpa and ended 24 hours later at Truck Central.

What makes Brian’s feat even more impressive is that he completed the entire route on foot, without using any form of transportation. Along the way, he sampled a variety of dishes—from Nigerian staples like Moin Moin and Amala to global favourites like shawarma, pizza, fried chicken, and burgers.

“This record goes to show that the Nigerian food space is worth paying attention to,” Brian shared. “I would like to encourage people from around the world to come and explore the Nigerian food space.”

It’s not uncommon for identical twins to share a bond so strong that it shapes their entire lives, from childhood through adulthood. They often wear matching outfits, sport the same hairstyles, and even pursue similar passions. In the Big Brother house, we’ve seen this dynamic play out with the Wanni x Handi twins, who are both DJs and performers. Similarly, the Mbadiwe Twins, Ocee and Ozee, are both entertainers and legal professionals, making their mark on the show this season.

The Mbadiwe Twins have a remarkable journey together, highlighted by earning their master’s degrees, a milestone they say cemented their brotherhood. Their bond extends into business ventures as well, making them a formidable duo both inside and outside the Big Brother house.

Sons of the well-known businessman and Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, and grandsons of the Nigerian First Republic nationalist and statesman, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Ocee and Ozee are not just legal experts but also successful entrepreneurs and entertainers.

Since the “No Loose Guard” season of Big Brother Naija kicked off, they’ve enjoyed a solid run, including being the first to win the Head of House title and securing immunity from eviction in the second week. Recently, Ocee shared the heartwarming news of his engagement and that he and his fiancee are expecting a baby.

Check out these 10 photos that perfectly capture the bond between the Mbadiwe Twins and their shared journey:

Have you ever wondered if you’ve met your soulmate before without knowing? Perhaps through a serendipitous encounter that eventually makes sense in hindsight.

Teni and Seyi’s sweet story is a testament to the fact that love is intentional with its plans. It positions people in the right place at the right time, guiding them towards each other in ways they might not expect. The sweethearts went from being classmates in primary school to lovers. As they take a beautiful step toward forever, we get to catch a glimpse of their timeless love through their vintage-themed pre-wedding shoot. Each frame exudes warmth and beauty… you certainly want to take it all in as you scroll.

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the couple, Seyi and Teni:

We met at the age of 7 in Grange Primary School and the rest was history. To be more specific, we lost contact after Seyi relocated around the age of 10 but fortuitously reconnected again in 2013 over social media – a classic case of sliding into the DMs on Seyi’s part, the perfect cyber gentleman. 😊 Ironically, Seyi had no idea we had met before at the time but a Grange alumni class photo quickly cleared that up – a happy reunion indeed.

We quickly became best friends and even though our careers pulled us in different directions and countries, our shared love for culture, art and food kept our paths inextricably intertwined over the years until we decided to be apart no more and tied the knot in the Spring months of 2024 – the origins of ST Baks. With God at our foundation, we remain entirely committed and deeply devoted to each other with a focus on growing together and enjoying as many moments as we can together. Forever and always St Baks.

As he does every year, Barack Obama has shared his summer playlist, showcasing the tracks that have been on heavy rotation for him this season. The former U.S. president describes his playlist as an “eclectic mix,” featuring different artists that reflect his broad musical tastes.

With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately – and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to!

Among the standout artists featured this year are Nigerian stars Tems and Rema, along with South Africa’s Tyla. Tems, who was previously featured on Barack Obama’s end-of-year playlist with “Me & U,” returns with “Love Me Jeje” from her latest album, “Born In The Wild.”

Rema, who had his hit “Calm Down” grace Barack Obama’s 2022 playlist, is back with “Yayo,” the fourth track from his  “HEIS” album, and Tyla, whose Grammy-winning hit “Water” was featured on Barack Obama’s 2023 end-of-the-year playlist, also made an appearance on his 2024 summer playlist with “Jump,” a track from her self-titled album “Tyla,” featuring Gunna and Skillibeng.

Adebola Williams Celebrates Mentor Kola Adesina on His 60th Birthday https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/08/adebola-williams-celebrates-kola-adesina-on-his-60th-birthday/ Mon, 12 Aug 2024 10:24:28 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1668236 Sir K is a quiet doer, not concerned with optics, only impact. A few days ago, someone asked me to name the top 5 most influential mentors in my life. Without hesitation, I mentioned Sir K as one of them. One trait that all my mentors share is an admirable work ethic. They prioritise hard work and commitment over privileges, connections, and recognition. Sir K, in particular, sees hard work as the true measure of one’s character. His journey from Shomolu to the boardroom resonates deeply with my own from Surulere. I have been fortunate to learn from his wealth of wisdom.

His work as an executive director at the Sahara Group has helped to position the multinational conglomerate as a market leader in the fossil and renewable energies industry. His impact is felt in Nigeria, where he advises on the boards of several influential companies including the largest power distribution business and the largest thermal plant in the region, serving thirty million homes and businesses in Nigeria alone. He also believes in knowledge sharing and routinely accepts opportunities to share his experience on energy-related issues with industry leaders. Sir K has leveraged years of experience in management and business diplomacy and his Harvard and Wharton degrees to help governments across Africa devise innovative solutions to the continent’s energy problems. His contributions to the development of Nigeria’s contemporary economy are inimitable, and he demonstrates his belief in the potential of our young talent by facilitating the employment of 1,000 engineers across different functions across his organisations.

As the chair of our company’s board of directors, he demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills and offered uncommon wisdom that helped us push our business to new frontiers. He was always available for meetings, punctual with obligations, available to guide in crisis, nurture in private, and promote our cause in public. When I have been at a crossroads in recent years, I have turned to him for his invaluable wisdom and his words have illuminated my path.

When we began planning his 60th birthday, he made it clear that he wanted a small and solemn celebration. It was unexpected, especially for a Nigerian man of his standing. Here, it is expected that at 60, a man should receive tributes and praises that massage his ego and exaggerate his achievements. But not Sir K. He said, “I just want people to celebrate with friends and family. I want them and me to have fun. I want it to be a fun night. It’s not about me or my ego. It’s just a night to thank God who has made it all possible by feasting with friends.” Well, he isn’t winning that battle but that’s his desire and it shows the kind of man he is.

Sir K has a special gift of seeing a seed and the tree it can become. Many evenings, I have been invited to his dinner table to break bread with young entrepreneurs, tech, finance, oil and gas CEOs, comedians, and musicians; some upcoming, a few established. He always surrounds himself with young people especially those he can help up the ladder.

At his birthday celebration, the play presented is by a young group in his church. When we extensively discussed options, we had many groups with a proven track record of delivering excellent performances. Sir K was emphatic that this group should do it. He said, “I want to give them a chance”. Trusting his discernment, I encouraged the committee to let them audition, and if we were unsatisfied, we would make adjustments.

And boy, did they deliver! When I watched the rehearsals, this little-known theatre amazed me, and, because of this great man’s belief, they presented before presidents, captains of industry and the high and mighty.

One shy to take centre stage, one not wanting to compete with God, one who just wants to be. I have walked into several rooms by his side where he insists I am accorded the same honour as he. He is a simple man who prefers subtlety to shows of power.

I remember one evening he asked me to come with him to an event where he wanted me to meet a president of a country. It was a last-minute decision and he hadn’t had the time to inform the organisers. On getting there, there was a bit of chaos at the door because of the lack of prior notice. The organisers pleaded that he be seated whilst they made accommodations for me. He thanked them but refused to go in. He stood with me until arrangements were made to seat me.

This was a humbling and educational experience for me. A demonstration of the kind of consideration that has made him a friend to presidents. You would be hard-pressed to find a photo of him with a global leader anywhere on the internet, except for the rare occasions when official duties necessitate. But Sir K is a trusted advisor to many global leaders and captains of industry because he has earned their trust, proven his capacity and shown discretion.

I know this will upset Sir K, but I feel the occasion demands that I break the strict policy of silence he has about his philanthropy and talk about some of the many ways he has given back to his community. His philanthropy encompasses infrastructural development, humanitarian work, education, access to healthcare, innovation and mentorship. Sir K is a quiet doer, not concerned with optics, only impact. Thousands of us are grateful beneficiaries of his limitless potential for charity.

Sir Kola Adesina is a present father to his children Oluwatimilehn, Oluwagbemisoke and Oluwafamimora, and an exemplary husband to Mosunmola, his wife. His devotion to his family and faith is only rivalled by his commitment to corporate excellence. Sir K would always say, “Be nothing and God everything”. He never jokes with his prayers at dusk nor his vigils at dawn and plays an active role in his church. Unlike many, he also worships at a local church and supports all their projects. He believes that God is everywhere, but like Elijah, he hears God best where there is less noise. With national honours to his name and global recognition, I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor.

Today, I thank Sir Kola Adesina for giving me unprecedented access to learn from his life, for using his candle to light mine, and for holding my hand up as I climb the ladder of life. I doff my hat to a leader, a friend, a nation-builder, a mentor, and an exemplary husband and father.

Happy birthday, sir and thank you!

Rena Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been named the Best Coach of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

At just 32 years old, Rena is the only first female Nigerian basketball coach and also one of the youngest coaches in Olympic history. Under her leadership, D’Tigress achieved historic milestones, advancing to the Olympic quarterfinals for the first time ever.

D’Tigress made a statement from the start, defeating the Opals of Australia—ranked third globally—in a stunning 75-62 victory on the opening day. This win marked their first Olympic game victory in 20 years, following their 68-64 triumph over South Korea in Athens 2004.

Their momentum continued as they upset fifth-ranked Canada with a 79-70 score, making history as the first African team to compete in the Olympic quarterfinals and secure two wins at the Games.

Though their remarkable run ended in the quarterfinals against the United States, D’Tigress put up a fierce fight until the final whistle.

FIBA recognised Wakama’s leadership as a key factor in Nigeria’s unprecedented success, calling it “the most impactful performance by an African team in Olympic Basketball Tournament history.” FIBA added, “One of the main drivers of Nigeria’s unprecedented success was the leadership of playcaller Rena Wakama.”

Faith Kipyegon has once again etched her name into the annals of history, breaking her Olympic record to win her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 1500m at the Paris Olympics.

Already regarded as the greatest to ever compete in the 1500 metres, Faith’s stunning time of 3:51.29 makes her the first woman to win three Olympic golds in the same track discipline.

The 30-year-old Kenyan middle and long-distance runner, who previously claimed victory in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, demonstrated her unparalleled tactical prowess at the Stade de France. Allowing her competitors to set the early pace, Faith strategically positioned herself before launching a decisive sprint in the final 200 metres, leaving Australia’s Jessica Hull and Great Britain’s Georgia Bell to fight for silver and bronze.

She also won a gold medal in the 1,500 m at the 2017, 2022 and 2023 World Athletics Championships and in the 5,000m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

Letsile Tebogo has won Botswana’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, making history at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The 21-year-old sprinter triumphed in the men’s 200m final, clocking an impressive 19.46 seconds. Letsile’s victory saw him outpace American runners Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles, who finished in 19.62 and 19.70 seconds, respectively.

This remarkable achievement also crowns Letsile as the first African to win gold in the 200m sprint at the Olympics. Already known for setting a national record of 9.86 seconds in the 100m final, Letsile sped up in the last 50 metres of the 200m race. He crossed the finish line in 19.46 seconds, beating his chest in celebration as he became the fifth-fastest man in history over the 200m distance.

“It means a lot to the African continent because now they see Africa as a sprinting home, so we just had to make sure that the message is loud and clear,” said Letsile. “It was really a beautiful race for me,” he added.

His victory is particularly meaningful, as he had taken a month-long break from training following the death of his mother in May. In a heartfelt tribute, he celebrated his win wearing spikes inscribed with his late mother’s date of birth. “It’s basically me carrying her through every stride that I take inside the field,” Letsile explained.

Since Nigeria began participating in the Olympics, the country has had only two female athletes represent it in taekwondo. The first was Princess Dudu, who competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and the second is Elizabeth Anyanacho, now a two-time Olympian.

Elizabeth made her Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games, where she faced Turkey and lost 7-12. Although she had initially planned to compete at the Olympics in 2024, her journey was expedited. This year, she returns to represent Nigeria at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, making history as the first female Nigerian athlete to qualify for back-to-back Olympic Games in taekwondo.

At 25 years old, Elizabeth secured her spot in Paris by defeating Kenya’s Jully Musangi in the -67kg category at the 2024 African Taekwondo Olympic Qualification Tournament in Dakar, Senegal. Her journey to this point has been marked by significant accomplishments, including a gold medal at the 13th African Games in Ghana and a silver medal at the 2023 African Taekwondo Championships in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Elizabeth’s success has earned her praise from key figures in Nigerian sports. The President of the National Olympic Committee, Habu Gumel, lauded her as a “rising star” committed to representing the nation with pride in Paris. Abdullahi Saidu, President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), also commended her efforts, stating, “Despite other athletes missing out in the automatic qualification race for Paris 2024, Elizabeth fought like the champion and made it to the final.”

He also expressed his confidence in Elizabeth’s abilities, noting that her hard work and dedication have paid off, and she is ready to compete as a more mature athlete at the Paris Games.

Tomorrow, August 9th, Elizabeth will face Jie of China in the Women’s -67kg Round of 16 Match 6 at 10:11 AM.

Samuel Ogazi has made history as the first Nigerian man since 1988 to qualify for the Olympic 400-metre final. The 18-year-old athlete achieved this feat with a third-place finish in Heat 3 of the semifinals, clocking a new personal-best time of 44.41 seconds at the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Currently an undergraduate at the University of Alabama, Samuel has established himself as a prominent figure in track and field. He holds the Nigerian under-18 record for the 400 metres, having run 45.35 seconds in March. His performance at the Olympics adds to an impressive list of achievements, including winning the 200m and 400m titles at the 2023 African U18 and U20 Championships in Athletics in Ndola, Zambia. He also bagged gold in the 200m and 400m at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago, where he set a new games record with his Nigerian team in the mixed 4x100m relay.

This milestone marks the first time Nigeria has been represented in the Olympic men’s 400-metre final since Innocent Egbunike participated in Seoul 1988, where he finished fifth with a time of 44.72 seconds.

Samuel is set to compete in the final today at 9:20 pm, running in lane two. He’ll be up against competitors such as Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain and Michael Norman of the USA.

In their first match at the ongoing 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress, achieved a historic victory by defeating the Opals of Australia in a stunning 75-62 at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium today in the Women’s Olympic Basketball event. This win marks their first Olympic game victory in 20 years since their 68-64 win over South Korea in Athens 2004.

Initially underestimated, D’Tigress recovered from a slow start, winning the first quarter 18-17. They followed up with an impressive second quarter, outscoring the Opals 23-11, establishing a significant lead. After the break, the Australians rallied, winning the third quarter 19-10. However, Nigeria responded with a commanding fourth quarter, winning 24-15, sparking wild celebrations in their technical area. Ezinne Kalu led the team with a stellar performance, scoring 19 points, grabbing five rebounds, and dishing out five assists.

Nigeria’s 11-0 run to close the first half provided a crucial 13-point lead heading into the locker rooms. Despite the Opals narrowing the gap to a one-shot game in the final period, Amy Okonkwo calmed Nigerian nerves with a clutch three-pointer. Nigeria made nine 3-pointers, their highest in any Olympic game, and achieved 15 steals, equalling their previous best in the competition.

“It feels so good. We stuck together and came together in adversity. This is what it is all about – you fight,” said Nigeria forward Amy Okonkwo.

Sometimes, cupid brings someone your way not once, but twice to create a perfect fairy tale together. Habiba and Ife first crossed paths during a workday in court.

As fate would have it, they crossed paths again, and this time the universe seemed determined to bring them closer. They soon became inseparable and decided that they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. As they count down to their big day, they are giving us a glimpse into their beautiful love with their pre-wedding photos. Theirs is a story which proves that when two people are meant to be, love will always find a way to bring them together. 😍

Enjoy their pre-wedding shoot and love story below:

How we met
By the bride, Habiba:

Sometime in 2019, I had to go to court which I generally do not like. I met Ife in the court room where we both had different matters and he was quite helpful to me. We chatted briefly and that was it. But as fate would have it, we met later that year at a different location and reconnected. We exchanged messages regularly and started hanging out for drinks occasionally. Sometime in 2020, we became inseparable, and since then, it has been a journey of two friends in love with each other. We are alike in so many ways and certainly meant for each other. We like to think that our union is divinely ordained. Call it destiny, call it divine timing—we’re just grateful to have stumbled upon each other in this wonderful adventure called life.

The Essence Festival is more than just a party. It’s the economic heart of New Orleans, drawing crowds that infuse life (and cash) into the city’s vibrant atmosphere. This year’s event, held from July 4th to 7th, was truly legendary. As I left my state last Wednesday and headed Southwest, I could feel the 30th-anniversary excitement of the Essence Film Festival in the air. This wasn’t just any event; it was a testament to Essence’s enduring impact on New Orleans, a city known for its lively spirit and annual extravaganzas. I enjoyed my time there last year and am glad to be back again this year. There are a few things that stood out to me.

NOVA Foundation Event: Supporting Black Filmmakers

Kicking off the list was an annual NOVAC Foundation event called “R&R” Reel reSET, in partnership with Film New Orleans, Office of Cultural Economy. In America, July 4th is Independence Day, and it’s refreshing to enjoy it with good people and listen to iconic music. The event was held in a house party style, in a quaint house with colourful exteriors and intricate ironwork. It was adorned with the tiniest little CRT Tellie screens chronicling the industry’s long history, making it informative and inspiring. I had the pleasure of chatting with India King Robins, and I learned that the NOVA Foundation event has been educating and providing opportunities for Black filmmakers since 1972. There were so many creatives in this small house, and fireworks sparked in the sky across the street. I particularly enjoyed some nice moments with Uche Jumbo, Eso Dike, my lovely South African Namnam, star of Savage Beauty, Nambitha Ben Mawazi, and CNN Africa’s Stephanie Busari.

Nigeria Panel at Cultural Connections Stage: Celebrating Nollywood Giants

Trust Naija not to carry last. This year’s Nigeria panel “Building Bridges: Collaborating with Nollywood for Global Success,” brought together influential figures from the Nigerian movie industry. The panel included Omotola Jalade, Uche Jumbo, Eso Dike, and a young rising star from “Iwájú” Simisola Gbadamosi. Moderated by, Stephanie Busari, and convened by Toyosi Etim-Effiong, the panel showcased Nollywood’s skyrocketing influence. Toyosi addressed the importance of exposure, and her questions consistently championed the interests of Nollywood. Omotola dropped some serious wisdom about perseverance and the importance of knocking on doors, emphasising courage and resilience as keys to success in the industry. She and Uche spoke from their experiences as mothers and stressed the necessity of balance. Uche’s mantra, “produce locally for the global audience,” underscored the importance of consistently telling our own stories and getting them right, to the best of our abilities.  Eso explained that an actor’s resume is cradled in their last film, so it’s best to give it all in every film an actor performs in. This session proved to be a powerful testament to Nollywood’s growing global footprint and the inspiring journeys of its stars. It was inspiring to watch the young star, Simisola sitting among her senior colleagues in the industry.

A Kismet Holiday for a Romantic Saturday

After the panel, we enjoyed some cinematic gems. I watched “A Kismet Holiday,” starring Derrick King and Nigerian-American actress Karen Obilom, who was dazzling in her first leading role since her standout performance in “Games People Play” opposite Lauren London. “Kismet” is a heartwarming Christmas movie about two strangers finding love in the most classic rom-com-y way imaginable, written by the talented Bree West. The film’s charming portrayal of Black love, combined with beautiful lighting and a compelling story, made it a festival favourite. And guess what? It won the overall Best Film award at the festival. I couldn’t be happier for them.

Nine, the Movie: A Cinematic Masterpiece

If the verse “we battle not against flesh but wickedness in high places” were a film, it would be “NINE”. It is one of the most unique films I’ve seen at Essence. Screened on Sunday, this international fantasy thriller, produced by Angela White co-executive produced by Vinny Curry and Glenn Singleton was a visual and narrative delight. Directed and produced by Chris Attoh, who also starred in the film, “Nine” boasted a stellar cast from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and the United States, including Kate Henshaw, Rosemary Zimu, Juliet Ibrahim, and Damien D. Smith. The film’s stunning visuals, high-quality audio, and captivating story were evident. The plot revolves around a series of witchcraft-related murders in Ghana, with a grieving homicide detective and an elite all-female assassin group racing against time to prevent supernatural warfare. The film’s execution, reminiscent of the special effects seen in Netflix’s “Supacell,” pushed the boundaries of African cinema, delivering a visually stunning narrative that maintained cultural authenticity while appealing to international audiences.

Global Panel on Representation: Authentic Global Storytelling

Another major event on Sunday was the global panel on representation themed “Authentic Global Storytelling.” The panel included Nicole Amarteifio, Ozi Menakaya, Tanya .E. Taylor, Aml Ameen, Nadine Ibrahim and Sipho Dlamini from Universal. Juliet Ibrahim moderated the discussion, which focused on the challenges and opportunities in global storytelling. Distribution was a key topic, revealing differences between African markets and other regions. An executive explained why Apple TV tends to favour South Africa over Nigeria due to billing issues within Nigerian financial institutions, which are currently being addressed. The consensus was clear: African storytellers need to take ownership of their narratives and proactively network to achieve global recognition. Mekdese Haile, a young producer, raised the question of how prepared Africa is to embrace cinematic consumer behaviour, considering that by 2050, our continent will have the highest youth population worldwide, with one in four people on the planet being African, according to the New York Times. This highlighted the promising future of African cinema and reinforced the notion that it is indeed Africa’s time to shine.

Janet Jackson Concert: A Showstopper Performance

I had an amazing time at Essence with spectacular musical performances. Usher’s performance on Saturday was incredible, but Janet Jackson’s concert on Sunday was a total showstopper. Her unmatched energy, stage authority, and sheer grace captivated everyone. She danced effortlessly and proved once again why she is a legend. Victoria Monet also delivered an impressive performance, giving off strong Beyoncé vibes. However, Janet’s command of the stage was unparalleled. There was a special moment when she asked us to celebrate girl power by singing to our best friends. I had the chance to sit next to Deputy Harris and take some selfies. It was a vibe all through.

Memorable Encounters: Cool People and New Connections

The people one meets at Essence are always a highlight, and this year was no exception. I had the opportunity to reconnect with my old friends, comms queen Maliz Mahop, Essence producer Ama Larbi, and actor Kareem Grimes, and meet new faces like the incredibly talented Danielle Brooks and the hilarious Nigerian-American comedian Iyke Slimster.  The very inspiring Sarah Jakes and the adorable Little Van Van were a delight to watch up close on the Essence stages throughout the weekend. A chance encounter with Meagan Good over lunch was filled with mutual admiration and fun. I also had the pleasure of being introduced to the gorgeous Taja V. Simpson, Mike Merill, the fabulous Tajé Prest, Tiffany Yarde, the stunning model, Ms. Kristine, the incredible founder of Black Film Space, Lande Yoosof, and a few others.

Throughout the festival, every outfit was intentional, combining African prints with staples to keep things fresh and youthful, minimising the “auntie vibes.” My braids added an extra touch of flair, and yes, even Janet Jackson rocked the same braids.

The Essence Festival 2024 was a perfect blend of culture, cinema, music, and community, leaving me eagerly anticipating next year’s celebration. Despite not fully exploring the vendor marketplace this year, every moment added to the festival’s richness. Essence continues to be a cornerstone of cultural celebration in New Orleans, highlighted by the 30th anniversary of the Essence Film Festival. This year’s event underscored Essence’s enduring impact on NOLA, drawing crowds that contribute to the city’s vibrant atmosphere. See you next year, Essence.

His voice captivates you: a deep baritone, rich with experience and wisdom, instantly recognisable. It’s not just the voice; it’s also how he delivers his lines and embodies his characters that makes him so beloved and respected.

Olu Jacobs is a veteran Nigerian actor, a household name for generations who grew up watching movies on VHS and cassettes, or attending stage productions.

Born Oludotun Bayewu Jacobs (though known to all as Olu Jacobs), his passion for acting ignited after attending one of Herbert Ogunde’s annual concert parties in Kano. Though his parents hailed from Egba Alake in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Olu grew up in Kano where he received his early education. He later travelled to England to hone his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

Today, on his 82nd birthday, we celebrate his incredible career, which all began in the 1970s with appearances in British television series and international films like “The Goodies” (1971), “Till Death Us Do Part” (1974), “Barlow” (1975) “The Tomorrow People” (1978) and “The Dogs of War” (1980).

Tomike Adeoye was a guest at Sharon Ooja’s wedding in Abuja and she had a swell time. She travelled from Lagos to the capital city with her friends Enioluwa Adeola, Hilda Baci, Veekee James (who also designed their asoebi dresses), and her husband, Femi Atere.

On her YouTube channel, she shares a video of her fun moments and highlights from both the traditional and white weddings. It includes their arrival in Abuja, settling into their lavish hotel, getting prepped for the wedding (think makeup, nails, and last-minute bead adjustments on their dresses by Veekee James), content creation moments, and the main highlights of dancing and celebrating with the bride and her husband, Ugo. It was such a beautiful occasion.

The video takes you behind the scenes of Tomike’s experience at the wedding.
