Chinasa T. Okolo, a computer scientist and Brookings Institution fellow has been honoured as one of TIME’s 100 most influential people in AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the second edition of TIME100 AI. This list aims to foster dialogue among leaders and share their insights with TIME’s global readership.

Chinasa was recognised for her efforts to address the risks posed by biased AI systems to communities in the Global South. Through policy advocacy, public speaking, and research, she is working to ensure that these communities are not left behind or exploited. Her work also highlights the potential benefits of AI for Africa, including flood detection and crop disease monitoring, while addressing its possible harms, such as digital harassment on microlending platforms.

TIME notes:

With so much AI development emerging from Silicon Valley, communities in the Global South risk getting left behind technologically, victimized by biased systems, or exploited for their data. Chinasa T. Okolo, a Nigerian-American computer scientist and a Brookings Institution fellow, is trying to mitigate those risks through policy advocacy, public speaking and releasing research papers. Okolo has recently contributed passages to the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI, led by Yoshua Bengio; the African Union’s strategy for responsible AI adoption; and Nigeria’s national AI strategy.

Through these endeavors and her own research, she is raising awareness about the benefits using AI could bring to countries across Africa—including detection of floods and crop diseases—as well as its potential harms, such as digitally-enabled harassment on microlending platforms. “I’m optimistic that AI could help fuel socioeconomic development that has been much needed in Africa for the last half-century,” she tells TIME. “But I’m also concerned that this competition could limit the autonomy of African countries and perpetuate neo-colonial practices that have negatively impacted their economies.”

Reflecting on her recognition, Chinasa says, “Receiving this recognition a year after earning my PhD and a year into my professional career is considerable motivation for me to continue my research and advocacy.”

Other notable figures featured in TIME100 AI include Mark Zuckerburg, CEO of Meta; Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI; Ray Kurzweil, Principal Researcher and AI Visionary at Google; and Marques Brownlee, YouTuber, among others. See the full list here.

Chadwick Boseman made an indelible mark with his most regal role in the first instalment of the Black Panther franchise. He didn’t just body the T’Challa role, he owned it. It is said that art imitates life, I could also argue that the reverse is valid. A great story is multi-layered; the Black Panther movie certainly captured many poignant themes and subplots. On this anniversary of Chadwick’s passing, I elected to interrogate his leadership signature especially juxtaposed against that of his arch nemesis, N’Jadaka (Erik Killmonger). I found these scenes look too much like real life, for real.

The Origin Story

The Black Panther movie starts with Prince N’Jobu acquiescing to the curiosity of his young son, N’Jadaka, by telling him a story about the founding of their homeland. N’Jobu was on a War Dog assignment in the United States of America and his son had seen enough to question the decision of Wakandans in the diaspora to live under deep shadow conditions constantly. Fast forward into the not-too-far future, N’Jobu is personally confronted by his elder brother, T’Chaka, who is also the King of Wakanda at the time over the treasonous charge of conniving with notorious criminal and black market arms dealer, Ulysses Klaue, to infiltrate Wakanda and steal a quarter ton of vibranium at the expense of innocent lives. After initially denying the charges, King T’Challa demands that N’Jobu’s associate Zuri, who goes by the alias, James, blow his cover by uniquely identifying himself through iridescent inner mouth markings as a Wakandan spy. In his fury, N’Jobu draws a gun at James but not before T’Chaka intercepts him and fatally pierces his own brother’s chest with five panther claws. The king tells James to keep the event a secret as they scurry from the crime scene in the royal talon. As they say in law enforcement circles, “the cover-up is always worse than the crime”. N’Jadaka comes into the apartment to meet his father’s lifeless body and unknown to anybody, a monster had just been born. He would become the proverbial chicken that comes home to roost in the future. The lesson here for leaders is to identify and engage discontent in its infancy; ignoring legitimate agitation is not a smart political strategy.

An Unholy Alliance

Aside from being a rogue mercenary, Klaue had a personal vendetta with Wakanda since a former Black Panther killed his grandfather. On his part, Prince N’Jobu is livid with Wakanda’s conservative foreign policy; he is not the biggest fan of the hiding-in-plain-sight strategy when in his words his people needed “the tools to fight back”. He was clearly disgruntled over how people who looked like him were being oppressed in the Western world. Side note: many aficionados in the Marvel Cinematic Universe argue that this was a brilliant play on history; a veiled reference to the Black Panther – a revolutionary organization with an ideology of Black Nationalism and armed self-defence especially against police brutality. Similar sentiments are also echoed by W’Kabi, the Chief Warrior of the Border tribe. Losing both parents to that assault on the homeland by Klaue provided added motivation to support the use of Wakanda’s weapons against foreign nations. Unfortunately, N’Jobu’s death didn’t stop N’Jadaka, his now grown-up and more sophisticated son who went by the moniker, Killmonger. Killmonger would link up with his father’s partner in crime to plan an encore incursion of Wakanda. Although Klaue would tragically return to Wakanda in a body bag the whole scenario underscores how much people who claim they are on a mission to right a perceived wrong end up committing more atrocities. The lesson here is for people to interrogate leaders who in their quest for power, don’t mind forging alliances with forces that are hostile to the homeland. The rise of Manchurian kings isn’t just fiction, it is more factual than you think.

No Friends, No Enemies – Only Interests

This sentiment drives the foreign policy of most leading nations on the planet; it’s nothing personal. CIA agent and former Deputy Task Force Commander for the Joint Counter Terrorist Centre, Everett Ross, is a very interesting character. Not just because he is a very charismatic and personable figure but more importantly, he is connected to the major actors in this saga. Previously, for handing over Zemo, who was responsible for the bombing that killed King T’Chaka, Ross gave T’Challa a diplomatic pass and kept the existence of his bullet-proof catsuit classified. However, Ross was in Busan to buy stolen vibranium from Klaue just as T’Challa was in Busan to capture Klaue and extradite him to Wakanda to answer for his crimes – two opposed missions. T’Challa told his team that he had just, “spotted an old friend who works for the CIA. It just got a little more complicated.” He was effectively telling them that although he and Ross had a cordial relationship, he knew Ross was at the casino to advance his own country’s strategic interests. How right he was because Ross tells his team moments later, “The King of Wakanda is here. He cannot leave with Klaue.” Finally, when Ross is revived at a Wakandan lab headed by Shuri, his interests begin to shift and this is evident by how he starts saying the quiet part out loud about Killmonger not being a Wakandan but known to the CIA as Erik Stevens who joined a JSOC ghost unit as a black operative, which goes off-grind and amongst many other things, “take down governments”. The lesson here for patriots is to understand better foreign policy not just of their nations but that of others, you may end up making different but mutually beneficial alliances – it’s nothing personal.

Criticism Doesn’t Equal Competence

Killmonger shows up in Wakanda with the body of Klaue; a gift that triggers a sense of ability on his part and justice for those who suffered loss from Klaue’s terrorism. W’Kabi is plugged into this opp because Killmonger does what neither T’Challa nor his father could do – bringing Klaue back to Wakanda. Could Killmonger fight like hell? Yes. Was he of royal blood? Yes. Was he the king that Wakanda needed? No. Killmonger’s words and actions support my sentiments after he challenged T’Challa to a ritual combat. Red flag: Killmonger says at the Council Chambers, “I want the throne!” Upon interrogation by the king, he regurgitates the worldview that his own father, N’Jadaka had instilled in him, “there are about two billion around the world that look like us; their lives are a lot harder – Wakanda has the tools to liberate them all”. T’Challa responds that Wakanda’s weapons won’t be used to wage war on the world because it wasn’t Wakanda’s foreign policy to be “judge, jury and executioner”. T’Challa further defends his conservative approach by stating that he wasn’t king of all people but King of Wakanda. There is a thin line between disruption and destruction; he may have been charismatic but very quickly, N’Jadaka showed his disdain for the rule of law and conventional wisdom that had steered Wakanda to stability and success. Once he became king, everything went south; notably burning the royal garden where the sacred heart-shaped herb was grown so that no other king after him would have access to them. N’Jadaka wanted the mantles of the king but failed to live up to the utmost responsibility of being the Protector of Wakanda. The lesson here is for us to be circumspective when demanding change and be careful what we ask because we might just get it.

Save Your Country or Serve Your Country?

A short but powerful scene captures a very instructive conversation between Nakia and Okoye; Nakia is a spy while Okoye is a soldier – this explains their perspectives on their loyalty to Wakanda and the emergence of Killmonger as king. Nakia submits that Killmonger is an illegitimate king who overthrew T’Challa, Okoye on the other hand insists that Killmonger was of royal blood and he defeated T’Challa in ritual combat. Nakia wants to start a revolution but she needs Okoye, Wakanda’s greatest warrior to lead the charge. Okoye rejects this idea of a revolution and opts for a resolution instead, insisting that she is “loyal to that throne no matter who sits on it”. She wants Nakia to serve her country but Nakia would rather save her country. However, once Killmonger sits on the throne, Okoye gets a front-row seat due to his warped thinking and his willingness to upend the socio-political order. The last straw for her and the Dora Milaje is when T’Challa makes a shocking appearance; effectively creating a constitutional crisis because the ritual combat is only decided after one person yields or is killed – T’Challa being alive immediately makes Killmonger’s position as king untenable. Of course, Killmonger believes the Challenge is over to which Okoye finally gets an epiphany and replies to him, “You’re not fit to be a king!” This is the conversation patriots need to have, the need to understand that patriotism is loyalty to the country, not the government or worse – any politician.

Baba? Nyana Wam!

In his first journey into the ancestral plane, T’Challa meets T’Chaka, dotes on him and seeks counsel on how to be a great king. Here, T’Challa comes as a son to meet the former king. However, on his second journey into the ancestral plane, T’Challa comes as a king to meet his father. There is a seismic shift in the tone of their conversation as a result of what Zuri told T’Challa over the dark secret of killing Prince N’Jobu and abandoning N’Jakada in America. Perhaps, back then T’Chaka couldn’t spill the tea on family matters to his young son because he was really trying to keep it PG. In his words, “he was the truth I chose to omit”. This is when T’Challa looks at his father whom he adores and tells him “You were wrong!” More importantly, T’Challa questions Wakanda’s erstwhile foreign policy as practised by the pantheon of past Black Panthers, “all of you were wrong to turn your backs on the rest of the world! We let the fear of our discovery stop us from doing what is right. No more!” This uncomfortable yet necessary conversation lays the groundwork, not only for T’Challa to recover the mantles of King and Black Panther but also to overhaul Wakanda’s foreign policy fundamentally.

This scene is very personal to me because it reminds me of my biological father, a traditional man who, fortunately, understood the assignment that he had to raise transitional children. As such tête-à-têtes are a signature of our relationship with which we discuss the differences in our generational perspectives. In Africa, there is much discouragement against questioning elders, especially by young people even when things are not working, it is seen in many quarters as disrespectful. I get it that young people can display exuberance in their correspondence so I don’t hold brief for everybody. Yet, T’Challa shows us that we can respect our elders and still tell them when they are wrong – those two truths can co-exist. Tradition is a wonderful thing until it stops progress.

T’Challa will always be in our hearts. Wakanda forever!

Guinness World Records has officially recognised 27-year-old Samson Ajao from Osogbo for his incredible achievement of reading aloud for 215 hours, earning the title for the “longest marathon reading aloud” and making it one of the longest marathon record attempts in GWR history. Samson read over 100 books on topics including finance, sales, management, leadership, politics, health, and mental wellness.

Samuel Ajao’s feat surpasses the previous record of 124 hours set in 2022 by Rysbai Isakov from Kyrgyzstan. To achieve this record, challengers must read aloud continuously from published works, with no more than a 30-second pause between items being read.

Witnessed by dignitaries such as Osun State House of Assembly Speaker Ngozi Adeleke and the Education Commissioner Dipo Eluwole, Samuel’s record-breaking feat is now part of the rich history of marathon reading records, which dates back to 1987. The previous record holders, including Adrian Hilton, Deepak Sharma Bajagain, and Rysbai Isakov, have all been surpassed by Samson’s remarkable effort.

Ajao undertook this challenge to promote literacy development and inspire a reading culture in Nigeria. According to GWR, “Not only is it the world’s longest marathon reading aloud, but it is one of the longest marathon record attempts in Guinness World Records history, surpassed in recent times only by DJ Faber Moreira’s 10-day DJ-ing marathon.”

In 2019, the September issue of British Vogue, curated by Meghan Markle in collaboration with editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, spotlighted women who were shifting the dial and making a positive impact globally. Among these influential women was Nigeria’s renowned author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Five years later, Vogue Magazine invited the 2019 cover stars to nominate their champions for 2024 and beyond. Partnering with brands like BMW, Nike, YouTube, and eBay, Vogue aimed to “shine a light on people who are changing the world and who devote their lives to others,” as Edward Enninful expressed. For this special feature, Chimamanda nominated Nigeria’s iconic actor, Ego Boyo.

Chimamanda described Ego Boyo as “an iconic figure since my teenage years, when she starred in the seminal 1990s Nigerian TV drama Checkmate. Her character challenged accepted norms of what women could be.” Beyond her work on-screen, Boyo is “actively involved in charity work focused on women – combating sexual violence against women and girls in Nigeria, highlighting women’s education and healthcare,” Chimamanda elaborated. “Today, she continues to be a role model for young Nigerian women – with her quiet glamour, her depth, and her dedication to producing quality work. An absolute class act.”

Reacting to the nomination, Ego Boyo expressed her gratitude:

I am deeply honored and humbled to be recognized as one of British Vogue’s ‘Forces for Change,’ nominated by the remarkable Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. As we continue to navigate and influence the ever-changing landscape of our world, I am reminded of the power of storytelling, advocacy, and quiet perseverance. My journey has been long, but each step has been meaningful and purposeful. This recognition fuels my commitment to contribute positively to the narratives we create, especially for future generations. My deepest thanks to Vogue and dearest Chimamanda for this acknowledgment.

In Rolling Stone’s Creators Special 2024, three Nigerian digital content creators Korty EO (Eniola Olanrewaju), Layi Wasabi (Isaac Olayiwola) and Taaooma (Maryam Apaokagi), are in the spotlight. Known for their relatable videos and culturally resonant humour, these creators are  celebrated for “keeping their Nigerian communities and culture front of mind — and finding success.”

Korty EO, a YouTuber, who has over 300,000 subscribers has interviewed music artists like Asa, Tems, Rema, and Nigerian footballer, Victor Osimhen, in her docuseries, “Flow With Korty.” She tells Rolling Stone that her “latest hobby is making money.” Korty is also host to another show, “Love or Lies,” where she sets singles up on blind dates.

Korty believes her work transcends borders while rooted in her Nigerian heritage.  “I can do that across the globe and it’ll connect with every single person,” Korty says. “But my roots still remain Nigerian.” Part of her motivation to widen her reach is to build more pathways for Nigerian creatives to tell stories of their communities. “We’re very industrious and ambitious people,” she says. “That’s the importance of collaborations with other people on other continents — it just brings more eyes to the beauty happening [here].”

Similarly, Layi Wasabi and Taaooma have made significant impacts beyond Nigeria’s borders. He recently collaborated with British-Congolese creator Benzo The1st and British-Nigerian actor Tolu Ogunmefun in London. Taaooma, known for her humorous portrayals of Nigerian family dynamics and gender roles, shares her aspiration for a Western audience while staying true to her roots. She reflects on her approach, saying, “There’s something that they say — if you want to win the whole world, at least win your community first,” she recalls. “When you stretch your hands out to other places, your community’s going to support you. So, that’s what I’ve tried to do.”

Serving a déjà vu of her global namesake hit track with Wizkid, Naija’s star girl Tems covers the latest fashion issue of ESSENCE.

The award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter, who just completed her Born in The Wild tour, looks every bit stunning in a golden satin headwrap, her face flawlessly glammed with her signature facebeat — straight 90s brow, cocoa-lined glossy lips, poppin’ eyes and a fabulously irresistible gaze — on the September/October issue.

You should be yourself even if something else is expected of you.

— Tems

She sits with fashion editor and the first black woman to style a Vogue cover, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, to discuss more than style and music. Tems unpacks staying true to herself while navigating the pressures of fame and building the life she wants.

You win, automatically, when you are yourself, no matter what that looks like. That’s why there’s variety. We’re different and are not all meant to be the same. And I know there’s a standard, but there shouldn’t be one.

There shouldn’t be a standard of what people should dress like if they’re artists, or what people should dress like if they’re women. I just feel like we’re all unique. There shouldn’t be a requirement. That’s what I mean by standard. There shouldn’t be a requirement or some kind of expectation that you dress a certain way.

I’m just a girl. I can’t wake up every morning thinking about what people expect of me. The better question is: What is it that I expect of myself? What is it that God expects of me? Why did I wake up, and why was I born into this world?

Let’s start there, rather than thinking about other human beings. Nobody has it figured out. You have to live your life in a way that is real.

— Tems

According to ESSENCE, “Karefa-Johnson’s groundbreaking role as the first Black woman to style a Vogue cover, paired with Tems’s rapid ascent in the music industry, highlights the unique challenges and triumphs that trailblazing women experience.

As the two share and connect on the specifics of their journeys, they reveal the resilience that propels Black and diasporic women forward, inspiring us to follow our own paths with similar courage and passion.”

I just want to know where that impulse to protect that identity came from. Ways in which you lean into showing up as a Nigerian woman. Ways in which that is successful in your fashion.

— Gabriella Karefa-Johnson

I feel like now, in the world, everybody wears many different things from different places. We’re not always wearing our traditional clothing that we’re used to wearing, from where we came from. But it doesn’t change who we are.

I’m always going to be Nigerian. You have to show up as who you really are, in your blood. I know my culture: I’m Yoruba. And I know—if I was to get married tomorrow, I know the attire that we’re all wearing as a family. And anything that has to do with representing Nigeria always needs to reflect that.

As a Nigerian, I feel emotional, which is what I think art should be. Art is emotion expressed.

— Tems

Heman Bekele’s journey from a curious young boy to TIME’s 2024 Kid of the Year began with a simple love of asking questions. “Before I can remember, I’ve always had such a huge love for knowing things around the world and being curious,” Heman told John Yang on PBS NewsHour. “That curiosity grew into my love and passion for science, and slowly, it progressed into creating this bar of soap.”

At just 15, Heman has spent the past year developing a groundbreaking bar of soap that could treat the early stages of skin cancer. His project won him the 2023 Young Scientist Challenge, a middle school science competition, that features outstanding innovations from young scientists that demonstrate the power of science to improve the world hosted by 3M and Discovery Education. This recognition came with a $25,000 prize, most of which Heman is reinvesting into his project, with the remainder supporting his education.

The soap, known as SCTS (Skin Cancer Treating Soap), is a compound-based formula infused with cancer-fighting chemicals. One key ingredient, Imidazoquinolines, is wrapped in a lipid-based nanoparticle. According to Heman, while the soap’s suds wash away, the medicinal components remain on the skin to continue their work. His goal wasn’t just to fight skin cancer but to create an accessible, affordable treatment for it.

This innovative approach to treating skin cancer—usually tackled through traditional methods or surgery—earned him the title of TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2024. “I’m really passionate about skin-cancer research,” Heman told TIME Magazine. “Whether it’s my own research or what’s happening in the field, it’s absolutely incredible to think that one day my bar of soap will be able to make a direct impact on somebody else’s life. That’s the reason I started this all in the first place.”

Born in Addis Ababa, Heman’s inspiration for the soap came from watching people work under the harsh sun. At the age of 4, he moved to the United States with his family, but those early memories stayed with him. Reflecting on his experience, Heman noted that while he didn’t think much of the sun’s impact as a child, moving to America made him realise how serious the problem of prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation is.

He recalls, “Growing up in Ethiopia, I always thought people were always getting hit by the hot sun working outside. I didn’t think much of it when I was really little, but as I grew up I realised how big of an issue [skin cancer] really is. Not only in Ethiopia but everywhere around the world.”

The staggering costs of skin cancer treatment further fueled his determination to find a solution: “And when [people] do end up getting skin cancer, it’s crazy expensive [to treat] and not affordable in the slightest. Skin cancer does have cures and skin cancer is treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally is almost $40,000. When I heard those really shocking statistics it really inspired me to create a more affordable and accessible solution… ”

Heman hopes to bring the SCTS to the market by 2028 and make skin cancer treatment affordable. To turn this vision into reality, he dedicates part of his weekdays to working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.

Watch Heman Bekele explain more details about the soap:

Malala Fund has appointed Nabila Aguele as its Chief Executive in Nigeria. A lawyer, public policy advisor, and advocate for gender equality, Nabila’s work centres on sustainable development, particularly in human capital and public financial management within the public sector.

A global citizen, Nabila grew up in Nigeria, England, Qatar, and Canada. She holds a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, a Juris Doctor from the American University Washington College of Law, and an MBA from INSEAD, where she was Valedictorian.

She has been instrumental in promoting gender-responsive fiscal policies and helped establish Nigeria’s gender-responsive budget. With nearly two decades of experience, Nabila will spearhead the Malala Fund’s mission to improve girls’ access to education across the country. Joining her on the leadership team is Gayatri Patel, who will take on the role of Chief of External Affairs.

“Our organisation is proud to celebrate a decade of impact this year — reflecting on learnings and using them to define our new strategy,“ says Lena Alfi, Chief Executive Officer at Malala Fund. “Welcoming Nabila and Gayatri to the team is a key step toward that future. These women are accomplished, innovative leaders and passionate advocates who are sure to strategically guide our team’s work to improve outcomes for girls’ access to education around the world.”

In her role, Nabila will oversee the organisation’s advocacy and grantmaking initiatives, with a focus on education policies and programs that target regions in Nigeria where girls face the greatest barriers to schooling. A lawyer and public policy expert with a deep commitment to gender equality, Nabila has long been involved in shaping policies aimed at creating sustainable social change. Previously, she served as Special Adviser to Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, where she advocated for gender-responsive fiscal policies and budgets.

“I am thrilled to join this team, connect with our partners and support the next generation of girls in Nigeria,” said Nabila. “To help girls learn, we are advocating for the creation and implementation of key education policies and supporting partner organisations working in states where girls face the greatest challenges to going to school.”

In an era where digital presence often defines our identity, photographer Reze Bonna and makeup artist Rachael Darné come together to present a thought-provoking conceptual series titled “A(m) (I)?.”

They invite viewers to reflect on the profound implications of our digital age, where the lines between authentic and artificial become increasingly blurred. By capturing the nuanced dynamics between the cybernetic and human models, Reze Bonna and Rachael Darné,  challenge viewers to consider the cost of technological integration on our sense of self and the future of human creativity.

The series begins with “Searching,” a visual where an android, holding a replica of her face, scans her surroundings. This image is a metaphor for the modern quest for self-identity amidst the overwhelming presence of digital constructs. The android’s detached yet searching gaze questions whether we are losing ourselves in our pursuit of digital perfection.

As the series unfolds, it dives deeper into the dynamics between humans and machines. In “User,” a human model strikes a pose reminiscent of a magazine cover, her every move observed by an android. This image encapsulates the allure and pressure of maintaining a meticulously curated digital persona.

The intensity heightens in “Data,” where the android cradles the human’s head, symbolising the intimate and sometimes invasive interactions between humans and technology. This visual metaphor speaks to the deep connection we now share with our algorithms, tailoring our digital experiences to fit our desires, often at the cost of our true selves.

Follower” takes a more unsettling turn, portraying a human model joyfully discarding her human face in favour of an android one. This act of surrender to digital identity reflects the growing trend of moulding our online personas to fit idealised standards, driven by the insatiable need for validation in a world where likes, shares, and followers often dictate worth.

In “Content,” the transformation reaches its peak. The human model stands alone, facing the camera, her face replaced entirely by an android’s. This image captures the moment of full assimilation into a digital identity, raising questions about the cost of this transformation on our genuine sense of self.

The final images, “Validate” and “Authenticate,” bring the series to a bittersweet close. In “Validate,” the android holds the discarded human face, a gesture that raises critical questions about the value of human identity within our increasingly digital world.

“Authenticate” then leaves viewers with an image of the android gazing directly into the camera, holding yet another android face, emphasising the endless cycle of seeking and defining identity through digital platforms.

Reflections

The series highlights concerns about generative AI’s growing influence in creative fields. The human model’s transformation into an android symbolises the potential overshadowing of authentic human creativity by artificial constructs. This metaphor captures the tension artists experience as they navigate AI’s impact on art, music, literature, and other forms of expression.

It also explores how social media affects personal identity, with the human model gradually adopting an android face, representing the pressure to conform to idealised, curated online personas. Titles like “User,” “Follower,” and “Content” emphasise the loss of genuine self-identity in favour of a digital facade.

Italy, a timeless canvas painted with centuries of art, history, and unparalleled elegance, from the cobblestone streets of Rome to the sun-kissed Amalfi Coast, this European gem has captivated the world for millennia; but what does its iconic backdrop hold for a modern, stylish couple like Tele Lawal and Elado Osuobeni?

Nothing beats a good Baecation: you and your lover exploring another country and making memorable footprints of your love. Partners, Tele Lawal and Elado Osuobeni decided to reward themselves with a trip to Italy as Elado got to work planning an interesting holiday to surprise Tele.

My partner and I work hard to support each other in our jobs and on our projects, so every now and then we like to reward ourselves. We chose Italy as our destination, and he went about planning the holiday to surprise me.

— Tele Lawal

Italy remains one of the world’s most visited travel destinations, which explains why many people have some knowledge of the country.

From the Roman Empire and its characters (Julius Caesar, Nero, etc.) to the Renaissance artists (Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, etc.), and the luxury fashion brands (Gucci, Fendi, Prada, etc.) there’s much to love about this fascinating destination.

Join us as we delve into Tele & Elado’s enchanting Italian escapade, where history met fashion and love met luxury:

Rome

Flying into Rome from London on a cool evening, the couple stayed at a modern apartment in the Prati district – a central district across the Tiber River and near the Vatican.

It’s a quiet and smart neighbourhood with lots of independent boutiques and traditional trattorias (informal restaurants) – central enough to be within walking distance of most of Rome’s sites, but residential enough to avoid the traditional tourist areas.

Tele Lawal in graphic full-sleeved maxi with interesting cut-out detail in Rome

Their Roman adventure included breakfast at a Ristorante overlooking Bernini’s Fountain of Four Rivers in Piazza Navona and visits to all the main tourist sites including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, the Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain.

Rome isn’t the most walkable city, but there are reasonable public transport links. Elado is into history, so it was fun watching him light up when we saw certain sites (like the spot Julius Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March).

After a day of Roman history, it was obvious to Tele & Elado that the next day should be one of Christian history. So, after an early rise, they headed from their apartment to Vatican City.

Vatican City

To Tele & Elado, the Vatican is the most iconic city in Christian history after Jerusalem, so visiting was a no-brainer for the couple. They said to BellaNaija Style:

Not many people know that Vatican City is its own state, and not only that but that it’s entirely contained within Rome. There is no recognisable border separating the Vatican from Rome – the only indication is a thick white line on the ground.

We walked up to St. Peter’s Basilica – for hundreds of years the largest church building in the world – weaving between drinks and souvenir stands. When we reached one of many entrances, we were greeted by tight security. After having our bags and bodies scanned, we entered the main square.

As it turned out, thousands of other people had got there before us, so the queue was very long. Our morning prayers must have been answered because I managed to speak to a security guard who helped us to the front of the queue.

To our amazement, the Pope himself came out of one of the doors and greeted some of us waiting near the front! It was a surreal moment and one that we will remember for a long time.

Once the Pope left, the front doors of St. Peter’s Basilica opened and we were allowed in. We were asked whether we would like to stay to have Latin Mass. I could worship with Elado and he could practise his Latin – a wonderful opportunity!

After the various hymns and prayers, we left the Basilica and wondered around Rome for some retail therapy before dinner at Soho House. That evening, we went back to our apartment suitably blessed and ready for the next stop on our Italian tour.

We had one last café breakfast in Rome before packing our bags and heading to the train station. As I mentioned, the whole trip was a surprise for me, so Elado refused to tell me our next destination until I spotted ‘Firenze’ on our train tickets. Florence all the way!

Tele Lawal rocking a chic knit dress in the couple’s Rome apartment, Soho House.

Florence

The 1h 30m train journey from Rome to Florence was beautiful. Italy’s high-speed trains are comfortable and often leave and arrive on time. Upon arrival in Florence, the couple were greeted by a torrential rain tagged “showers of blessing” by Tele who loved their temporary home in Florence best.

The apartment was my favourite of all of the ones we rented in Italy. All of them were modern and spacious, but this one had a certain charm that I can’t quite describe.

Too tired to do anything, Tele and Elado decided to skip sightseeing for a quiet dinner. Spoiled for choice from the long list of traditional Florentine restaurant recommendations from their lodge’s host and various friends, they had some steak and headed back to the apartment to rest.

The next day, after a café breakfast, the couple headed to the Uffizi Gallery to see some of the most iconic pieces of art assembled in Italy. They spent the morning walking through the gallery and soaking in the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Botticelli.

The day was packed so, Tele recommended that

If you ever want to visit, make sure to prepare yourself – there is far too much to see in one day!

While waiting to see the Medici Venus sculpture, the stylish couple were approached by two American photographers who asked them to model for a Love in Florence shoot they were planning.

Tele donned an iconic little black dress with a flattering sweetheart neckline and tulle details for the photo shoot. She paired the dress with a light coat, off-white shoes and a petals-detailed handbag in similar colours that coordinated nicely with Elado’s lovely blazer, pants, and shirt. Check out their photos below:

Love in Florence

It was such a fun time and the four of us had dinner and gelato afterwards!

The rest of our stay in Florence was marked by trips to the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Cathedral), Pitti Palace (the grand palace where the old rulers of Florence – the Medici family – lived and ruled), Boboli Gardens, and Giotto’s Campanile (a large bell tower by the cathedral).

Florence is a very walkable city – every major tourist site is within 20 minutes of the centre – but make sure to watch out for cars as the roads are very narrow.

Travel Tip from Tele

After dinner and late-night gelato, we went back to our apartment to rest for the next day. But nothing could have prepared me for the next surprise!

Tuscan Countryside

In the morning, I was told that we had a surprise activity. Elado was on his phone organising it for most of the morning and he refused to tell me where we were going.

We went to the town hall and waited until a lady pulled up in a black van. She didn’t know it was meant to be a surprise because she instantly asked whether we were there for the horse riding and wine tasting tour. Amazing!

They drove for half an hour out of Florence through the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside to a large wine estate, called Torre a Cona.

Tele Lawal & Elado Osuobeni coordinating in neutrals for a chic minimalist casual couple lewk in Tuscan Countryside

The hosting family was kind enough to give Tele and Elado a private tour on horseback.

After giving us our helmets, we followed them for two hours on our horses. Mine was hungry and unruly, Elado’s was strong and calm – I don’t want to say they matched our personalities!

Upon return to the main house, they dismounted and headed inside where a table of bread, cheese and wine was already prepared.

We tasted four different wines, all produced on the estate and they explained the history and mechanics of the wine production. It was lovely to see how much effort and care went into each bottle.

They jumped into the van at sunset and returned to Florence to rest before heading to their final stop.

After a good night’s sleep, we packed our bags and ordered a taxi to the train station. Once again, Elado refused to tell me our destination until I saw “Venezia” light up on the train’s information board. We were on our way to the Floating City!

Venice

Upon arrival in Venice, Tele & Elado noticed something that reminded them of home (Nigeria): mosquito netting on all windows. Venetian rivers and humid weather are perfect for mosquitos.

There were signs warning us of dengue fever, so we made sure to protect ourselves on the journey. Venice was our shortest stay in Italy, but a wonderful one.

It’s a touch of blue for the day. Partners, Tele Lawal & Elado Osuobeni look amazing at lunch in Venice

We saw the various tourist sites (Rialto Bridge, The Bridge of Sighs, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace), and feasted on traditional Venetian dishes (lots of seafood pastas). We even managed to see a Nigerian art exhibition – Naija no dey carry last!

However, for the couple, the highlight of Venice was a trip through the various canals on a traditional gondola. According to Tele:

It took us a lot of time to decide on which gondola to choose because I wanted the perfect setting. I finally found one that seemed to call out to me in one of the small side canals.

Our guide told us he was a fourth-generation gondolier – a family vocation started by his great-grandfather. He said the cushions were handmade by his grandmother and had been of sentimental value to him – no wonder I could feel the love when I first saw the gondola!

As we were gliding through the various canals, he told us about Venice’s history and the meaning behind every great building.

Thinking about the history of Italy in general (and Venice in particular) made me realise that Italy isn’t a conventional country – it’s an amalgamation of various city-states and kingdoms with their own histories who came together just over a hundred years ago to form something greater than their individual parts.

It gave us hope that Nigeria could be something greater than its individual parts too.

After a wonderful time in Venice (topped off with amazing smoothies) we headed to our apartment to rest and prepare for our flight back to London the next day.

More Italian Tourist Tips from Tele & Elado

When to visit

For Nigerians who don’t like the cold, summer from April to September will be the best time. However, this is peak tourist season, so be warned that everywhere will be busy. It will also be a lot more expensive. Out-of-season times (October to March) will be cooler but less busy and cheaper.

Where to stay

This will depend on your taste. For hotel lovers, there are many to choose from across the three cities we visited. Rome, Florence and Venice are expensive cities as they are global tourist destinations, so don’t expect high quality at cheap prices  – you get what you pay for!

We used Airbnb to find high-quality apartments in each city. Rome and Florence were much easier than Venice, though. The Floating City has fewer accommodation options (especially if you want modern interior design).

How to move around

Florence and Venice were very walkable cities, so if you don’t mind getting some exercise, you’ll be fine in those. Otherwise, Florence has taxis that can usher you around the various sites, and Venice has river taxis that can do the same.

Rome is larger and less walkable (unless you’re fit), so try the various public transport options – metro, buses, trams and urban rail. If not, good old taxis will take you to the historical sites.

How much should you budget?

It would depend on whether you’re going to one city, two, three or more. For Airbnb accommodation, you can expect anything from $200 to $500 per night for a small apartment. A budget hotel comes with setbacks anywhere from $200 to $400 per night, while $900+ per night for a luxury hotel.

If you want to eat on a budget, try the trattorias and osterias in each city (more informal than restaurants). These will generally be $30+ for a meal for two. Luxury restaurants will cost $200+ for a meal for two.

What to eat

You can get classic Italian dishes like pizzas and spaghetti Bolognese in every city. However, it’s often good to try traditional dishes in each city.

  • Rome is known for artichokes, pecorino (a type of cheese), zucchini pasta, and thin, crisp pizzas.
  • Florence is known for its thick steaks (Bistecca alla Fiorentina), Ribollita soup (white beans and vegetable soup), and tripe sauce (shaki in tomato sauce).
  • Venice is by the sea and is known for its various seafood pasta dishes and seafood pizzas – including a cuttlefish risotto (rice dish) dyed with black ink from the cuttlefish.

Why visit?

There is something for everyone in Italy:

  • If you’re interested in history and culture, the museums, palaces and ruins will satisfy you.
  • If you’re interested in food, Italians have hundreds of tasty traditional and regional dishes that will have you spoilt for choice.
  • If you’re interested in shopping, you’ll leave Italy with enough clothes to last you a lifetime (or at least a few weeks)!

All in all, Italy is a global tourist destination for a reason. There are many cities with different cultures and histories that will keep you coming back time and again. We’re already planning our next trip!

Would you visit Italy soon?

Letsile Tebogo has won Botswana’s first-ever Olympic gold medal, making history at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The 21-year-old sprinter triumphed in the men’s 200m final, clocking an impressive 19.46 seconds. Letsile’s victory saw him outpace American runners Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles, who finished in 19.62 and 19.70 seconds, respectively.

This remarkable achievement also crowns Letsile as the first African to win gold in the 200m sprint at the Olympics. Already known for setting a national record of 9.86 seconds in the 100m final, Letsile sped up in the last 50 metres of the 200m race. He crossed the finish line in 19.46 seconds, beating his chest in celebration as he became the fifth-fastest man in history over the 200m distance.

“It means a lot to the African continent because now they see Africa as a sprinting home, so we just had to make sure that the message is loud and clear,” said Letsile. “It was really a beautiful race for me,” he added.

His victory is particularly meaningful, as he had taken a month-long break from training following the death of his mother in May. In a heartfelt tribute, he celebrated his win wearing spikes inscribed with his late mother’s date of birth. “It’s basically me carrying her through every stride that I take inside the field,” Letsile explained.

The Board of Directors of Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) announces the appointment of Ugonna Achebe as the new Executive Director of JA Nigeria, effective July 1st, 2024. As JAN celebrates its 25th anniversary, Ugonna’s appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first alumnus to lead the organization. His return to JAN signals the start of an exciting new chapter, where his experience across various developmental sectors will be pivotal in enhancing JAN’s impact.

Ugonna started his journey with Junior Achievement Nigeria as a participant in the flagship Company Program during his secondary school years in 2007 and later joined the Venture in Management Program (ViMP) in 2017. Before ViMP, Ugonna volunteered for JAN starting in 2016; his leadership qualities quickly became evident, leading to his full-time engagement as the National Company Program Manager from 2018 to 2020.

As JAN commemorates its Silver Jubilee, Ugonna’s appointment as the Executive Director aligns with the organization’s strategic vision for the future. In his new role, he will provide the strategic direction and leadership needed to drive developmental growth and build on existing successes to further JAN’s mission and vision. He will lead the execution of JAN’s transformational programs, maintain existing partnerships, and explore new opportunities to further amplify the impact that JAN offers Nigerian youths.

I am thrilled to step into my new role at JAN, where I aim to build upon the impressive foundations laid by Simi Nwogugu and Foluso Gbadamosi. Their remarkable efforts have positioned JAN as a leader in cultivating financially savvy and entrepreneurial thinkers.

Drawing from my extensive experience within the JAN community and beyond, I plan to expand our reach and impact through strategic initiatives that utilize nationwide philanthropic support, grant management, and robust organizational leadership. With a focus on advocacy, strategic partnerships, and stakeholder engagement, my primary goal is to push JAN beyond its current limits,” shared Ugonna Achebe.

With a focus on leveraging technology, my objective is to build upon our current achievements by introducing targeted programs that address the challenges encountered by young individuals in Nigeria.

Aligned with JAN’s objective to impact one million students in the coming year, I am dedicated to devising innovative approaches and collaborations that empower youth with practical skills essential for the evolving landscape of work and entrepreneurship.

JA Nigeria’s Board Chairman, Niyi Yusuf, stated,

After a thorough selection process, Ugonna’s appointment as the Executive Director of Junior Achievement Nigeria is well-deserved. His remarkable experience in the development sector, along with his history as an alumnus, volunteer, and former National Program Manager of JA Nigeria, makes him exceptionally qualified.

Ugonna’s deep familiarity with JAN and his embodiment of our mission to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy are invaluable assets for the growth of our organization and the development of our youths.

Simi Nwogugu, CEO of JA Africa, and founding Executive Director for JA Nigeria, added,

I am delighted to welcome Ugonna back to JAN. We have celebrated many of our alumni leading several high-impact NGOs in Nigeria and finally have the opportunity to celebrate this full circle moment as Ugonna becomes the first alumni to hold the position of Executive Director at JAN.

It is fitting for Ugonna to be the person achieving this milestone because he has occupied all other stakeholder roles at JAN including teacher, volunteer, and staff, which gives him a unique perspective on what the organization needs to serve all stakeholders effectively. A remarkable way for us to celebrate 25 years of inspiring young people to achieve their dreams.

JA Africa Board Chairman, Charles Muyiwa Moyela stated,

On behalf of the JA Africa Board, I am thrilled to congratulate Ugonna Achebe on his appointment as the Executive Director of JA Nigeria. We are at a pivotal point in the growth of JA across Africa, and Nigeria’s significant population means it will play a crucial role in our continent’s expansion.

His deep understanding of the community, coupled with his strategic insights, will help amplify our efforts and scale our programs to benefit even more youth across the continent. We are confident that under his leadership, JA Nigeria will continue to be a cornerstone of our mission, fostering entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and work readiness among young people in Nigeria and beyond.

Ugonna holds a BSc in Industrial Chemistry from Covenant University and a Master’s degree in Education Leadership, Organization, and Entrepreneurship from Harvard University, focusing on Entrepreneurship and Artificial Intelligence in the Education Marketplace.

About JAN:
Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) is part of Junior Achievement Worldwide, one of the world’s oldest and largest nonprofit economic education organization operating in over 100 countries. They are dedicated to empowering students in financial literacy, work readiness, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy through experiential, hands-on programs.

The current Guinness World Record holder for the largest drawing by an individual is Ravi Soni from India with a drawing of 629.98 m² (6781.04 ft²). Twenty-six Nigerian students from the African Leadership University (ALU) were part of the largest graduating class ever, with 431 graduates from 30 African countries. The ceremony in Kigali, Rwanda, saw them receive Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees in Entrepreneurship, Global Challenges, and International Business and Trade, or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees in Computer Science. Notably, the graduating class included recipients of the ALU-Patoranking Scholarship Programme, sponsored by the Nigerian musician, Patoranking, to promote equitable education access for young African changemakers.

Present at the graduation ceremony were the president of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, the minister of education for Rwanda, Dr Gaspard Twagirayezu and the Mayor of Kigali City, Samuel Dusengiyumva.

The festivities began with Asante Sana Day, a Swahili term meaning “thank you very much.” This on-campus event celebrated the graduates and their support system: families, friends, ALU staff, and alumni. The following day, educators, politicians, and students’ guests assembled at ALU’s state-of-the-art campus in Kigali’s Innovation City for the graduation ceremony. It began with a welcome address by Veda Sunassee, CEO of ALU, followed by a keynote speech by ALU co-founder, Fred Swaniker.

Veda emphasised the importance of graduates in a world dominated by negativity. He called them “some of the most brilliant young minds” who will not only achieve personal goals but also serve their communities and bridge divides.

Fred focused on the skills employers seek today, like critical thinking, leadership, and data analysis. He highlighted that these skills, not just memorized facts, are crucial for success.

President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame received the ALU Honorary Certificate of Merit for his leadership in economic and social development, and his support of ALU. He emphasised Africa’s potential to solve its own problems and called for a shift from dependence on external solutions to ownership and responsibility. He congratulated the graduates and also praised ALU for nurturing critical thinkers and innovators on the continent. “This one-of-a-kind institution is a reminder to all of us that, in Africa, we have the means to solve our problems,” he said.

Computer Science graduate Millicent Malinga delivered an inspiring speech on behalf of the graduating class. The ceremony also featured the Unsung Leader Awards, presented by Elizabeth Tolu Ojo, Dean of ALU. These awards recognised individuals who dedicate themselves to supporting future African leaders.

Oreoluwa Ayanfe Ayo-Fisher, a graduate with a degree in International Business and Trade, expressed gratitude to ALU for its support in her journey to become a changemaker. She highlighted the valuable connections she made with people across Africa and the globe.

The celebrations concluded with ALU Homecoming Day, welcoming back alumni for festivities. ALU’s latest Impact Report revealed impressive results: over a quarter of alumni have started ventures, creating jobs and raising millions in funding.

His voice captivates you: a deep baritone, rich with experience and wisdom, instantly recognisable. It’s not just the voice; it’s also how he delivers his lines and embodies his characters that makes him so beloved and respected.

Olu Jacobs is a veteran Nigerian actor, a household name for generations who grew up watching movies on VHS and cassettes, or attending stage productions.

Born Oludotun Bayewu Jacobs (though known to all as Olu Jacobs), his passion for acting ignited after attending one of Herbert Ogunde’s annual concert parties in Kano. Though his parents hailed from Egba Alake in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Olu grew up in Kano where he received his early education. He later travelled to England to hone his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

Today, on his 82nd birthday, we celebrate his incredible career, which all began in the 1970s with appearances in British television series and international films like “The Goodies” (1971), “Till Death Us Do Part” (1974), “Barlow” (1975) “The Tomorrow People” (1978) and “The Dogs of War” (1980).

The United Kingdom recently had its general elections to elect a new prime minister president and members of Parliament to the House of Commons and the lower house of the Parliament. In a landslide, the opposition party led by Keir Starmer unseated the Conservative Party, led by Rishi Sunak of the Conservative Party, which had dominated British politics for fourteen years.

Six British politicians of Nigerian descent who contested for seats in the parliament won their elections, with some newly elected and the rest defending their seats for another tenure. Out of these six, five of them belong to the Labour Party and, one, the Conservative Party.

The elected MPs will serve their constituencies in the House of Commons for up to five years. Their journey begins on July 17th, 2024, with the State Opening of Parliament. During this ceremony, the King will deliver a speech outlining the government’s agenda for the upcoming session.

See the elected politicians of Nigerian descent below:

Chi Onwurah

Chi was born to a Nigerian father in 1965 in Wallsend and was taken back to Nigeria to live in Awka with her family when she was a baby. Two years later after the Biafran war broke out, she returned to Newcastle. She grew up on Hillsview Avenue in Kenton and attended Kenton School before studying electrical engineering in London.

Chi was re-elected as the Labour MP for Newcastle Central and West, with 11,060 votes out of 18,875.

In her speech upon being elected, she emphasised unity and collaboration, pledging to represent all constituents regardless of their voting choices, saying “I want to reach out my hand, and the hand of the Labour Party to all the people of Newcastle, no matter how you voted today. Our future as a community, as a nation, will be so much brighter together, in a spirit of consideration for each other.  My promise to you is to listen to you, to stand up for you, for our community, our values, and our future. Now is the time to come together for a better Newcastle. Our future is waiting for us. We can build it together.”

Bayo Alaba

Bayo is a Labour councillor with roots in the Forest Gate area of London and Nigeria. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in manufacturing and business from Coventry University in 1995 and later studied social politics at the London School of Economics in 2011.

A former parachute regiment soldier, school governor, and entrepreneur, Bayo became the first Labour MP for Southend East and Rochford. He expressed his gratitude to voters and volunteers, highlighting the collaborative effort behind his success.

Kemi Badenoch

Kemi is a British politician who served as Secretary of State for Business and Trade from 2023 to 2024, President of the Board of Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities from 2022 to 2024.

The Conservative Party MP for North West Essex (formally Saffron Walden) retained her seat with 19,360 votes. She commended her campaign team and vowed to represent the best interests of all constituents, continuing her role as a scrutinising legislator.

Taiwo Owatemi

Born in 1992, Taiwo has been a Labour Party Member of Parliament for Coventry North West since 2019 and served as the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities from September 2021 to September 2022.

Defending her Coventry North West seat with a landslide victory (with 19,696 votes), Taiwo expressed deep gratitude to voters, “Words cannot express my gratitude to the people of Coventry North West. Your trust in me, in our shared vision, for a brighter future, is truly humbling.”

A pharmacist by profession, she pledged to continue her tireless work amplifying the voices of her constituents.

Florence Dauta Eshalomi

Florence graduated with a BA Hons in Political and International Studies with Law from Middlesex University and started her working life as a 16-year-old at Sainsbury’s supermarket. She has worked in a variety of campaigning and public affairs roles including in local government as a policy officer, and as a regional organiser for the Labour Party during the 2005 general election.

A Member of the Labour and Co-operative parties, Florence was a Member of the London Assembly (AM) for Lambeth and Southwark from 2016 to 2021. Transitioning from the abolished Vauxhall seat, Florence secured victory in the newly created Vauxhall and Camberwell Green constituency

She praised voters for their trust and enthusiasm for working together. “Thank you to residents across Vauxhall and Camberwell Green for putting your trust in me.  I am honoured to be re-elected for the new constituency and I look forward to working alongside all of you.” Florence says

Kate Osamor

Kate is a British Labour politician who served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Edmonton from 2015 until the seat’s abolition in 2024. She was Shadow Secretary of State for International Development from 2016 to 2018. She is a member of the Socialist Campaign Group parliamentary caucus.

He talked about how relocating abroad wasn’t on the horizon for him or his wife. They were established in Nigeria and content with their lives there, that the idea of seeking greener pastures abroad wasn’t a factor.

Despite their initial contentment in Nigeria, Holy Mallam eventually relocated his family to Dallas. However, this wasn’t part of the original plan. 2024 has definitely been wild. Not gonna lie, the opps nearly had me in the first half. Even my bank account dey whine me but I no panic; I still maintain maximum composure. Amidst all the madness, an inspirational quote from the recently crowned “King of Steeze” at the colourful Ojude Oba ceremony, Farooq Oreagba, helped me put my thinking in perspective – “As long as you’re in the game, you can win the game.”

The Critical Third

Time is a leveller. Although many thought leaders have come up with plausible arguments on how successful people leverage others to increase their allotment of time, the fundamental truth is that everyone gets twenty-four hours to do whatever. Hypothetically, your day should be divided into three key parts: The social third – the amount of time you spend with family, friends and other informal relationships or leisure activities. The restful third – the amount of time you spend sleeping, recharging and relaxing your body. The critical third – the amount of time you invest in engaging your talents in the marketplace, service to humanity or fulfilling your purpose. These three blocks of eight hours are in no way set in stone as they easily overlap in reality but they give an insight as to how you should deploy your time and manage yourself.

My emphasis is the critical third – this means that most of what you become is largely determined by this block without disrespect to the other two. The first thing you were designed to be is fruitful (productive). It’s the secret of successful persons, businesses and countries. When you see first world country institute a system where workers are paid per hour, it’s intentional because they know the gross domestic product is simply the aggregate of individual productivity. You see them fix roads, security, electricity supply and public transportation, invest in education and technology, incentivize innovation by establishing patents et al – all to encourage productivity. Companies in those climes give huge bonuses, stock options and other fringe perks to staff members that are highly productive. However, before you talk about being fruitful, you must first be seedful. What do you have that the world needs?

Parallel Lines: Great Leadership and People-Pleasing

Leadership is about influence and impact; you cannot lead effectively without serving people. However, there is a difference between being of service and being subservient. In a bid to become more empathetic to others, many leaders fall into the trap of overcompensating. You see them give the people what they want instead of what they need all the name of vox populi, vox dei. Populist-styled leadership could get you votes or sell products but won’t build you a legacy. If it gets you through the door, you need to switch up and eventually clean house. Leadership sometimes requires you going against the grain, not necessarily becoming anti-people but realizing that the possibility exists that the majority could be wrong. It’s easy to be a people-pleaser when you don’t know your onions, lack a healthy self-esteem, pandering to too many divergent interests or don’t have a vision. Great leaders only change plans where necessary but never the overarching goal.

The Answer To Your Prayers Doesn’t Always Look Like It

Perspective is everything. When you ask God for a table, he will answer you by pointing you towards a tree because God is not in the furniture business. If you pray for an oak tree and you don’t recognize that the acorn is your answer, you will miss your blessings because God usually gives you things in seed or potential form. For example, if you pray for $1,000,000 – what God will give you is a million-dollar idea, not cash. If you don’t work it, it will not work. The people who made the most money from the pandemic were business persons who weren’t necessarily medically-inclined. They just saw the huge market for N5 masks and other supplies. Opportunities always come disguised as opposition and opportunities are seen with the mind, not the eyes. If David thought he would seat on the throne without confronting Goliath – who looked like a giant but was really a gate to unlocking his next level – make e dey play. He had better go and get his five stones and start taking shots at that uncircumcised Philistine. My friend and tech bro, Evans Akanno, once said something so profound that I DM-ed him right away and blatantly said I would steal it, “What you want is on the other side of the work you are unwilling to do”.

Epignosis

Job was a very complicated character, many speakers and writers seldom use his story for anecdotes – others cherry-pick bits and pieces of his submissions for their references. Who would blame them? One could almost conclude that the guy was bipolar but then again, that’s what trauma does to a person – science tells us that trauma literally changes how the brain works. Job would go from saying profound things like “Naked I came from my mother’s womb and naked shall I return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” To the other extreme, “Let the day perish wherein I was born and the night in which it was said, There is a man-child conceived.” He was a man who lost all ten children in one day, all his servants to marauders, all his livestock which formed a great part of his wealth and got struck with an incurable sickness. Before things went south, he was the GOAT and if correctly extrapolated, his wealth in today’s terms could have seen him top Forbes’ Billionaire List – few people if any at all, had an experiential reference point for the scale of his loss.

I would find words from Job’s much younger friend, Elihu, which helped me answer the question back in the day when people asked where I got the inspo whenever I wrote or spoke, “There is a spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding.” Yet, somewhere within his rantings, rhetoric and retorts, Job said something equally thought-provoking that underpins my original point, “What you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you.” This is seminal. Notice, Job didn’t say, “What you have (materially), I also have”. As much as he didn’t have an aversion for owning property, he didn’t define himself strictly by those terms. Even when he lost everything, Job still knew who he was. One wise person put it this way, “money is what you have in the bank but wealth is what you have in your heart”.

What makes you inferior to another person isn’t the car you aren’t driving, the house you aren’t living in or the designer clothes you aren’t wearing – it’s really what you don’t know. I have said a thousand times before, without education and critical thinking – a person is effectively subhuman. One of the key differences between first-world countries and third-world countries is their literacy rates. In fact, this forms one of three components of HDI. This is why I will forever loath feudalistic leadership with all of my being because one of their principal signature is the weaponization of poverty and illiteracy – both of which affects how you think. Any leader that attacks education via commission or omission is setting you up as a collective to be inferior to other countries. Neo-colonialism na your mate?

In the first installment of the Iron Man franchise, after being kidnapped by terrorists and whisked away to a cave in the middle of a desert with the help of his father’s devious business partner, Obadiah, Tony Stark experiences for the first time what it means to live without access to his high-tech suit. At the end of movie, he learns that he is not the suit by telling a room full of press people, “I am Iron Man!” If your huge social media following is taken from you, would you still consider yourself an influencer? If your political position is taken or stolen from you, would you still consider yourself a leader? If you somehow don’t get married, would you still consider yourself fulfilled in life? Indeed, a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of things he owns.

You have got to love Paul of Tarsus, e get him own for body but on a norms the guy dey yarn solid. He was very particular about knowing. For example, he would write some profound things and conclude by saying, “that you might know”. What if I told you that Jesus didn’t really heal that woman who was bent-over? When he said, “Woman, thou are loose!” He merely told her the state of her sound health that she was oblivious to and she accordingly responded to the new information. The Greek word for it is epignosis – “exact or full knowledge, discernment and recognition.” Sinach was right when she sang, “I Know Who I Am!”

Lydia Charles Moyo, founder & executive director of Her Initiative

The King Baudouin Foundation has awarded the 2023-2024 Africa Prize to Her Initiative, in recognition of its work to unlock women’s economic potential, tackle the youth unemployment crisis and accelerate economic and social development in sub-Saharan Africa.

Established in 1976, on the 25th anniversary of King Baudouin’s reign, the King Baudouin Foundation’s mission is to contribute to a better society in Belgium, Europe and the world. It is an actor for change and innovation, serving the public interest and increasing social cohesion. It seeks to maximise its impact by improving skills in organisations and for individuals

Tanzania has made significant progress on women’s empowerment and women’s rights. Yet, 60% of women still live in poverty and many don’t have access to the resources they need to shape their future and participate in economic development. As a youth-first and women-led organisation, Her Initiative offers a range of innovative and holistic programmes which equip young women with the education, skills and resources needed to enter the job market or run their businesses. Notably, Her Initiative aims to remove persisting barriers by leveraging the power of technology to advance digital inclusion among young women and girls.

Its Panda Digital platform uses SMS technology to deliver learning courses in Swahili to young women with limited internet access, and its Digimali project helps young entrepreneurs scale up their businesses online. Since its foundation in 2019, Her Initiative has reached over 15,000 young women and girls through its programmes, including supporting over 200 women to launch a business through Panda on the Ground and enabling 2,805 more to digitalise an existing business.

To support the next phase of its development in Tanzania and beyond, the KBF Africa Prize will provide Her Initiative with 200,000 euros (over 560 million Tanzanian shillings), as well as the opportunity to connect with the King Baudouin Foundation’s international network of non-profit organisations and development professionals. With this support, Her Initiative aims to expand its programmes in Tanzania and across East Africa to reach 100,000 more women over the next five years. It will also use the funds to bring together an ecosystem of youth organisations to facilitate knowledge sharing, share resources, and harness the power of African youth.

Lydia Charles Moyo, founder and executive director of Her Initiative, comments: “Gender-based violence, underage marriage and HIV are just a few examples of the problems that are stopping women from going to school, getting a job and breaking the cycle of poverty. My friends and I experienced these barriers when we were in high school, and so started to look for solutions to the challenges we were coming up against. And that’s how Her Initiative started. We already support young women to build their financial resilience in six Tanzanian regions, but with the KBF Africa Prize we will be able to scale our work to help so many more women to achieve their dreams in Tanzania and beyond.”

The 2023-2024 Africa Prize will be presented to Her Initiative at an awards ceremony today at the Royal Palace of Laeken in Brussels. The organisation was selected from a pool of more than 400 applicants by an independent committee of 12 international experts, including past winners of the KBF Africa Prize.

Chair of the KBF Africa Prize Selection Committee 2023-2024, Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, says: “The selection committee was highly impressed with Her Initiative’s combined approach to advancing women’s rights and financial independence. Coupled with its innovative use of modern technologies and strategic local partnerships, Her Initiative is a highly deserving recipient of this year’s KBF Africa Prize. We look forward to seeing what the team achieves in the years to come.”

The KBF Africa Prize recognises African organisations working to drive African-led solutions to the challenges facing the continent and to sustainably improve the lives of Africans. The Prize plays a transformative role in helping organisations scale up and advocate for their work on a wider stage. Several past laureates, including Denis Mukwege, Elman Peace and Grameen Bank, have since been awarded and shortlisted for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Chidinma Modupe Okafor has more than doubled the world record for the longest crocheting marathon with a time of 72 hours. During the marathon, she created a white dinner gown and broke the previous record of 34 hr 7 min set by Alessandra Hayden (USA) in 2021.

Chidinma, who has been crocheting since childhood, described her attempt as driven by a lifelong passion for the craft and a desire to push her physical and mental boundaries. “I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” she said.

Crocheting involves creating textiles or clothing by using a hook to interlock loops of yarn or wool. To set the new record, Chidinma had to crochet non-stop, transitioning seamlessly from one ball of yarn to the next. As per the rules, she was allowed a total of two hours of rest per day, which she used for eating, sleeping, and other necessities.

“My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning,” Chidinma revealed. “It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue. Additionally, logistics such as arranging for sufficient yarn with support staff were crucial for the uninterrupted progress of the attempt.”

Initially aiming to crochet a wedding gown, Chidinma adapted her goal to a dinner gown as fatigue set in. She drew inspiration from Hilda Baci, who last year set the record for the world’s longest cooking marathon.

Chidinma’s achievement follows a trend of Nigerians breaking world records, joining the ranks of Helen Williams (longest wig and widest wig), Ewa Cole (longest marathon singing Christmas songs), Clara Chizoba Kronborg (longest interviewing marathon), and Tonye Solomon (most steps climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on the head).

Clad in a flamboyant green and yellow Asooke Agbada, he rode majestically on horseback, a photo of which went viral and earned him the title “King of Steeze.”

An investment banker by profession, Farooq Oreagba is a seasoned Ojude Oba participant. In an interview with Arise News, he says he’s been attending the festival for fifteen years, carrying on a family tradition that dates back to his grandfather, who also rode in the festival.

Beyond the festival’s glitz, Farroq offered a glimpse into his personal life. He discussed the meaning behind his tattoos and how his battle with cancer, diagnosed in 2014, reshaped his perspective.

“From the moment I was diagnosed with an incurable form of cancer in 2014,” Farooq reflected, “my priorities changed because I didn’t know how long I would be around. But hopefully, since I have been crowned King of Steeze at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival, I won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.”

History is about to unfold as the 2024 Osun-Osogbo Festival sets its sights on a Guinness World Record with the most traditional dances performed in a single row.

From the 29th of July to the 9th of August 2024, at the Osogbo Township Stadium, Osun State will showcase its cultural richness through 40 traditional dances in a single show. The pinnacle of this grand endeavour culminates on the 30th of July 2024.

“Through this record attempt, the state aims to inspire their community and shine a spotlight on Nigeria’s rich cultural tapestry,” says a festival representative.

The Osun-Osogbo festival is a fourteen-day event held in August of each year. It culminates in a massive procession from the Ataoja’s (the town’s King) palace to the main Osun Shrine, where rituals with the sacred objects carried by the Arugba (the votary maid) are conducted. It is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and tradition—a true reflection of the soul of Osun State.

Esther Kimani, a computer programmer from Kenya, has won the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering’s Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation. Her groundbreaking early crop pest and disease detection device wowed the judges, thanks to its remarkable ability to swiftly detect and identify agricultural pests and diseases. This innovative tool can reduce crop losses for smallholder farmers by up to 30% and boost yields by as much as 40%.

In Kenya alone, millions of small-scale farmers (around five million) lose a staggering third (33%) of their crops due to pests and diseases.

Esther’s invention tackles this head-on. It provides real-time alerts within seconds of an infestation, along with specific recommendations for intervention. But that’s not all! This innovative device also notifies government agricultural officials about pest or disease outbreaks, enabling broader efforts to manage these challenges across the agricultural sector.

Harnessing the power of solar energy, the device employs computer vision algorithms and advanced machine learning to detect and identify crop pests, pathogens, or diseases, and the nature of the infection or infestation. Farmers receive notifications via SMS, making this an affordable alternative to traditional detection methods at just $3 per month—significantly cheaper than hiring drones or agricultural inspectors.

To further develop her innovation, Esther was awarded KSh 8.3 million (£50,000) the largest amount ever given to a winner in honour of the Africa Prize’s 10th anniversary. Reflecting on her win, Esther shared, “My parents would lose up to 40% of their crops each farming season, which affected our standard of living. We are empowering smallholder farmers, many of whom are women, to increase their income. We aim to scale to one million farmers in the next five years.”

The three runners up who were each awarded KSh 2.5 million to develop their innovations, were:

Eco Tiles, Kevin Maina, Kenya:

  • An environmentally friendly roofing material made from recycled plastic. Stronger and lighter than clay or concrete tiles, the innovation is a dual solution to plastic pollution and high building costs.
  • The innovative manufacturing process involves a custom-made extrusion machine that blends different plastics at varying temperatures, eliminating the need for energy-intensive processes like kiln-burning and reducing carbon emissions. The tiles are enhanced with UV stabilisation chemicals and construction sand to improve durability and sturdiness.

La Ruche Health, Rory Assandey, Côte d’Ivoire:

  • La Ruche Health connects communities to vital health information, advice, and services through “Kiko”, an AI chatbot tool available on WhatsApp and mobile apps, and a digital backend solution to streamline documentation, billing, and data sharing for practitioners.
  • By May 2024, the AI has facilitated over 150,000 user interactions and 189 in-home and teleconsultation appointments, processing over $18,000 in medical billings, illustrating its effectiveness and scalability.

Yo-Waste, Martin Tumusiime, Uganda

  • Addressing Uganda’s mounting waste crisis, Yo-Waste is a location-based mobile application that connects homes and businesses to independent agents for efficient on-demand rubbish collection and disposal.
  • Yo-Waste currently serves over 1,500 customers including homes, businesses, and waste collection agents, with a goal to reach 20,000 users by 2026.

The remaining innovations shortlisted for the 2024 Africa Prize were:

Beba-Beggie, Charles Oduk, Kenya – An IoT automated locker technology offering affordable, accessible, secure and convenient short-term storage.

Biomass Briquettes, Ludo Ntshiwa, Botswana – An environmentally-friendly clean fuel that harnesses the green energy of biowaste to produce a renewable energy source for heat production as a substitute for charcoal.

Kiri EV, Christopher Maara, Kenya – An end-to-end affordable and clean energy mobility provider, from electric motorcycles, scooters and tuktuks to battery charging infrastructure across Kenya.

MAVUNOLAB Solar Dryer, Dr Evodius Rutta, Tanzania – A low-cost solar-powered dryer developed to help small-scale fish processors and farmers in off-grid locations by enhancing food safety and hygiene for perishable food products.

Microfuse Stick Computer, Ivan Karugaba, Uganda – A compact and affordable device that plugs into any screen, projector or monitor to transform it into a Wi-Fi-connected computer, increasing computer access and digital inclusivity.

Myco-Substitutes, Abubakari Zarouk Imoro, Ghana – An eco-friendly sewage treatment that uses viruses, bacteria, and fungi to treat and feed on faecal waste and produce yarn and leather substitutes.

PenKeep, Adaeze Akpagbula, Nigeria – A climate-smart remote sensing device that monitors and controls environmental conditions in poultry farms, ensuring optimal health and productivity of chickens.

Second-Life Batteries, Léandre Berwa, Rwanda – A solution that repurposes retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries to be assembled as a backup power supply for telecom towers and mini electricity grids.

The Kitchen Box, Tunde Adeyemi, Nigeria – An affordable biogas digester technology that turns organic waste into animal feed and organic fertiliser and generates clean energy for heating and cooking.

The annual Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, established by the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014, champions innovators who develop sustainable and scalable engineering solutions to local challenges in Africa.

For nearly a hundred years, the Michelin Guide has been awarding stars to the world’s best chefs, but so far, only two Black women have received the honour and the second woman is Nigerian-born Adejoké Bakare. Earlier this year, she made history in the culinary world as the first black female Michelin-starred chef in the UK and the second globally

CBS Mornings’ “The Dish” visited Adejoké at her London restaurant, Chishuru, to savour her West African-inspired cuisines and ask her about her Michelin recognition and the deeper meaning of food for Adejoké.

“Food is not just sustenance for us. It can be a form of worship and care,” she explains. “If we say we love you, we don’t just verbalise it; we show it through our food.”

Regarding her Michelin star, Adejoké says, “It’s validation that West African food can be in the same class on the culinary stage as the French food.”
