James Earl Jones, the iconic American actor whose unmistakable voice brought to life characters like Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King,” has passed away at the age of 93. The news of his death at his home in Dutchess County, New York, was confirmed on Monday morning, September 9.

Born on January 17, 1931, James was a shy child who struggled with a speech impediment. In high school, an English teacher helped him overcome his stutter by teaching him how to sound out words carefully and encouraging him to read aloud in class. After high school, he initially attended the University of Michigan to study medicine, but soon found his true passion in drama and changed his major. After completing his service as an Army Ranger, he moved to New York to pursue an acting career.

James’ deep baritone voice and commanding stage presence quickly made him a standout. He made his Broadway debut in the late 1950s in “Sunrise at Campobello.” Over the years, his resonant voice became iconic, breathing life into beloved animated characters such as Mufasa in Disney’s “The Lion King” (1994), its sequel in 1998, and the 2019 remake. He also voiced characters in films like “Robots” (2005) and “Jack and the Beanstalk” (2009). His final role was in 2021’s “Coming 2 America,’ where he reprised his role as King Jaffe Joffer from the 1988 comedy classic “Coming to America.”

In addition to his film roles, James lent his voice to various documentaries, including “Malcolm X” (1972) and “Earth” (2007). He also famously voiced the tagline, “This is CNN,” which still plays during commercial breaks on the network.

He achieved the rare EGOT honour, with an asterisk. He won two Emmy Awards, a Grammy, and two Tony Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2017. In 2011, he received an honorary Oscar.

James Earl Jones was first married to actress-singer Julienne Marie, and his second wife, actress Cecilia Hart, passed away in 2016 after 34 years of marriage. He is survived by his son, Flynn Earl Jones.

The 2024 Creative Arts Emmys kicked off with a spectacular night of awards, setting the stage for a weekend of celebration on television. Held annually the weekend before the Primetime Emmys, the two-day event shines a spotlight on technical and artistic excellence, with a staggering 99 awards given across various categories.

On Saturday, the honours focused on variety programming, nonfiction, and reality shows. Among the standout winners were “Saturday Night Live,” Angela Bassett, and Alan Cumming, with the ceremony taking place at Los Angeles’ iconic Peacock Theater.

Presenters over the two nights included an eclectic mix of talent, from Olympian B-Boy Victor Montalvo to comedians like Mike Birbiglia, Nikki Glaser, and Tig Notaro, as well as stars like Lucy Liu, Jane Lynch, Fisher Stevens, and Hannah Waddingham.

Angela Bassett had a shining moment as she accepted her first-ever Emmy after nine nominations, winning for her narration of National Geographic’s docuseries “Queens.” “This feels good, really, really good,” she shared in her acceptance speech. “Thank you to National Geographic, Wild Star Film, and the women directors —all women—who brought this incredible story, this incredible docuseries centered on the ferocious and magnificent things in the animal kingdom. I couldn’t be more thrilled and more grateful.”

The ceremony continues today, with more awards presented this evening, and will conclude next Sunday, September 15, with the final 25 awards at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live on ABC at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by Eugene and Dan Levy.

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has revealed the nominees for the 18th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs18), set to air on October 26th. These awards aim to recognise and celebrate the creativity, quality, and excellence of South African film and television talent while promoting industry growth, entrepreneurship, and the development of emerging talent.

This year, the SAFTAs introduced five exciting new categories, including Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Special Effects in Hair and Makeup, and Best Original Song for a Telenovela, TV Drama, or Feature Film.

Leading the pack with a staggering 29 nominations is Tshedza Pictures, known for its hit productions such as “The River,” “Giyani,” and “Legacy SA.” The highly anticipated show “Outlaws,” directed by Tebogo Malope, earned 11 nominations, matching the acclaim of “The River.”

Right behind them, Burnt Onion Productions snagged 22 nominations for projects like “Miseducation,” while The Bomb Shelter Film Company garnered 20 nominations, with 17 nods going to the breakout hit “Shaka iLembe,” including a Best Actress nomination for Nomzamo Mbatha.

In an impressive personal achievement, Thembinkosi Mthembu leads individual nominations with four for his performances in “The River,” “Adulting,” “Shaka iLembe,” and “Outlaws.” Meanwhile, the return of the Animation category adds a fresh dynamic to this year’s ceremony.

Additionally, posthumous nominations were awarded to Mpho Sebeng and Connie Chiume, honouring their contributions to South African cinema.

Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is set to launch a new storytelling podcast titled “Mind Your Own.” This ten-part series explores the lives of Africans in the diaspora, all centred around the thought-provoking question: Where is Home? Through narratives from Africans across the globe, the podcast navigates what it means to belong, offering insights into identity and connection from an African perspective.

Born in Mexico, raised in Kenya, and having spent the last 20 years in the U.S., Lupita explains that her homesickness inspired the creation of this podcast. She seeks to explore the experiences of fellow Africans who, like her, straddle multiple worlds they call home. “Mind Your Own” will feature personal stories from Lupita’s journey, alongside intimate conversations with others finding their way in cities like Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Toronto, and Kampala.

Women have always been at the heart of economic activity, a truth that endures through generations. Today, with greater access to information and a global push for financial independence, women are boldly claiming their economic power. From driving economic growth as entrepreneurs to influencing policy and leading businesses, women’s financial autonomy is reshaping communities and economies worldwide. Figures like Ngozi OkonjoIweala, the first female Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, exemplify how economic leadership can inspire and transform societies.

With money comes freedom, authority, influence, power, and independence. In the film “Adire,” when Asari decides she’s had enough of her pimp, Captain, who sees her as nothing more than a commodity, it’s her financial independence that enables her to break free, reinvent herself as Adire, and start a successful business. “Adire” illustrates how economic power allows one to reclaim one’s identity and shape one’s future.

“Adire” is not alone in highlighting this theme. Here are five more films that explore how women harness their financial strength to rewrite their stories and drive societal change:

“King of Boys”

In “King of Boys,” Eniola Salami is one of Nollywood’s most formidable female characters. As a wealthy businesswoman with a complex past, Eniola leverages her financial resources to navigate the political landscape and assert her influence in a male-dominated world. Her economic power grants her the ability to make strategic moves, eliminate threats, and maintain control over her empire, defying traditional gender roles and showcasing how wealth can be a powerful tool for success.

Lionheart

As the executive director of her family’s bus company, Adaeze is well-versed in the company’s finances and operations. When her father falls ill, her initial expectation to take over is dashed when her uncle is appointed instead.

Nevertheless, Adaeze’s financial prowess shines through. She successfully negotiates key investments that keep the company afloat amid a financial crisis. She prevents a potential takeover when she secures essential contracts that boost the company’s revenue and expertly manages the complexities of debt restructuring. Adaeze became the lifeblood of the company

To imagine a Lionheart, where Adaeze is without any economic power would be to imagine a Lionheart transport company that failed.

Wives on Strike 2

In “Wives on Strike 2,” domestic violence is portrayed as a severe issue exacerbated by the victims’ lack of economic power. When a woman is murdered by her husband, her friends come together, using their limited resources to seek justice. They hire a vigilante to extract a confession from the perpetrator, stepping in where traditional systems fall short.

Studies show that increasing a woman’s economic power can reduce her risk of violence, as financial independence lessens her dependence on abusive partners. Without economic power, many women feel trapped in or return to abusive relationships.

The women’s collective action and advocacy for systemic change demonstrate how economic power can drive social justice and political activism. The film also highlights the support provided by the deceased woman’s friend, who takes in her daughter and helps her find her voice.

Breaded Life

A bread seller, Todowedo manages her small business by purchasing bread from the bakery and selling it throughout the day. This independent venture allows her to support herself, covering her rent and personal expenses without relying on local bigwigs like Jobe or the bakery owner, Jugunu, who have made advances toward her. Her financial self-sufficiency is evident in her ability to help others, such as accommodating Sunmi when he is stranded and introducing him to the bakery owner for employment opportunities. In Breaded Life, we see Todowede’s economic autonomy through her resilience and capacity to support and uplift others within her community.

Citation

In “Citation,” we shift our focus to Ibukun Awosika, who plays herself in the film. In a panel hearing, when Professor N’Dyare attempts to undermine a young female panel member by flaunting his academic credentials, Ibukun counters by listing her own impressive qualifications, which far exceed his. Her extensive credentials ensure that the professor cannot intimidate her, allowing the panel to proceed with their investigation and deliver appropriate justice.

Her assertive leadership in the panel challenges the professor’s arrogance and demonstrates how her professional stature and economic success empower her to uphold justice and authority in the face of misconduct.

All the movies mentioned—”Adire,” “King of Boys,” “Lionheart,” “Breaded Life,” and “Citation”—are available to stream on Netflix, while “Wives on Strike 2,” can be found on Prime Video.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Segilola Ogidan takes us through her inspiring career journey, from her directorial debut to her AMVCA nomination, and more.

In our previous feature, we caught up with Uzor Arukwe, who talked to us about his acting journey, Hollywood premiere experience and his role in the recent film “What About Us?.If you missed it, catch up here.

Segilola Ogidan has brought life to diverse characters—Tonye in “The Men’s Club,” Ajike in “A Naija Christmas,” and Jumoke in “Over The Bridge,”—each showcasing her versatility as an actor. A media arts graduate from Royal Holloway, University of London, Segilola has remained unwaveringly authentic throughout her journey.

While many actors find their passion for the craft later in life, Segilola knew from childhood that she was destined for the stage. She grew up watching Dorothy Dandridge films, imagining herself in the roles Dorothy played.

Today, Segilola is not only an accomplished actor but also a director and writer. Though she wears these multiple hats with grace, acting is where her heart truly lies. Her role in “Over The Bridge” earned her a Best Lead Actress nomination at this year’s AMVCAs, solidifying her status as a leading lady in Nollywood and an emerging star on the international stage.

When she’s not on set or actively mummying her two energetic boys, you’ll find Segilola absorbed in a good book. If she weren’t in the film industry, she dreams of living in Mougins, a picturesque village in the South of France, where she’d run a cozy café, Lola’s Café, offering delightful coffee, baked goodies, and beautiful art.

In our conversation, Segilola reflects on her experiences as a writer, actor, and director, shares her thoughts on the evolving landscape of Nollywood, and offers a hint about her upcoming project—a Wole Soyinka biopic.

***

Hi Segilola, it’s super nice to have you on BellaNaija’s Meet the Star. How are you doing?

Hi BellaNaija! I’m very well thank you, thanks for having me.

When you’re not on set, either acting or directing, what do you love to do in your free time?

I’m a wife and a mum of two wonderful boys who keep me very busy and on my toes! When I’m not actively “Mummying.” which is hardly ever, I’m completely lost in a book! I LOVE to read.

You’ve made a name for yourself as a writer, director, and actor—out of these three roles, which one brings you the most fulfilment and joy?

I would say acting. It’s really not easy walking in someone else’s shoes and making millions of people believe you’re that character. So when I get the opportunity to sink my teeth into complex roles that are far from who I am, and I succeed in execution, it fills me with such fulfilment and joy.

You have a B.A. in Media Arts and a Master’s degree in Cinema Studies. Did you always know you wanted to be an actor?

Oh yes! Since I was a little girl! I used to watch Dorothy Dandridge movies and imagined I was the one playing the roles she played. Another thing I did and still do is I would create scenarios and act them out in front of the mirror. My family members (including my children) find it so odd when they catch me doing it!

Let’s talk about “Tainted Canvas,” your directorial debut. What was it like stepping behind the camera and bringing your creative vision to life?

So before “Tainted Canvas,” I had been behind the camera in producer roles. I had also directed a couple of short films, so it wasn’t new to me. However the intensity of the script, it’s quite an emotional drama, as well as shooting in Nigeria was a whole new and exhilarating experience. Also, the amount of time it took for principal photography as a director was a whole new experience and my, was it draining, because as a director, your brain is literally in overdrive, with NO BREAKS! When I act, I only come in on my scheduled days, so I have breaks, however, when I direct, I’m involved right from inception. I think the intensity was further exacerbated because I also WROTE the script! Lol. So literally from the very beginning to the very end, I was heavily involved.

“Over The Bridge” was a success, with multiple nominations and awards including Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography at the AMVCAs. How did it feel to be part of such an acclaimed film?

First of all, let me just say that I was on cloud 9 when I got my Best Lead Actress nomination for the film!!! Ok, that’s out of the way (lol), being part of “Over The Bridge” was definitely orchestrated by God and it’s so telling because of the huge success of this beautifully emotive and nuanced film. Also, I would say that the film has done well to seal my place as a leading lady in Nollywood as well as an actor to watch out for in the international space.

What’s one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

That I’m a fantastic cook and I’m a great baker. I be throwing it down in the kitchen!

If someone hasn’t seen any of your films yet, which one would you recommend they start with, and why?

I would suggest starting with “A Naija Christmas” simply because it’s fun, light-hearted and Christmassy! I mean, who doesn’t love a good Christmas movie? I know I do.

As a filmmaker, what’s your take on the direction Nollywood is heading in?

Are there any changes in storytelling or production that you’d like to see? Nollywood is an enigma! One minute I think the direction it’s taking is clear and the next minute, it completely switches and one goes back to being confused by it. One thing I would say is that I am happy about the constantly improving production quality and the fact that filmmakers are taking elements like the story and performances more seriously. The industry is definitely on an upward trajectory and more people in the international space are taking more of our productions more seriously. So it’s looking positive all around. Also, I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing more female Directors killing it!!

If you weren’t involved in acting or filmmaking, what other career do you think you’d be pursuing?

Oh, I would totally own a Café and an art gallery! My retirement plan is to own a Café in Mougins (a stunning quiet village in the South of France) where I sell amazing coffee (I’m a coffee connoisseur) and my baked goodies and beautiful art (some that I’ve painted as well as acquired during my travels). You come in, have great coffee and pastries, relax and buy art. It’ll be called Lola’s Café. Can you tell I’ve thought about this? Lol!

Finally, out of all the amazing projects you’ve worked on, which one has been the most rewarding for you, and why does it hold that special place?

It has to be “Over The Bridge.” I went through some deep life changes during the shoot and I grew a lot as a woman, a creative, a mum, a wife and as an actor. It marks my evolution and ascension into the next level and phase of my life where I find I’m in a much happier and more secure place.

Thank you so much for chatting with us, Segilola! We’re excited to see what’s next for you.

Thank you so much for having me! Such an honour. I’m super excited for you to see my next film too…a hint…it’s the Wole Soyinka Biopic.

Social media is abuzz with anticipation following the release of the captivating trailer for Inkblot Production’s highly anticipated film “When Love Strikes.”

The movie, set to debut in cinemas on September 13th, is already being hailed by film critics as an inspiring and hard-hitting story, marking Nigeria’s first foray into the world of football-themed cinema.

‘When Love Strikes’ was produced in association with Get Reel Production owned Breath of Life actor  Eku Edewor and features a star-studded cast led by AMVCA-winning actor Osas Ighodaro and rising talent Natse Jemide, best known for his role in the Netflix hit series Far From Home.

It also features stand-out performances from an ensemble cast, including Bimbo Akintola, Zubby Michael, Sunshine Rosman, Jimmie Akinsola, Vine Olugu, Chuks Joseph, Demola Adedoyin, Taye Arimoro, and Suo Chapele.

The electrifying trailer, which unveils breathtaking snippets from the movie ahead of its much-awaited cinematic release, follows a teaser that sent Nigerian moviedom into fever-pitch anticipation.

The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), the co-director of the record-breaking A Tribe Called Judah, and boasts a heavy-weight production crew alongside Inkblot co-founders Chinaza Onuzo, Zulumoke Oyibo and Damola Ademola, who also serve as Executive Producers.

When Love Strikes was co-written by Chinaza Onuzo and Joy Bewaji, the acclaimed screenwriter of A Weekend To Forget, from a story by Damola Ademola, Eku Edewor, and Bewaji herself. The film was shot in Lagos and Ikenne in Ogun State with support and sponsorship from Remo Stars FC, Bet9ja, and Pepsi

Inkblot co-founder Damola Ademola has hinted that people should prepare for an unforgettable experience when it debuts in cinemas across Nigeria on September 13.

“‘When Love Strikes’ is a film that explores the universal appeal of football and the true meaning of ‘the beautiful game’ through the eyes of a gifted young player. This story is very close to my heart, and it was important that we celebrated football and what it means to the Nigerian audience while telling a story full of heart.

We are so pleased with the work done by Degzy and the entire cast and crew, and we are confident that this film will resonate deeply with audiences of all ages, everywhere.” Ademola added.

Filmmaker Eyo Emmanuel with Richmond Amechi, brings a compelling family drama to life in the upcoming film “Broken Portrait.” This emotional narrative unpacks the impact of drug addiction on a family’s fragile bonds, shedding light on the hidden struggles and resilience of those affected.

Written and directed by Eyo, and co-produced by Richmond, the story follows newly engaged couple Ivie Idahosa (31) and Bassey Enobong (33) as they prepare for a weekend visit to Ivie’s family. Despite her initial reservations, Ivie agrees to take Bassey home, unaware of the tensions that will unfold. The calm quickly turns to turmoil with the arrival of Ivie’s younger brother, Osaze, fresh out of rehab. As secrets surface—revealing Osaze’s struggles with sobriety—the family must come together to support him in his fight for recovery.

According to Eyo, “The vision of the film is to show the devastating effect of drug addiction on the family unit.” The film offers a fresh perspective, often overlooked, on the burden families bear when a loved one faces addiction.

The cast includes Teni Aladese, Ngozi Nwosu, Taye Arimoro, Gbubemi Ejeye, Floyd Igbo, and Eniola Jordan. The first looks offer a glimpse into the emotional depth and tension that will grip audiences as the family faces heartbreak and hope.

In “Supacell,” a group of five ordinary Black individuals unexpectedly gain superpowers, each connected by a shared history of sickle cell. While the series dives into themes like casual racism, healthcare bias, and gender inequality, it also shines a spotlight on sickle cell anaemia, a condition deeply affecting Black communities. But there’s more beneath the surface—viewers who appreciate the nuances of friendship will notice the unspoken bromance, as Michael Salami calls it, between Michael (Tosin Cole) and Gabriel (played by Michael Salami).

Michael and Gabriel are two inseparable friends, navigating life together as close friends do—hanging out in Gabriel’s bar, having deep conversations, and enjoying each other’s company. But everything changes when Michael suddenly becomes a superhuman capable of travelling through space and time. How did Gabriel handle this dramatic shift in their dynamic? We get the scoop straight from Michael Salami in an engaging chat.

Born in America and raised in London, Michael Salami’s acting journey began with a role in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” (2005). Now an award-winning actor and a graduate of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in NYC, Michael has left his mark in productions like “Supacell,” “Hollyoaks” and “Sumotherhood.” Last year, in November, he won ‘Best Actor’ at The British Short Film Awards for the short film “Saving Art.” Michael’s versatility extends to the stage, with performances at prestigious venues such as The Old Vic and The Soho Theatre.

We had the chance to talk with Michael about his role in the sci-fi series  “Supacell,” how he feels being part of a chart-topping show, the friendship between Michael and Gabriel, his Nigerian heritage, and his future plans.

How I feel today…

“I’m having a great day and I’m glad to be here. Thank you for having me.”

The thrill of being on a chart-topping Netflix show is…

“an incredible honour and privilege. Being part of a show that touches on incredible subjects and resonates with everyone across the world in 80 plus countries, reaching number one, is beyond exciting. So I just feel honoured and excited. It’s really a privilege, honestly.”

Gabriel’s response to Michael’s transformation and the strength of their friendship…

“..is something I find interesting because people often ask me, ‘Would you really do that in real life? Would you keep your friend’s secret?’ And my answer is, yes, I would. Tosin and I were able to establish a great friendship and bromance that resonated with our characters, who have known each other since primary school and have been friends for many years. If you’re a true friend, you’d want to keep your friend’s secret. I still have close friends today, and I’ve kept their secrets. So I believe the way Gabriel kept Michael’s secret was portrayed honestly and realistically. In the beginning, you want to console your friend, as seen in the scene where I was reassuring him, saying maybe it’s not happening. But once Gabriel realised it was real, he accepted it, saying, ‘Okay, you weren’t lying. Let’s keep this a secret. But how are we going to solve your issues, my brother?’ I think it was portrayed very honestly.”

On a scale of 1-10, the intensity behind the scenes of the film was…

“…maybe a five. It didn’t feel that intense because the producers, directors, and Rapman really mastered creating a comfortable environment. Everyone on set felt like family. We were all there with a mission, working hard to give our best to the show. We put everything into it, and thankfully, it resonated with audiences, becoming number one in the world. We’re really grateful for that.”

The most memorable scene to film was…

“…with Tosin Cole, who played Michael, the main character. The scene where he first comes over and tells me about his superpowers was a standout for me. I’m trying to reassure him, saying, ‘Maybe that’s not the case. You’re going to be all right, bro. I’ll be at your wedding. Everything’s going to be fine.’ But my absolute favourite moment to film was when he first appears in the bar, and I’m like, ‘What the…?’ He just jumps out of nowhere. Every time I see that, it makes me laugh because it was such a fun day to shoot. You never really know how it’s going to look because, obviously, in real life, he didn’t actually jump from one place to another. But when we saw it on screen, it really worked.”

The significance of “Supacell” in raising awareness about Sickle Cell and the Black community…

“…is that it represents us and depicts things that I think most people aren’t familiar with, like Sickle Cell. If you walk into a room and ask who knows about Sickle Cell, you’d probably get a very low percentage of people who do. I’m fortunate enough to know more about it because I have friends who go through it, so I have more knowledge than a lot of people.

It feels like an honour to be part of a production that highlights something that predominantly affects the Black community. I love the awareness it brings to everyone. And with a predominantly Black cast, both on-screen and behind the scenes, it feels right; it feels great. But I think “Supacell” is for everyone. Everyone can resonate with it, and that’s evident through the numbers and how it’s gone worldwide.

I love that it resonated with the whole world and that people can see the little nuances of the Black experience. But it’s not just thrown in your face, like, ‘look at us,’ you know what I mean? It’s very much about everyday lives. And yeah, I think Rapman did a great job with the writing.”

If I could have any of the superpowers from the film, I’d choose …

Sabrina’s superpower, Telekinesis, because it’s incredibly versatile. She can essentially do everything—move herself from one place to another, almost like flying, and even stop things in their tracks. For example, if a bullet is coming, she can redirect it. I also love the idea of moving things with my mind. Imagine sitting down and painting without even touching the brush—just watching it move on its own. That would be pretty cool.”

Even though I was born in America and raised in London, I’ve managed to maintain a strong connection to my Nigerian heritage.

“thanks to my mom, my grandma, my aunties, and my uncles. When I first came to the UK, I didn’t understand Yoruba at all. I was still young, so I didn’t really get it. But thank God for my aunties—they made it compulsory for me to learn it. Every time they came to my house, or I went to theirs, they spoke Yoruba to their children and to me. I remember one time they asked me in Yoruba if I had taken a shower, but I thought they were telling me to turn off the light. So I went to turn off the light, and they were like, ‘No, you do it!’ I was so confused! But as the years went on, they would come up to me and ask the same thing, ‘Do you know it yet?’ Now, I can understand about 98% of it. I love being Nigerian—it’s one of my superpowers, if you will.”

What I find most interesting and exciting about Nigerian culture…

“It’s how we’re just incredibly funny. Our banter is unmatched. I also love the food and how we come together as a village, as a family. There’s this saying, ‘Nigerian never carry last,’ and it’s true—we never come in last. I love that about us. And another thing is our respect—how much we value and respect our elders and loved ones. It’s something we take seriously, and it’s so important. I really love that about our culture.”

The Nigerian dish and song that always hit the spot for me…

“It’s got to be the number one dish in the world—Jollof rice. And I love Ayamase too; it’s my thing. In fact, I’m even planning to cook some today. As for the song, it would be Burna Boy’s ‘Last Last.’ The year that song came out was one of the best years of my life. It was the same year we were shooting ‘Supacell.’ I remember after we finished filming, I went to Thailand, and we played that song every day. ‘We don’t ask, last last, everybody don chop breakfast.’ It’s a really good memory for me.”

It is no news that Disney has partnered with Balmain for a capsule collection tagged The Lion King to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the beloved namesake classic. In a recent Vogue interview, Oliver Rousteing, the creative director at Balmain revealed how deeply he drew from his African heritage as he spoke about the inspiration for the new collection.

When I watched The Lion King as a child, the message I saw was: choose your own destiny. Thirty (30) years ago, there wouldn’t be a collaboration [like this] with a Black designer because the reality in the French luxury world back then was that that person didn’t exist [within that world].

– Olivier explained.

He mentioned that the vision for the collection was clear to him from the beginning

The most important aspect of The Lion King is its origins, and that’s Africa.

Although born and raised in France, Olivier’s biological parents come from Ethiopia and Somalia–information he learned while filming his documentary, Wonder Boy (2019). In that sense, he likens himself to Mufasa, the focal character of Disney’s upcoming Live Action film Mufasa: The Lion King, due to be released in December 2024.

In the new movie, we learn that Mufasa is an orphaned cub who rises up to become the king of the Pride Lands. I also have come from nowhere; I came from an orphanage and didn’t know my origin. I had to create my own kingdom, so the story resonates a lot for me.

The epic children’s animated series “Iyanu The Series” now has a theme song for its world premiere, performed by the Grammy award-winning singer Yemi Alade. This theme song will feature in the opening title sequence when the series premieres next year on Cartoon Network and Max.

“Iyanu The Series” is an adaptation of Dark Horse Comics/YouNeek Studios’ graphic novel series Iyanu: Child of Wonder by creator and filmmaker Roye Okupe. The series, steeped in Nigerian culture and mythology, is a Lion Forge Entertainment production with the backing of Cartoon Network and Max.

The main title theme song is a collaboration between Yemi Alade, Lion Forge Entertainment, Alcon Sleeping Giant, and Femi Agunbiade, the lead composer of the series.

“I’ve been a big fan of Yemi Alade for over a decade, so I nearly fell out of my chair when I heard she would be a part of Iyanu,” says Roye. “I’ve gone from blasting her hit single Johnny in my car in 2014 to listening to her stunning lyrics on the Iyanu theme song. This is an absolute dream come true!”

“Iyanu” is set to launch in the U.S. and across Africa in 2025. U.S. viewers can watch the series on Cartoon Network and Max, while it will be available in 44 African countries via Showmax.

Have you ever wondered what Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti (FRK) would wear today? Look to Nigerian fashion artist and model, Tejiri Duke, for all the cues you need as she reimagined the African matriarch for a chic red carpet look that’s attracted applause from Gen-Z to the aged.

Jiri, as she’s fondly called, slayed the popular Iro, Buba, and Ipele look from FRK’s famous picture in a sculpting dress with a side slit and shoulder piece, perfectly mimicking FRK for the Lagos-premiere of the namesake biopic by Bolanle Austen-Peters.

Turning heads and making history, Jiri’s FRK-inspired look was an impressive artistic move at the premiere, a true testament to her style and brilliance featuring a meticulously crafted tube dress with interesting stripe detailing and a plain upper bust strip that perfectly matched her shoulder piece. The chic dress was layered with a white lace buba.

Jiri paired the breathtaking ensemble with her locs styled into a top bun and bangs. She rocked a “no makeup” look and wore a simple pearl choker with matching pin-up pearl earrings.

Jiri exuded a powerful aura reminiscent of the fearless matriarch. A vision of regal elegance and cultural pride! This look was more than just fashion; it is a statement, a celebration of our heritage, and a timeless tribute to a woman who shaped our nation of resourceful, strong, and resilient changemakers.

What a great way to pay homage to the iconic activist!

Some social media reactions after watching “Supacell” had us laughing hard:

Just finished Supacell and I have one question. Why doesn’t Dionne listen????? Daniel

Can we blame them? We felt the same way after watching the Netflix hit series “Supacell.” The blossoming love story between Dionne and Michael was heartwarming, especially after the beautiful proposal. We were expecting a fairytale wedding, but things took a dramatic turn. Suddenly, Michael and four other Black South Londoners discover their superpowers, and the revelation of Dionne’s death throws everything into chaos.

When we spoke with Rapman, the creator of “Supacell,” to confirm if Dionne was truly gone, his response was, “In the world that we live in, nobody comes back from the dead.”

Adelayo Adedayo, a British actress, made her feature film debut in “Sket” in 2011. She gained recognition on television with roles in the BBC Three sitcom “Some Girls” (2012–2014) and the ITV2 series “Timewasters” (2017–2019). In the BBC One series “The Responder,” she plays a rookie police officer alongside Martin Freeman, with the first series airing in 2022. In 2023, she was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for her performance in “The Responder,” and she attended the BAFTA event with her mum.

BellaNaija spoke exclusively with Adelayo Adedayo, who plays Dionne – Michael’s sweet, loving fiancée and a dedicated social worker. We discussed how she feels about being part of a chart-topping show, her background, and her Nigerian heritage.

How I feel today…

“I’m good. It’s nice today in London. It’s hot, which is a blessing for us. We don’t get it very often, so I’m happy.”

The thrill of being on a chart-topping Netflix show is…

“Amazing! Oh, it feels amazing. One of my favourite things about being an actor and telling stories is connecting with people or having people connect to themes or characters or even sometimes just a sentence. People can hear a sentence and they connect to it or it means something to them. And to have so many people connecting, that’s really amazing.”

The reason Dionne didn’t go home when Michael asked is…

“Love. But firstly, that’s on the script. It’s what’s there. When you’re in love and considering that the first time he asked her, he didn’t really fight her on going home, it makes sense. The two of them, having been through everything they’ve been through—without communicating, each doing their own thing, both feeling like the other is in danger when it’s the other one who’s in danger—finally come together. They’ve communicated, they know exactly where they are and what’s going to happen. They don’t have much time together, so would you want to leave? It’s a situation they’ve never been in before. Either way, it would have been hard for them to walk away from each other at that point.”

The part of Dionne’s character I most enjoyed bringing to life on screen…

“…is her caring character. I think she goes hard for the people that she loves. And also just in her job, you can tell that she cares about people, that she will fight for people. That aspect of going hard for the people you love appeals to me. I think that would appeal to anyone because it’s just a beautiful quality, you know?”

The most memorable or challenging scene to film as Dionne was…

“The last scene. It was quite memorable because it was very sad and emotional. There was a lot of blood, and it had been raining. When we first shot it, it was raining, but halfway through it stopped, so they had to keep putting water on the floor and dousing us in water. I had to have these little blood pellets in my mouth. We were shooting at night, around 2 or 3 a.m., in the dead of winter. It was really cold. So, it was quite challenging but helped add to the despair of it all.”

The key takeaway from Dionne’s character and journey is…

“Communication. I hope they take away how important it is to communicate and talk to the people you love, to tell them what’s going on, even if it’s difficult or a very painful conversation. It’s important to talk to the people you love and tell them what’s going on. That’s what I hope people take away from Dionne.”

The character most like their real-life counterpart is…

Calvin Demba (Rodney). They’re both cheeky and witty and they’ve got a little banter. They’re both funny.”

A post shared by AdelayoAdedayo (@adelayoadedayo)

If I could have any superpower, it would be…”

“To fly. Nadine’s character flies. We only see it at the end, but I think I would choose to fly because you know what? Yeah, sometimes you want to go rest. You just want to leave the people down below and go in. Do you know what I mean? You want to relax. You don’t want anybody saying anything in your ear, and you want to escape for a little while. And I think that the ability to do that on a tough day—chef’s kiss.”

The ideal way to enjoy pounded yam is…

“Simple. Pounded yam, stew (normal red stew) and okra. Perfect. Some people think this is controversial—but I like pounded yam and champagne. I think they go together so well. If not, ice-cold water with loads of ice cubes. Perfect.”

A little about me

“I’m an only child and a British Nigerian. I studied law, went to law school and then dropped out because I was like, ‘what am I doing? This is not where I’m supposed to be.'”

I made the switch to acting

“When I went to uni, I was acting part-time. And then after uni, to be a fully qualified lawyer, I had to take the LPC, which is a year’s course, specifically law school. And it was during that time I realised… because at university, even though you’re doing a law degree, there’s a lot of theory. You’re talking a lot and engaging with your peers. You have an opinion, you’re allowed to debate. But at law school, it’s not a debate. This is just the law. This is what the law is. This is what you need to know to become a lawyer. And it stopped being indulgent and fun. It became very practical. And I was like, oh, this isn’t for me. What am I doing here? I’m not supposed to be here. So then I was like, okay, I’m just gonna walk away and focus on acting full-time. And I did. And I haven’t looked back.”

How my parents initially reacted

“Not very well. I think my mom was just—well, incredibly nervous because a career as an actor was not ever presented to her. She never stopped me from acting. She loved that I did it. She loves the arts and things like that. But as a career, she was like, ‘this is not something that I know can make you secure.’ And for her and me, as well, to be honest, when I was growing up, actors were in America; they weren’t in London. So it just wasn’t viable to her. It took her a while to go, ‘okay, you can support yourself and make a living,’ which is all she cared about. Do you know what I mean? She just wanted me to be okay.”

Current favourites on my playlist

“Do you know what? This morning, I was vibing to “Happiness” by Asake. What else is in my head? I was also listening to “Dangote” by Burna Boy. My Afrobeats song choice changes every day because there are many great artists. I tend to listen to Afrobeats in the morning because it sets you up for the day. It’s a lot of fun.”

Next on Supacell

“Oh, I don’t know. I can tell you nothing. If I do, I’ll be in a lot of trouble. So I don’t know.”

In the early 90s, tuning into NTA 2 Channel 5 often meant being greeted by Onyeka Onwenu‘s “Iyogogo bellowing out from your TV screen. With its blend of softness and raw emotion, the song envelops you in its gentle melody, reminding you that while love is beautiful, it comes with its ups and downs. When the chorus, “Iyogogo iyogogo,” comes on, you’ll likely find yourself dancing along, just like Onyeka did in the music video.

If you understand the Igbo lyrics, you might find yourself curious about what was happening at the bishop’s house that required her presence by 5. K’anyi je na nke Bishopu na 5 akuola

Elegant, graceful, and steadfast, there are many words to describe Onyeka Onwenu, but “icon” and “legend” stand out. Her talents spanned music, film, and literature; and she expressed them all with remarkable elegance and skill.

Onyeka may have passed on, but her legacy lives on through her music, her memorable film roles, her activism for a better Nigeria, and her memoir that detailed her life’s journey.

In celebrating her well-lived life, here’s a rundown of what Onyeka Onwenu is remembered for:

Her prominent films:

Half Of A Yellow Sun” (2013): In this adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel, Onyeka Onwenu played the role of Odenigbo’s (Chiwetel Ejiofor) strong-willed mother, alongside a star-studded cast including Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Gboyega, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose and Genevieve Nnaji

Lionheart” (2018): Directed by Genevieve Nnaji, Onyeka portrayed Abigail Obiagu, the supportive mother of Adaeze and Obiora, and wife of Chief Ernest Obiagu. In a memorable scene, she encourages her daughter Adaeze, who is struggling with her role in the family business, saying, “Don’t slouch, sit up, be strong, it is not over until it is over. God never gives you a burden He has not equipped you to carry. Do away with the sentiments and emotions, get the job done; you have it in you, dig deep.”

God Calling (2018): In this religious drama, Onyeka played Mama Francis, the mother of Karibi Fubara’s character. The film also stars Zainab Balogun and Richard MofeDamijo. The writer and director, BB Sasore, described her Onyeka as the most pleasant woman ever. “A true ‘mother hen’, she gave the entire crew gifts on her last day.

Obara ‘M (My Blood)” (2023): Onyeka portrayed Nwakaego in this musical drama, which follows the journey of a rising music star, Oluchi.

Other notable films featuring Onyeka include “Iwe Ajele, “Widow’s Cot,” “Rising Moon,” “Every Single Day,” “The Trinity,” “Government House” and more.

Her first film role was in Zik Zulu Okafor’s “Nightmare,” where she played Joke, a childless woman who adopts an abandoned baby. In 2006, Onyeka won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in “Widow’s Cot” and was also nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for “Rising Moon” the same year.

Her greatest hits:

Wait For Me featuring King Sunny Ade (1989): This song is one of three collaborations between Onyeka Onwenu and King Sunny Ade. It carries a powerful message advocating for responsible family planning and safe sex. The Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria endorsed the song in their public service announcements.

One Love” (1991): Perhaps Onyeka’s most iconic song, “One Love” is a heartfelt plea for unity and peace in a world often divided by conflict and strife. Its timeless message resonates deeply with listeners.

Iyogogo” (1984): This track explores the complexities and uncertainties of romantic relationships, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster of love. The song’s themes of longing and confusion have made it a classic, and it was later interpolated by the popular duo P-Square in their hit “Bank Alert.”

You and I” (1991): A soulful ballad, “You and I” celebrates a deep, enduring bond between two people. The lyrics express a profound commitment to a lifelong partnership, filled with love, unity, and mutual admiration.

Ekwe” (1984): Fusing Igbo folk music with funk, “Ekwe” serves as a call to accountability and responsibility. The traditional African drum (ekwe) symbolizes a summons or call to action, with the singer acknowledging her obligations and the expectations placed upon her.

Her other hit songs include “Bia Nulu,” “Alleluya,” “Dancing In The Sun” and others. Besides King Sunny Ade, she also collaborated with artists like Funke Akinokun, Segun Obe, Pat King, Sammie Okposo on the song “Love Is All What We Need.”

My Father’s Daughter

In October 2020, Onyeka Onwenu released her memoir, “My Father’s Daughter.” This riveting autobiography offers an intimate look into her life as a musician, activist, wife, mother, and politician. The book chronicles her experiences, from the deep affection of her father and the turmoil of the Nigeria-Biafra war to her career and advocacy work. It paints a vivid picture of her journey, touching on themes like feminism and family dynamics, and showcases the many facets of her remarkable life.

Rest in peace, Onyeka Onwenu.

Have you met the housemates of the current Big Brother “No Loose Guard” season? They are already settling in and getting to know each other as they prepare for the challenges Big Brother has in store for them. On their first night, Big Brother assigned them a task to search through a dirty pool of bottles to find the one containing the custodian badge, and Nne of the pair Ndi Nne won the challenge.

This year’s BBNaija housemates come in pairs, a surprising twist added to the show. Many of the housemates had intriguing lives before entering Big Brother’s house. They come from various backgrounds, including media, music, business, entertainment, and the corporate world, making their pre-BBNaija lives particularly interesting.

One pair is Wanni x Handi, twins who are DJs and performers. Before fully committing to DJing, Wanni and Handi dabbled in TV presenting, acting, and digital marketing. Their passion for music, nurtured since childhood, eventually led them to pursue careers as DJs. Since 2021, the duo has performed nationwide, delivering high-energy sets and choreography to their audiences.

It’s the 2nd day of season 9 of Big Brother Naija, and the twists are already starting to unfold. The Head of House (HoH) game took an unexpected turn with the winners being selected through a ballot draw. The Mbadiwe Twins won the challenge, becoming the first HoH of the season. In a surprising twist, it was announced that the Heads of House will not have immunity, a huge departure from previous seasons where the HoH enjoyed immunity from eviction nominations and had veto power to save and replace housemates.

However, Big Brother has decided that this season, there will be no immunity for the Heads of House, setting the stage for a season full of unexpected turns!

Last night, Ndi Nne (Nne and Chinwe) won the first custodian challenge of the season.

The challenge required each of the 28 housemates to select a representative from their pairs. The 14 chosen representatives then had to find a plastic bottle hidden inside a pool of water. Nne successfully found the bottle with the custodian badge, making her duo the winners of the challenge. Their reward includes immunity for the week and the possession of a mystery card that allows them to influence nominations or evictions.

Watch Ndi Nne win the challenge:

The duo Beta, consisting of friends Tjay and Ben, won the first immunity challenge by successfully scoring seven balls into a basket, achieving the highest score among the 14 competing pairs. Like the custodian challenge, this victory grants them immunity from eviction this week.

As a result, Ndi Nne and Beta are safe from potential eviction, leaving the remaining contestants—Chekas, Nelita, Shatoria, Aces, Wanni x Handi, Zinwe, Doublekay, Streeze, Tami, Mbadiwe Twins, Floruish, and Radicals—all up for eviction.

Big Brother has announced that this Sunday, at least one pair with the fewest votes will be sent home. To save your favourite pair, make sure to vote. To vote via the website, kindly register here. The highly anticipated Big Brother Naija “No Loose Guard” has officially kicked off, and the spectacular house is already buzzing with energy as the housemates embark on their journey to fame and fortune.

This season’s surprising twist introduces pairs into the mix, promising a thrilling blend of competition, collaboration, and unexpected drama. With 14 pairs – including two sets of twins, a married couple, besties, gym bros, and even a niece and aunt – the dynamics are sure to be explosive.

Big Brother’s house has always been a hotbed of drama, laughter, and unforgettable moments, and this season is poised to be no exception.

As the housemates settle in, let’s get to know them better.

Chekas (Chizoba and Onyeka)

Relationship: Sisters and best friends

Chizoba (31) Software Developer
Origin: Anambra State

Onyeka (28) Lawyer and Entrepreneur
Origin: Anambra State

Their bond as sisters was formed the minute Onyeka, the younger sister, was born. In Chizoba’s words, “We hit it off from the first day I laid my eyes on her”. As sisters, they sure have their differences, but this doesn’t stop them for having each other’s backs during challenging times.

Relationship rollercoaster:
High point: Fighting for each other and putting each other first.
Low point: Choosing friends and boyfriends over family.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting talents in Nollywood, Uzor Arukwe talks about his career journey, his Hollywood premiere experience  and his role in the recent film “What About Us?

In our previous feature, we caught up with Folu Storms, who talked to us about her lawyer-to-media star journey, her signature Afrocentric style and her role in the upcoming Nora Awolowo‘s upcoming movie “Red Circle.” If you missed it, you can read it here.

From “Tonnie Fishbrain,” a film he did out of pure passion without receiving a dime, to starring in the highest grossing Nollywood movie “A Tribe Called Judah,” Uzor Arukwe has proven his versatility and resilience. Overcoming the typical challenges faced by those breaking into Nollywood without an easy path, Uzor has not only earned his place in the Nigerian film industry but also established himself as a force to be reckoned with. His journey has been marked by continuous growth and evolution, with no signs of slowing down.

The economist-turned-actor recently returned from Los Angeles, where he attended the premiere of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.” In our conversation, Uzor shares the beginnings of his acting journey, the challenges he has faced, and the pivotal movie that changed his career trajectory. He also gives us a glimpse into his Hollywood premiere experience, including the thrill of being in the same space as Eddie Murphy, and hints at the possibility of seeing him in a Hollywood film in the near future.

***

Hi Uzor, it’s super nice to have you on BellaNaija Meet the Star. How are you doing?

I’m great. I thank God. I’m taking it one day at a time, so yeah, it’s been good.

You just returned from LA for the Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley premiere. What was it like experiencing the glitz and glam of a Hollywood premiere for the first time?

It was swell. It was amazing. It’s the closest I’ve been to Hollywood. Being in the same space as the greats, like Eddie Murphy and others I can’t quite remember, was incredible. Most of the movie stars were there, and some other friends like Big Sean and Jay Pharoah. It felt like I was getting closer to my dream. Every African or Nigerian artist dreams of starring in Hollywood movies, and being in that space just made me feel like I’m getting closer. It was such a breath of fresh air. Yes, it was great, to be honest.

And you were the only Nigerian actor at the premiere. Does this signify a possible crossover to Hollywood?

I believe it signifies a possible crossover to Hollywood. As I said earlier, it’s the dream of every African or Nigerian artist to star in Hollywood movies. Being in the same space as these great people makes you feel like you’re getting closer. God is working and making sure you’re getting closer. It’s not just about being in the same space, but also in the same films as them.

As for what was responsible for this opportunity, I’m a very versatile actor. I’m good with comedy; I understand comedic timing, punchlines, and drama. Beverly Hills Cop is a serious film with comedic elements, so they wanted someone versatile enough to represent both genres. I feel like I’m one of those actors in Nigeria who can do both drama and comedy, as well as thriller, sci-fi, or horror. Comedic timing and having a natural funny bone aren’t easy to learn. I believe my versatility was a major reason they chose me, and it makes me excited.

Let’s rewind a bit. You have quite an interesting background – balancing economics and business degrees with a passion for the arts. How did you manage these seemingly different paths early on? Did your analytical skills ever come in handy in the world of acting?

I believe my analytical skills played a role, but they are two different skill sets. I’m an economist through and through, and I’m also an actor through and through. I’ve undergone both direct and indirect training in acting, and it’s a skill set I’ve acquired and developed over time. Being an economist has helped my brain muscles to retain lines and to dissect my character, understanding better what my character requires and what is demanded. So yes, no knowledge is ever wasted. All my degrees have helped me become a better actor, but they are indeed two different skill sets.

Speaking of your career changes, the switch from a corporate job to acting couldn’t have been easy. What finally pushed you to take the plunge and fully commit to acting in 2018?

The major reason would be that God made me very uneasy. It wasn’t easy. I had worked for almost 10 years in corporate and still did not find fulfilment or satisfaction. I was climbing the ladder in the business, but I wasn’t fulfiled. Coupled with my boss not being the easiest person to work with, I decided it was time to jump into that scary, uncomfortable zone of my life. I took the leap of faith, and God has been faithful since then.

Did you ever have moments where you questioned your decision and considered going back to a nine-to-five?

Of course, several times. After I left in April 2018, I had a fatal accident in May 2018. I didn’t get a job until August 2018 when Onyinye Udezeh called me to do a film for Iroko. During that period, I was fixing the cars I damaged in the accident, and it was very trying. I was really broke. In August 2018, Onyinye called, and my life gradually started taking a turn. I’m grateful to God for that. I got a job with Keystone Bank, did my medicals, got my offer letter, but decided to focus on my creative skills. Thank God, here I am.

We know your mum championed your acting dreams, but your dad might still be warming up to the idea. How did you navigate these family dynamics and chase your passion?

It’s still difficult because my father hasn’t fully come around. My mom knew this was my calling but was slow to coming around. When she did, she supported and prayed for me, igniting the fire inside me. My father still hasn’t accepted that his son is an actor. It’s a delicate, slippery slope. I’m careful with how I talk and handle myself around him. He’s old now and not as reactive. He’s been hearing about my job, but it’s not easy to navigate. I’m still finding my feet, letting everyone understand that it’s a full-time job, not a hobby. This is what God has called me to do, and I’m glad to be doing it.

The movie “Sugar Rush” seems to have been a game-changer for you. Tell us about the experience and how it impacted your career.

We shot “Sugar Rush” sometime in 2019 or 2018. I was working on an African Magic telenovela called “Unbroken,” where I was on set for about eight months. One night, I came back from work, and while scrolling through Instagram, I saw my colleagues Bimbo Ademoye, Adesua Etomi, Bisola Aiyeola, and others on the set of “Sugar Rush.” I prayed and wished to be part of such films.

The next morning, I saw a missed call from Jade Osiberu on Truecaller, and I was excited because I knew. I called the number back, and she said she wanted me to do a film; apparently, it was “Sugar Rush.” I then spoke with Vinny, one of her team members in production, and we made the deal. I was on set for three days. I was working on “Unbroken” from morning till night, and I would shoot all night on “Sugar Rush” and then go to work. So for the three days I was on the set of “Sugar Rush,” I didn’t sleep much, barely getting four to five hours of sleep in between. But I was willing to do it, and I believe that it changed everything because that was one of my first entrances into cinema. People seemed to like my performance, and then God started doing what He could do, what He would normally do from then on. And yeah, it just changed the entire trajectory of my career, and I’m so grateful to God for that.

Looking back at your journey, from “Tonnie Fishbrain” to “Sugar Rush” to “The Tribe Called Judah” and now “What About Us?”, what has changed the most for you in terms of your approach to acting and the roles you take on?

Let me tell you a fun fact about “Tonnie FishBrain.” It was one of my first films ever, which I did while still in university as part of the Christ Embassy Project. It was a laboUr of love, and I didn’t get paid a dime for it. We shot the film in Ozark Valley in Abia State, and it took almost a month under some of the most challenging conditions. The great, blessed memory, Reginald Ebere, directed the film, which was some sort of musical. It was very tough, but I didn’t mind because I was passionate about it. I didn’t receive any payment for the film, perhaps because I attended Christ Embassy at the time, and they considered it ministry work.

One thing I’ve learned about the arts is that you learn something new every day. Art isn’t like science, where one plus one always equals two. Art is dynamic and constantly evolving. You can never truly graduate from the School of Arts because there’s always more to learn. You strive to be more organic, get comfortable in your own skin, and understand a wider range of emotions and reactions. Since “Tonnie Fishbrain,” I’ve received more training, both direct and indirect, including masterclasses. I have mentors now, like John Ndjama and Stella Damasus, who have influenced my acting techniques. I understand various acting techniques and choose which one to use for particular films, scripts, or sets.

I’ve evolved and continue to evolve in my craft. As Tom Hardy once said, there’s convincing and non-convincing acting. The moment your performance isn’t convincing, it’s a poor performance. I always strive to deliver a convincing performance. Since “Tonnie Fishbrain,” I’ve also been involved in stage plays and dramas. I aim to become more fluid, seamless, and organic in my craft, which I love so much. I’m committed to continually improving and getting better.

Speaking of “What About Us?”, tell us about your experience working on the project. Did you have any favourite scenes or moments?

I did. First of all, it’s a faith-based project, but what I like most about it, or even why I like it so much, is that, as much as it’s faith-based, it’s not screaming “Christian, Christian movie” in your face. It’s not saying, “Oh, I’m a Christian movie.” No, it’s a film that’s relatable because it’s about things that happen in our day-to-day lives. As an actor, we look forward to those scenes where you’re given the freedom to navigate different emotions—from smiling to anger to sadness. There were a lot of moments like that, a funny and emotional rollercoaster, in “What’s About Us.”

There was this dialogue I had with Folu Storms, who played my wife in the film, where we were both crying at the same time. It was beautiful to do. It was a lot of work because it’s an emotional, performance-driven film, and very emotional overall. So, it was tough, but I enjoyed it. As an actor, I’m always up for the task. The more emotionally tasking and daunting the film is, the more excited I get.

Given the increasing popularity of streaming platforms and YouTube for film distribution, are you considering producing films for YouTube? If so, what can we expect from your future projects?

I’m a big fan of the YouTube platform because it has provided livelihoods for many people, including crew members and actors. A lot of people are cashing out, making money, and making a living from that platform. As for whether I will produce content, to be honest, I’m not sure at this moment because I don’t like to follow the bandwagon. I’m a rebel; I’ve always been a rebel. I think that’s why many people call me the dark horse because I hate to conform. I always like to shake things up.

If I ever do something on YouTube, it probably won’t be making films. I might do some other type of content that I love and can relate to. I’m not sure what to call it, maybe not necessarily podcasts, but something related to the arts and actors—perhaps an interview or chat room where actors can express themselves about the films they’ve done. But as for producing, I’m not sure, though that could change tomorrow. I might decide to make a film or some skits; who knows? As an artist, I’m dynamic and cannot be put in a box. So, that’s that for now. If I ever do produce, I’d want to aim high, perhaps not make a film for YouTube but rather for the big screens. If I’m going to do it, I’d rather do it big. I have great respect for the platform and am a big fan of all the work that goes into creating content for YouTube.

What Nigerian song is currently on repeat on your playlist?

“Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo” is one of those songs that isn’t on my playlist but has been living rent-free in my head. I also really like the song “Ogechi“—it’s on repeat on my playlist. I’m a big fan of many Afrobeat artists, from Rema to Wande Cole. Wande Coal’s work, in particular, stands out to me. I also enjoy King Promise’s music.

When you are not gracing the set, what would we find Uzo Arukwe typically doing?

When I’m not gracing the set, you’ll find I like to have drinks, often by myself, maybe in a lounge. I enjoy going to lounges because I can see different people—not necessarily interacting with them but being able to observe and assimilate various characterisations. I watch people a lot, especially when they are in their elements, whether intoxicated or just talking. This helps me learn and build an arsenal in my emotional reservoir that enhances my performances. So, when I’m not on set, I’m either at a lounge having a drink or somewhere listening to great music. Typically, I love movies, and I watch a lot of them. If I’m not in a lounge having a drink, I most probably would be at home watching a movie or at the cinemas. Additionally, I used to do martial arts, though I haven’t trained in a long time, and I also play basketball. Those are the things I do for recreation.

If you had the opportunity to get the government’s attention to grant your wish towards the growth of Nollywood, what would you wish for?

“More money. We need more funding. We need the backing of the government to access locations and sets, including offices in aviation and maritime, trains, airplanes, and boats. Having funding and the necessary paperwork done to access the stadium, national theatre, hospitals, and other places is needed. It’s important to recognise that what we do is a job—a full-time job that requires a lot of work. It’s almost like a military operation, and we take it very seriously. If the government supports us, I’d ask for access to various industries and banks to use different locations and sets, or industries as sets, to truly encapsulate the message we’re trying to convey to the consumers. That’s pretty much it.”

Imagine you flip a coin: heads, you get 100 million naira; tails, zero naira. If you don’t flip at all, you get five million naira guaranteed. Would you take the chance or go with the guaranteed five million?

I will flip the freaking coin. I will flip the coin. I believe in favour, grace and goodwill. I will flip the coin. Five million is a lot of money, but I believe that if I can earn one hundred million, why not go for a hundred million as opposed to settling for five million? To be honest, life has taught me that it’s risky not to take a risk. You know, I feel like there’s a lot more on the other side of fear. So, I would flip the coin. Yep!

Thank you BellaNaija. I see the great work that you guys are doing. Keep doing it. I’m such a big fan. Thank you for having me.
