South African breakout star and Grammy award-winning sensation, Tyla, graces the cover of ELLE Magazine’s October 2024 issue. At just 22, Tyla has experienced one of the most meteoric rises in recent music history, captivating audiences around the world. Only a few years ago, she was a high school student in Johannesburg with dreams of stardom. Today, she has made history as the first South African solo artist to land on the Billboard Hot 100 since the iconic Hugh Masekela did so 55 years ago. In addition, Tyla became the inaugural winner of the Grammy’s new category, Best African Music Performance, for her hit single “Water.”

Reflecting on her whirlwind year, Tyla hints at what’s to come: “This year was me introducing myself. Next year, I’m just gonna have fun. Do whatever, wear whatever. I’m just playing around a lot, and bringing a lot of my roots into my music. It’s still gonna be me, still sweaty vibes, but evolved.”

In her interview, Tyla opens up about her upcoming project, the global rise of African pop, and her commitment to keeping her culture alive through her music. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Tyla is determined to maintain her authenticity while celebrating her African heritage in everything she creates.

Read excerpts of the interview below:

On Amapiano:

“When amapiano would come on, we would see everybody’s moves just change. Seeing the energy of it…it felt so spiritual,” she tells me. “I always wanted to mix it with other styles that I enjoy, like R&B and pop—and make it my own.” It was frustrating to watch her country’s unique music, from amapiano to kwaito house, go unnoticed by the rest of the world. “I felt it was so special, and it needed to be shared. I did my own version of it in hopes of getting people to go deeper and discover the other artists we have and the origins of my sound.”

On South African music:

“Another thing about South African music: There can be a depressing song, but the beat just makes you wanna dance. So I also like incorporating that in my stuff. While you’re crying, dance and shake your ass at the same time,” she says with a laugh. Whenever she listens to the amapiano song “Healer Ntliziyo Yam,” for instance, she cries. “I know what I like,” Tyla says. “I know what I wanna look like. I know what is cool, especially now. I trust my judgment, and yeah, I love collaborating with people and going outside of my comfort zone, but not too far off where it feels like something I wouldn’t do. If I don’t like it, I’m not going to do it.”

Reflecting on her wild year,

“I do feel like I’ve changed a lot in the span of a few months; people may not see it. I’m excited to see that in my next album.” She describes that change as starting to detach from what people say or think about her, after feeling annoyed at constant comparisons to Rihanna and “I’m a Slave 4 U”-era Britney Spears. “Initially I used to care. Recently I’ve just been feeling, ‘They’re gonna say what they wanna say, and it doesn’t even matter because I know it’s not that,’” Tyla says. She posts less and sometimes deletes social media apps from her phone for a week at a time.

“This year was me introducing myself. Next year I’m just gonna have fun,” she says. “Do whatever, wear whatever. I’m just playing around a lot, and bringing a lot of my roots into my music. It’s still gonna be me, still sweaty vibes, but evolved.”

Tems has been serving up spectacular looks and style throughout her “Born In the Wild“ tour. After wrapping up the U.S. leg with surprise performances from John Legend and Ayra Starr, she headed to Toronto, Canada, where she continued to impress. For her Toronto performance, she stunned the crowd in a bright red fringe jumpsuit, paired with her signature flawless makeup.

Among the concert’s notable attendees was Drake, who was spotted in the VIP section, nodding along to the music. Despite battling a cold, Tems didn’t let it stop her from delivering an unforgettable show. “I have a cold, but we’re gonna dance this cold away,” she told the audience.

Tems performed a medley of songs from her debut album, “Born In The Wild,” along with fan favourites from her earlier projects. One of the highlights of her tour in Canada came when her hit track “Me & U” was officially certified Gold in Canada, having sold over 40,000 units.

Meanwhile, the illustrious event was aptly themed “Made in Lagos“ and Chalya gave fans a backstory to her moment in the spotlight. On Instagram, she wrote regarding the theme:

I’ll explain. I was conceived in Lagos. And born in Lagos. Lagos Island to be precise. At the Lagos Island Maternity in the early 70s (yes!!! 👀 ).

When I got the invitation for the #LagosCanvas event from @moabudu & the United States Consular General Will Stevens in Lagos, I knew there was no way I could go in my birthday suit (😂) seeing as the event was themed “Made in Lagos”, so I opted for my Deola Sagoe number which I purchased nearly 20 years ago. 2006 to be exact. Obviously made in Lagos by @deolasagoeofficial at the then Odua Creations studio in Lagos. So perfect!! #Vintagegold

Now… little did I know that I would bump into the designer and artist (#DeolaSagoe) herself at the event. Her face lit up as we ‘clocked’ each other once I entered the room. I felt such an instant jolt of energy I’m wearing her art and she is appreciating said art on me?

Chidimma Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, recently appeared on BBC News Pidgin, where she shared the emotional journey that led her from Miss South Africa (SA) to winning the Nigerian title of Miss Universe.

“When I heard my name called, I had a sense of relief, a sense of accomplishment… It was a very powerful moment for me,” she revealed, reflecting on the moment she was announced as the winner.

Chidimma opened up about the tears she shed, overwhelmed by the realisation of her achievement. Initially, she had reservations about pageantry, thinking it was only for younger women. However, after learning more about it, she became intrigued and decided to sign up for Miss SA in 2022. Though she didn’t make it that year, her determination drove her to try again in 2024, where she reached the top 13.

Despite feeling hesitant about accepting the Miss Universe Nigeria invitation, as it came so soon after her withdrawal from Miss SA, her resilience pushed her to take on the challenge.

She also shared her excitement about winning the crown and her goal to represent Nigeria on the global stage at Miss Universe.

The 2024 Miss Universe Nigeria competition concluded with a grand finale this evening at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island, where Chidimma Adetshina, representing Taraba, was declared the winner.

Chidimma, who withdrew as a finalist from the recently concluded 2024 Miss South Africa beauty pageant, joined the Miss Universe Nigeria competition after accepting an invitation from the organisers of the pageant, Silverbird Group.,

She now takes over the crown from the 2023 Miss Universe Nigeria, Mitchel Ihezue, receiving a reward of ₦10 million in cash along with other prizes. She will also represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November.

I feel like now, in the world, everybody wears many different things from different places. We’re not always wearing our traditional clothing that we’re used to wearing, from where we came from. But it doesn’t change who we are.

 

I’m always going to be Nigerian. You have to show up as who you really are, in your blood. I know my culture: I’m Yoruba. And I know—if I was to get married tomorrow, I know the attire that we’re all wearing as a family. And anything that has to do with representing Nigeria always needs to reflect that.

As a Nigerian, I feel emotional, which is what I think art should be. Art is emotion expressed.

The Miss Universe Nigeria pageant is back for its 2024 edition, following the success of last year’s event. The organisers have announced that this year’s winner will receive ₦10 million in cash along with other prizes, emphasising the pageant’s commitment to empowering women.

This year, 25 contestants, including newcomer Chidimma Adetshina, will represent different states across Nigeria. Last year’s winner, Mitchel Ihezue from Imo State, went on to represent Nigeria at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador. The 2024 winner will similarly represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November, while the runner-up will participate in the Miss Supranational pageant.

Arthur Ngwube, Brand Manager of Silverbird Group, unveiled the official theme for this year’s competition, ‘Digital Divas.’ He said this theme reflects the growing significance of digital presence and influence, urging the delegates to leverage technology, social media, and digital platforms in their journey toward the crown.

Anthony Abraham, the Camp Coordinator, shared details about the activities lined up for the delegates during their one-week stay at Festival Hotel Festac. These activities are designed to challenge and enhance the contestants’ skills in various areas:

  • Pitch for Business Ideas: Delegates will present innovative business ideas, fostering entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.
  • Fashion Show: This event will allow delegates to showcase their style and fashion sense, highlighting the creativity of Nigerian fashion brands.
  • Tea Party: A refined social event aimed at promoting networking and building relationships among delegates and stakeholders.

Voting has officially begun, allowing the public to cast their votes for their favourite contestant as many times as they wish. The voting process will remain open until the eve of the event on August 30, 2024, engaging the public in selecting the next Miss Universe Nigeria.

Styled by Dahmola on the most interesting episode yet, Toke appeared in a stunning red dress from PK Crotchet aptly named Candy Cain for her second episode featuring media personality Cynthia Okeke & sensational content creator Joseph Onaolapo better known as “Jay On Air“.

The Candy Cain dress featured interesting ball hems that adorned the neck, sleeves, and lower hem, adding a sophisticated touch. The bright red hue of the dress perfectly suited her vibrant personality and her role as the show host.

Chidimma Adetshina has officially entered the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, following a recent invitation from its organisers. This comes after she withdrew as a finalist from the Miss South Africa pageant due to controversy surrounding her Nigerian heritage.

Representing Taraba State, Chidimma expressed her excitement in a heartfelt acceptance video, where she thanked Silverbird Group, the event’s organisers, and shared her anticipation for the journey ahead.

“I have decided to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 beauty pageant… I am looking forward to participating in Africa’s most prestigious beauty pageant – Miss Universe Nigeria,” she said.

The Miss Universe Nigeria pageant has officially extended an invitation to Chidimma Adetshina, inviting her to participate in the upcoming Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 competition. Chidimma, who was a finalist in the 2024 Miss South Africa beauty pageant, recently withdrew from the competition following a controversy over her Nigerian heritage—that sparked national debate and led to a government investigation.

Born in South Africa to a Nigerian father (Igbo) and a Mozambican mother, Chidimma, now a naturalised South African, faced both support and criticism for her participation.

On August 8th, Chidimma announced her decision to step down from the Miss South Africa pageant, citing concerns for her family’s safety. “Being part of the Miss South Africa 2024 competition has been an amazing journey; however, after much careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to withdraw myself from the competition for the safety and well-being of my family and me. With the support of the Miss South Africa Organisation, I leave with a heart full of gratitude for this amazing experience,” she shared on Instagram.

In response, Miss Universe Nigeria reached out to Chidimma via Instagram today, acknowledging the challenges she faced and offering their support. “We at Miss Universe Nigeria have been closely following the developments regarding your decision to bow out of the Miss South Africa beauty pageant. We acknowledge the circumstances surrounding your withdrawal and understand the challenges you may be facing. In light of these events, we want to extend our support and encouragement,” read the message.

Miss Universe Nigeria went on to express their belief that Chidimma’s journey in the world of pageantry is far from over, inviting her to represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. “As a Nigerian by heritage, we would like to formally invite you to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. This is an opportunity to represent your father’s native land on an international stage, and we believe you would be an outstanding contender,” the invitation continued.

The organisation emphasised that the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant celebrates the strength, intelligence, and diversity of Nigerian women, and they encouraged Chidimma to consider this opportunity.

Have you met Anita Ukah? She’s one half of Nelita in the BBNaija “No Loose Guard” season. Anita stepped into Biggie’s house alongside her friend of 9 years, Nelly, whom she met at a beauty pageant audition in Owerri, Imo State. They connected instantly.

Before BBNaija, Anita had already made significant strides. Standing tall at 6’2, the beauty queen who was representing Imo State, clinched the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria title in 2018. That same year, she represented Nigeria at the Miss World pageant in China, making it to the Top 30.

Anita isn’t new to pageantry. She won the title of Miss Igbinedion University in 2014 and earned her Bachelor’s degree there in 2016. She has a master’s degree in public health from the University of Chester. Anita is a specialist practitioner in infection prevention and control and a medical laboratory scientist.

Beyond her pageant titles and academic achievements, Anita is an entrepreneur. She launched her bag collection, The Uzo Brand, and has been an advocate for the promotion of locally made products.

]]> The Crop Over festival was ablaze with Ayra Starr’s electrifying energy and show-stopping sultry style.

The Afropop star was spotted on board the Aura Experience truck with Pop star Rihanna‘s friends and family as the Bajan Kadooment Queen celebrated one of Barbados’ most beloved festivals’ 50th Anniversary with a grand return to the streets, for the first time since 2019.

Rihanna and Ayra Starr commanded attention in custom bedazzled Lauren Austin costumes at the event, also known as the Grand Kadooment parade, which was held in St. Michael, as a major part of the 3-month long Crop Over festival of Barbadian music, arts, food, culture, and more.

Since its inception in 1974, it has become a yearly event to attract tourists to the island and keep the local folk culture alive. The festival usually kicks off in June and runs until the first Monday in August with a grand carnival parade known as Kadooment Day, widely considered the biggest Caribbean carnival.

Stunning as ever, Bad Gal Riri and Sabi Girl Ayra had a swell time in Ri’s home country serving flawless glowing skin, undeniable charisma, and fun dance moves. Since meeting at the Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty Event event in London during the first half of the year, the bond between the duo seems to have blossomed beautifully.

Ayra’s colourful ensemble featured charming blue, lavender, baby blue, lemon and white feathers with multicoloured gems embellished around her sheer jumpsuit and OTT headpiece. The serum, formulated with a ground-breaking Molecule Patent by L’Oreal Dermatological Beauty Paris, has an anti-relapse effect and noticeable difference in as short as one week.

The event commenced at 3:00 pm with a welcome address by Beatrice Eneh -the CEO of Ricks and Clare Solution – The Company Representing L’Oreal Dermatology For its Go-to-Market and Medical Strategy in Nigeria. Thereafter; a light afternoon cocktail followed by warm introductions of all special guests. Distinguished guests from the healthcare sector, including esteemed dermatologists, aesthetic physicians, nurses, aestheticians, and influential skincare personalities, were in attendance to explore advancements in the management of hyperpigmentation.

An interactive presentation by consultant dermatologist Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife, showcasing the burden of hyperpigmentation and the transformative benefits of Mela B3 serum for individuals with hyperpigmentation, was the highlight of the meeting. The Mela B3 serum was lauded as a breakthrough solution, meticulously crafted after almost two decades of research to address the challenge of hyperpigmentation faced by more than 50% of people, without the common adverse effects of many depigmenting agents. A roundtable discussion of consultant dermatologists followed, with the experts expressing their challenges in managing hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones and agreeing that Mela B3 could be a game-changer in this era.

The event culminated in a closing speech by Beatrice Eneh, on behalf of L’oreal Dermatology Beauty Paris, reiterating the importance of accessible and effective skincare solutions tailored to the unique challenges of people in the African region. Attendees commemorated the occasion with group photographs followed by an evening cocktail, providing an opportunity for networking and informal dialogue among skin experts and skincare industry leaders.

Showcasing their commitment to skincare education and accessibility, L’Oréal provided guests with curated gift bags containing the new Mela B3 serum and Anthelios sunscreen samples. ]]> A Prince, a globally renowned musician, and a billionaire’s heir: Afrobeats superstar — Davido weds his favourite woman, Chioma Avril (nee Rowland) in a sensational traditional marriage ceremony he has described as the best day of his life.

The sensational couple stepped out in various stunning African traditional attires for their big day, from the Igbo Culture showcasing the beauty and fashion of Chioma’s Eastern heartland roots in Owerri, Imo State and the Yoruba Culture showcasing Davido’s royal heritage in Ede, Osun State.

Look 1

Made of custom Aso Oke from Woven Market Africa, the couple of the moment showed out in exquisitely tailored by Nigerian designers — Couture by Tabik (for Chioma) and Deji & Kola (for Davido).

The bride’s outfit was a 2-toned dress in royal colours of wine and purple, befitting her coveted status as the Prince’s chosen maiden. Her groom, the Prince, Davido, rocked a complementary elegant wine Agbada. These pieces were intricately detailed from the laser-cut floral patterns to the readings and clean lines.

According to the designer Couture by Tabik, this beautiful floral motif outfit is an allegorical garden of love and joy. Each delicate bloom represents a moment of the couple’s journey together, filled with laughter and endless love. Chioma paired her stunning dress with matching wine Gele, artfully styled in layers by Taiwo’s Touch. She accessorised with a matching Aso Oke hand fan, dainty jewellery pieces, embellished Jimmy Choo shoes, and a matching purse. Her glam featured a flawless facebeat with accentuated eyes, prominent highlights, and glossy nude lips by one of Africa’s foremost Makeup Artists – Banke Meshida Lawal of BM Pro.

Davido’s ensemble was designed by one of Africa’s foremost luxe brands, Ugo Monye and styled by John Joseph Angel while Chioma’s was created by TUBO, and styled by the ingenious creative director Sandrah Tubobereni.
