The latest episode of the “Deep Dive with Teju Babyface” podcast delivers an inspiring narrative. Precious Oshideko, an information security analyst, began his career at the age of 40, proving that it’s never too late to start anew.

At 40, Precious had little knowledge of Microsoft or basic computer skills. Before moving to the United States, he served as a pastor, mainly guiding teenagers. But upon arriving in the USA, he aspired to break into the corporate world, despite lacking the technical skills typically required for a 9-to-5 job. Determined to learn, he opened his mind to new opportunities and embarked on a journey into the field of information security.

His story embodies the adage that “life begins at 40.” Currently pursuing a doctorate, Precious is set to be addressed as Dr. Oshideko by September.

In this conversation, Precious shares with Teju Babyface the details of his career journey, the challenges he encountered, and the resilience that helped him overcome them.

Africa is on the cusp of a technological revolution, driven by a burgeoning young population that is eager to embrace digital tools and skills. With a significant majority of its population under the age of 25, as confirmed by recent data from Wikipedia, the continent is uniquely positioned to harness the power of technology and leapfrog traditional development paths. This demographic advantage presents a tremendous opportunity for Africa to become a global leader in various socioeconomic spheres, including innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

To many organisations, technology is not just an industry; it is a catalyst for economic growth, social transformation, and improved quality of life across the continent. One such organisation is ALX, Africa’s leading tech career accelerator. A registered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to creating access to world-class tech training for millions of people in Africa and the world.

With a network of talent across Africa and a physical presence in eight African countries, including Nigeria, ALX recently held an innovative one-day tech boot camp specifically tailored for teenagers and young school leavers. During an engaging session, they were introduced to the fundamentals of pursuing a career in the tech space. This initiative broadens ALX’s revolutionary outreach to an even younger audience, laying the groundwork for a future-ready generation

ALX aims to foster Africa’s next generation of innovators, analytical thinkers, and leaders who can propel the continent forward. ALX strategically partnered with Slum2SchooAfrica, a volunteer-driven development organisation that empowers underserved children in slums and remote communities with quality education, entrepreneurial skills, and psychological support.

This partnership flourished with a one-day tech boot camp for fifty teenagers from the Slum2School Africa Community, with ALX facilitating the delivery of comprehensive and interactive, early-adoption sessions on relevant tech career paths, sparking the interest of the teenagers in building a tech career based on the introductory session held.

The reach toward the younger generation doesn’t end here. ALX recently launched ALX Pathway Foundations, an initiative in partnership with universities in the United States and Africa, offering high school graduates access to scholarships and funding opportunities.

ALX Pathway is a new opportunity for high school graduates looking to take their next step toward a future in tech. Over eight months, participants will develop skills in leadership, critical thinking, reasoning, entrepreneurship, and professionalism. They will also gain access to opportunities that will help accelerate their tech careers with one of the partnering universities

Africa’s journey towards becoming a global tech leader is fueled by a growing network of educational institutions that equip young minds with the necessary skills and foster a spirit of innovation. Organizations like ALX Africa are at the forefront of this movement. To learn more about the educational landscape shaping Africa’s tech future, visit the ALX Africa website.

Moses Babatope, a seasoned professional in the film industry, has launched Nile Media Entertainment Group, a new production and distribution company aimed at transforming African cinema. Named after the River Nile, this company will focus on cultural representation, industry excellence and sustainable practices.

The Nile Media Entertainment Group is a multifaceted enterprise comprising five subsidiaries: Nile Entertainment, which serves as the distribution arm covering both local and international markets; Nile Cinemas, offering luxury cinema experiences; Nile Motion Pictures, a production company focused on Nollywood films; Nile Studio Lab, a film village in Nigeria; and Nile Foundation, which acts as the CSR arm dedicated to community development through film.

Moses Babatope, also the co-founder of FilmHouse Group and managing director of FilmOne Entertainment, has over 20 years of experience in film exhibition, production, distribution, aggregation, marketing, sales, and operations management. He has played a pivotal role in the global distribution of Nigerian blockbuster films, including the highest-grossing film in West Africa, “A Tribe Called Judah,” “Battle on Buka Street,” “Born Again Stripper (Ijakumo),” “Passport,” “Omo Ghetto: The Saga,” “The Wedding Party” films, “A Trip to Jamaica,” “King of Thieves,” and “King of Boys,” among others.

Joining Moses in the new venture are:

  • Biola Sokenu: as executive director and group COO, she brings a wealth of financial acumen and production experience. Before joining Nile Group, She led financial operations at Fleet River Productions Ltd, managing the production of Netflix’s “The Diplomat” Season 2. Her extensive background includes work on independent films and pivotal roles at global organisations such as AAA Entertainment, FilmOne Entertainment and the BBC.
  • Lolu Desalu: joins as executive director, leveraging 18 years of experience in business strategy, brand building and strategic partnerships. Lolu’s career spans roles at NPower, Incisive Media, TimeInc. London, and most recently as chief marketing officer at Filmhouse Group.

  • Abimbola Craig: takes on the role of VP of production. A lawyer-turned-filmmaker, she previously headed production at NdaniTV, where she co-produced hits like “Sugar Rush” and “Real Housewives of Lagos.” Her Netflix production “Glamour Girls” became the first Nigerian film to reach the global top 10 list.

  • Bukky George Taylor: joins as VP of Nile X, the luxury cinema arm. Bukky brings 17 years of strategic communications experience as the founder of Robert Taylor Media and co-founder of Crawl Africa, the first tourism app on the continent.

  • Nowekere Alexis C.I Segun-Ojo: joins the team as GM of distribution and marketing. With over 13 years in public relations and brand strategy, Nowekere, as general manager at Nile Entertainment, shaped and executed the company’s strategic vision, contributing to the success of West Africa’s highest-grossing cinema marketing team, and executing high-profile campaigns for local and international films.

Speaking on the new venture, Moses Babatope said, “Our vision for Nile Media Entertainment Group is to be the beacon of African storytelling, illuminating hearts and minds across the globe with captivating films that celebrate diversity, inspire empathy, normalise industry excellence and foster cultural exchange. Do you dream of an amazing career, one that keeps growing, keeps you satisfied, and lets you reach your full potential? For a lot of people, that dream remains a perpetual pursuit, leaving them wishing for a better tomorrow that seems never to arrive.

While many work hard to excel in their job roles, they often overlook the need for the same level of dedication when it comes to charting their career path. This oversight is a recipe for an unfulfilled career. In today’s rapidly changing world, simply working hard is no longer enough to succeed. Everyone now requires an arsenal of strategies to navigate their career effectively.

Let me share three proven career strategies drawn from product management. These are time-tested tactics that every professional can adopt to grow their career.

Build your career the agile way

People are usually advised to start with an entry-level job as the foundation for a successful career, then gradually ascend to managerial roles. This advice holds true for many, but it doesn’t account for the diverse circumstances that professionals encounter in today’s dynamic job market, especially if they aim for accelerated career growth.

A typical career now often involves horizontal navigations, upward moves, and at times, a willingness to temporarily take some steps down the professional ladder, which can involve accepting positions with lower job titles or salaries in a bid to explore more promising career paths.

This kind of adaptability is at the core of agile methodology commonly practiced by product managers. They understand that product development constraints are always complex and unstable. Hence, they employ an excellent approach of building products in short, iterative phases.  The goal is to create products that are flexible enough to meet the ever-changing market demands.

In your career as well, you should always position yourself to grasp great opportunities as they arise. This is a crucial point to note as you make career decisions or acquire new skills.

Career growth analyst, Marti Konstant, defines an agile career as “a self-reflective, incremental career path, guided by response to change, evolving job roles, and designed to optimise creativity, growth, and happiness.” Konstant further advises professionals to “lean into change and make adjustments to career status, rather than sticking to a rigid plan. Acclimate to economic developments and corporate adjustments by uncovering engaging projects.”

Use feedback as a growth catalyst

To accelerate your career growth, you must go beyond your official performance objectives and appraisals. Actively seek candid informal feedback from your colleagues regarding their perception of your performance and personality. This process will highlight your strengths and weaknesses and ultimately guide you on the competencies you need to focus on that will improve your job performance and enhance your chance for success in future endeavours.

“Be open to receiving feedback even if it is incorrect,” says Kiran Bondalapati, a technology leader and career advisor, “You are still getting data about how you are being perceived. Aggregate feedback and find common threads and unique viewpoints. Taking control of your career is too important to be left to your manager.”

You certainly need feedback from colleagues, friends, mentors, and even family members to continuously improve on critical growth areas that will catalyse your career.

Identify and manage your stakeholders

Just as a diligent product manager relies on effective stakeholder management for success, the same principle applies to career progression. The stakeholders in your career are as vital and multifaceted as those for typical products.

A career coach, Caroline Ceniza-Levine, describes them as “People who have a vested interest in the success of your career because it helps their career, because they happen to like you, or because what you do makes their job easier. These people will fight for you when plum assignments are given, when raises are decided, when restructuring means someone gets the short end of the stick.”

Beyond merely recognising your career stakeholders, you need a well-thought-out strategy to manage them. Understand the unique roles they play in your professional journey and identify the aspects of your career objectives that pertain to each stakeholder. This approach, as highlighted by organisational performance consultant, Jo McDermott, “requires you to think through all the players and come up with both an action plan and a communication plan for each. It will likely crystallise your thinking of the next steps and speed your career on its way.”

In all, regardless of your profession’s specific field, always treat your career as a valuable product that you need to manage diligently. This paradigm shift can propel your career growth to unprecedented heights.

Today’s guest on “Omon’s Couch” is Mary Akpobome, a banking veteran and the chief operating officer at Imperium Capital Partners. Mary shares her fascinating career journey, from studying theatre arts to becoming a leader in finance.

For Mary, banking was never her plan. Fresh out of university, she began her professional journey as a customer service intern at Citizens Bank during her youth service. Despite her background in theatre, her talent shone through. She attributed her secret to climbing the ranks to excellence in her role and a knack for building strong relationships. Mary explained how this led to her being entrusted with setting up customer service departments whenever the bank opened a new branch.

Mary’s journey didn’t stop there. She transitioned to marketing and steadily climbed the corporate ladder, eventually moving between different banks. In this conversation with Omon Odike, she also explained why role modelling is a powerful tool for young people.

Yewande Jinadu: How Can HR Professionals Protect Their Mental Health Better? https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/07/human-resource-professionals-protecting-mental-health/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 15:33:03 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1664658 I spoke with a therapist who asked me to define ‘rest’ and what that means to me. As someone who has not only faced various dilemmas but also coaches and mentors HR professionals through complex situations, I can affirm that HR professionals also face significant mental health challenges. While HR is traditionally expected to support other employees through their mental health struggles by partnering with professionals, it’s often overlooked that they also suffer from similar issues. Regrettably, there is no dedicated support system for HR professionals.

The challenge begins with the ambiguous responsibilities of HR professionals. Depending on the size and structure of a business, HR might find themselves handling procurement, administration, finance, operations, IT support, and more.

Recently, people shared the challenges they face this rainy season, highlighting the impact of the heavy downpour on their attendance and punctuality at work using the trend ‘Dear HR’. However, the truth is that such communication should not be directed at HR. Line managers are responsible for their team members’ attendance and punctuality. HR should be kept informed but should not be blamed for these issues. Here are some strategies HR professionals can use to protect their mental health:

Focus On What is Within Your Control

Organisations have various dynamics, and while HR professionals often treat the business as their own and wish for the best, it is crucial to avoid self-blame for aspects beyond their control. When it comes to employee satisfaction, if decision-makers do not approve of certain initiatives, do not tie your self-worth to the outcomes. This can prevent overthinking and unnecessary stress.

Try Your Best

Analyse what is within and outside your control, and strive to do your best with the elements you can influence. This reflection isn’t to justify yourself but to ensure you’ve given your all. This approach will help you sleep better at night, knowing you’ve put in maximum effort.

Seek Support

Don’t attempt to solve everything on your own. It’s okay to reach out to trusted HR professionals for advice. Realising that others have faced similar scenarios can be reassuring and provide valuable perspectives.

Maintain a Life Outside of Work

If work is your sole source of purpose and joy, your mental health will suffer when issues arise. Cultivate a fulfilling personal life where you feel loved and enjoy activities outside of work. This balance ensures that you have a strong foundation to weather any professional storm.

Engage with Professionals

Consider engaging with a coach, therapist, mentor, or counsellor. While friends can be supportive, the severity of certain issues may necessitate professional help. Therapy can address actual mental health conditions and past and present issues, coaching can guide your future progress, and a counsellor can provide advice on potential steps.

Practice Self-Care

Engage in activities that relax and rejuvenate you, such as exercise, hobbies, or meditation. Do what makes you feel good. Not long ago, I spoke with a therapist who asked me to define ‘rest’ and decide what it means to me. Now, any time I feel worn out, I ask myself, “what would rest mean to you at this point?” Then I allow myself rest to prevent burnout.

HR professionals must recognise the importance of their mental health and take proactive steps to protect it. Taking action towards mental well-being not only benefits you but also enhances your ability to support others, creating a healthier workplace for everyone.

]]>

As a career coach, I have witnessed numerous occasions where professionals are hesitant to actively make themselves visible at their workplace, fearing that they will be perceived as engaging in “eye service” or insincere flattery. Unfortunately, this lack of visibility often leads to career stagnation and prolonged frustration. Despite this, they choose to remain in their current positions to avoid being labelled as sycophants. There is a clear distinction between “eye service” and visibility concerning career advancement, and it is important to actively seek visibility in your career. You have to be empowered to take concrete steps towards sustainable growth in both your personal and professional life.

The first major difference is the quality of work. “Eye service” involves superficial effort aimed at being noticed, rather than making a genuine contribution or adding value. On the other hand, with visibility, genuine contributions and substantive work that adds value are seen. It’s not just about appearances; it’s about doing real work to be seen.

The second major difference is the consistency. “Eye service” places a short-term focus on immediate recognition, while visibility is focused on a long-term strategy that remains consistent. It involves building a gradual reputation based on consistent performance and reliability, rather than seeking immediate recognition.

The third major difference is authenticity. With eye service, actions and efforts do not reflect a person’s true capability and intention. There is a lack of competence and a constant need to adjust to fit into a certain mould. With visibility, actions reflect true skills, efforts, and values.

The unfortunate reality is that we often see impostors getting recognition because genuine individuals become uncertain of their abilities due to imposter syndrome. If I were your coach, the first step would be to encourage you to reflect on your work and past accomplishments. You should question whether you truly achieved them or if someone else did it for you. Why are you holding back just because you fear people’s perception of you?

If you are truly as capable as you claim to be, you should make a conscious effort to be more visible by delivering high-quality work. As the proverb goes, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well.” Don’t settle for average work; always give your best. Seek feedback regularly. If you are striving for continual growth, actively seek and use feedback to make improvements and demonstrate a willingness to learn. Take initiative by volunteering for challenging projects or leadership roles to stand out. Identify gaps and take action to fill them, showing your value. Instead of just discussing problems, take steps to solve them and take credit for your contributions. Lastly, effective communication is key. Keep your colleagues and superiors updated on your progress and achievements. Do not underestimate your efforts or results when showcasing your contributions.

If you’re at the beginning of your career or have already advanced, it’s never too late to take a moment to reflect. Stop thinking that you’re playing it small to avoid seeming like an overzealous employee. By purposefully seeking visibility and concentrating on making genuine contributions, you can establish a solid reputation, earn trust, and create opportunities for long-term success and fulfilment.

For nearly a hundred years, the Michelin Guide has been awarding stars to the world’s best chefs, but so far, only two Black women have received the honour and the second woman is Nigerian-born Adejoké Bakare. Earlier this year, she made history in the culinary world as the first black female Michelin-starred chef in the UK and the second globally

CBS Mornings’ “The Dish” visited Adejoké at her London restaurant, Chishuru, to savour her West African-inspired cuisines and ask her about her Michelin recognition and the deeper meaning of food for Adejoké.

“Food is not just sustenance for us. It can be a form of worship and care,” she explains. “If we say we love you, we don’t just verbalise it; we show it through our food.”

Regarding her Michelin star, Adejoké says, “It’s validation that West African food can be in the same class on the culinary stage as the French food.”

Sensational chef Hilda Baci and actress Idia Aisien not only made an impeccable fashion statement at the High Tea with BellaNaija Style, they also dropped amazing insights during their keynote session, moderated by BellaNaija‘s Chief of Staff/Head of Strategy Mary Edoro.

Hilda shared her thoughts on the importance of collaboration and why it is an effective tool to engage on one’s journey to success.

I practice collaboration in almost every aspect of my life. The cook-a-thon, one of the biggest things I am known for, was predominantly a woman-centric team. It was filled with amazing women and we didn’t just stop there, I have maintained that relationship and continued with it.

I will also speak about the importance of collaboration and the need to appreciate the people involved while at it because, in all honesty, you can’t do it alone. You should be okay with sharing the spotlight and giving credit where credit is due.

Also,  be willing to acknowledge the beautiful things that are done for you. These people may not necessarily be tied to your success, but they contributed to taking you to your success.

Looking back at the 20th Annual Conference of WIMBIZ that took place in 2021 at the Eko Hotels, I remember the keynote speech delivered by Atedo Peterside, the Founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, Anap Business Jets Limited, and Atedo N.A. Peterside Foundation. His speech on building a legacy had a significant impact on me as a professional. Mr. Peterside emphasised the importance of stepping out of one’s comfort zone to gain recognition and opportunities, whether through public speaking or writing. His message, particularly as someone in the public sector, deeply resonated with me and made me realise the pivotal role writing plays in career visibility and personal branding.

Reflecting on my recent conversations about the tangible results of my writing endeavours, I recognised the intrinsic value of this skill in shaping my brand and enhancing career visibility. A mentor recently asked me what encourages me to write, and my response was, “Writing empowers me to feel heard and offers a platform to influence perceptions positively.” As an inherently reserved individual, writing provides a medium through which I can express myself more authentically and thoughtfully, fostering self-awareness and introspection.

Why is writing important to a career professional?

Strategic Personal Branding

Writing serves as a potent tool for personal branding, amplifying one’s values, strengths, and passions to a broader audience. By articulating your thoughts and experiences, you attract like-minded individuals and opportunities aligned with your professional goals and aspirations. In a nutshell, your writing is often a reflection of who you are.

Enduring Legacy

Peterside’s insights underscored the enduring legacy that writing cultivates in one’s career journey. Whether as a policy analyst or in any other capacity, the written word forms a compendium of our experiences and contributions, shaping perceptions long after we have left the scene. Have you ever wondered why people write a memoir?

Authenticity

Whenever I write, I feel very vulnerable to the point that I’m sometimes in disbelief. This is because I find it easier to write about things that I’m less comfortable talking about. Writing allows me to be my most authentic self – it’s as if my thoughts flow directly from my heart to my keyboard, almost unfiltered. The vulnerability that comes with writing is what helps to build influence.

Meditation

I believe writing is one of the most trusted ways of meditating. As you write, you think, and as you think, you progressively meditate on these thoughts. Meditation has proven to help in analytical reasoning – one of the skills most sought after by employers. While the discipline of writing demands dedication and perseverance, its transformative potential in shaping career trajectories cannot be overstated. As you embark on your writing journey, may this reflection serve as a beacon of clarity, guiding you towards the visibility and success you aspire to achieve as a career professional.

I recently had a conversation with someone about the realities of building a career in HR. While we discussed the skill sets required, the conversation was more focused on the positive aspects. A career in HR can be highly fulfilling, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. The role is often glamorised, but the truth is that there are difficult moments that are rarely discussed. Let’s take a closer look at these realities and explore what they entail.

Untold reality

One of the stark realities of working in HR is your often misunderstood influence in decision-making. While you may be tasked with advocating for employees or implementing new policies, the final decisions typically rest with management. It can be frustrating to push for change only to see it fall by the wayside due to factors beyond your control. Employees tend to unnecessarily hate you for things beyond your control.

The rope of integrity

HR professionals frequently find themselves walking a tightrope between transparency and diplomacy. There are moments when you’ll need to navigate delicate situations, sometimes masking truths for the sake of maintaining harmony or protecting confidentiality. This can lead to internal conflicts as you question whether you’re truly upholding your integrity or merely appeasing others.

Confidentiality is not as easy as you think

Maintaining confidentiality is a cornerstone of the HR role, but it’s not always as straightforward as it seems. There will be instances where you’re privy to sensitive information or emotional situations, yet you’re required to keep a professional demeanour and refrain from sharing your thoughts or feelings. It can be emotionally taxing to hold onto these secrets, leading to a sense of isolation or burden especially if you do not have a solid support system.

Facing condescension

Despite the vital role HR plays within an organisation, there’s a persistent misconception that it’s a lesser career path. You may encounter scepticism or condescension from colleagues in other departments who question your abilities or intellect. It takes resilience to stand firm in your expertise and contributions, even in the face of unwarranted criticism.

Undermined support

HR is often viewed as a support function rather than a strategic partner, which can lead to feeling undervalued or overlooked. Your growth in a company where HR is not the main service offered will be slower than your colleagues who are seen as the ‘lifeline’ of the business. It is sad when people think HR is ‘easy’. Your efforts may be dismissed as secondary to the company’s core objectives. It’s essential to remind yourself of the invaluable role HR plays in shaping organisational culture and employee well-being.

Despite these challenges, it’s important to remember why you chose this career path in the first place. Whether it’s a passion for helping others, driving organisational change, or fostering a positive work environment, reconnecting with your purpose can help you navigate the low moments. Yes, there will be tough days where the realities of HR weigh heavily, but there will also be moments of success, connection, and growth that make it all worthwhile. By embracing both the highs and lows, you can cultivate resilience and continue making a meaningful impact in the lives of employees and the success of your organisation.

Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) Prize Competition, a philanthropic initiative sponsored by the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Philanthropy, hosted forty participants—of the top 10 Heroes, other finalists and partners from across Africa—in Hangzhou, China. Participants engaged in an immersive experience at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou and have returned to their home countries enriched with valuable insights to further enhance their entrepreneurial endeavours on the continent.

During their visit, the ABH Heroes (spanning cohorts from 2019 to 2023) participated in a wide range of activities. These included deep dives that explored various facets of the digital economy from cloud computing and AI-driven logistics to e-commerce villages. They participated in a series of workshops and site visits—all designed to elevate entrepreneurs to a higher level of success. The Heroes also exchanged knowledge and explored opportunities for collaboration with business leaders from Alibaba and with each other. These activities provided the participants with new knowledge and perspectives that they can potentially apply to overcome challenges, seize opportunities and scale their businesses.

Diarra Bousso, founder and creative director of Diarrablu and ABH 2020 top 10 Heros, expresses her gratitude for the experience of the trip to China. She states, “This trip was so inspiring in so many ways. First, meeting all these entrepreneurs who are the top entrepreneurs on the African continent and spending a week together was an incredible experience. And second: being immersed in the world of Alibaba and all the companies Jack Ma and his team built over time and understanding the vision behind it was like a dream come true.”

In another exciting development, ABH is extending its deadline for 2024 entries from May 19 to June 9 to accommodate more entrepreneurs eager to participate in the competition. Candidates selected for the top 50 will gain access to a host of resources, including training, mentorship and networking opportunities, as well as a supportive network of fellow African business leaders. US$1.5 million in grant funding will be distributed among the top 10 finalists; the first prize winner will receive an award of US$300,000.
