With the constant occurrence of “what I ordered versus what I got,” we thought it necessary to put together a checklist to ensure that every 21-Year-Old Gran Reserva you pick off the shelf or order is exactly what you expect. The 21-Year-Old Gran Reserva was intentionally crafted to deliver the best-rounded flavors every time you pick up our signature bottle. Ready to know what’s on the list? Keep reading.

Tips on How to Differentiate Between an Original and an Imitation of a Glenfiddich 21-year-old

Take a look at some tips to help you ensure you purchase the original Glenfiddich 21-year-old:

 • Check the Security Seal: Glenfiddich has spared no expense in safeguarding this traditional Speyside Whisky. All you have to do is regard the security seal as your first line of defense. The 21-year-old Gran Reserva is adorned with a tamper-evident seal that’s not just there for show. Before you open a bottle of the Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old, make sure this seal is intact. If it’s been tampered with, take a step back—it’s a red flag.
 • The Taste Profile: Now, assuming your bottle has passed the seal check, let’s move on to the good stuff. The Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old which was allowed to patiently mellow at the Glenfiddich distillery in Scotland for 21 years is renowned for its unique taste profile. With a rich blend of the Glenfiddich signature notes — uplifting lime notes, sweet toffee, and a hint of sultry fig — counterfeits usually fail miserably in replicating this complexity, delivering a flat, uninspiring flavor. So, trust your taste buds; it’s a reliable ally in your quest for authenticity.
 • Packaging Perfection: Authentic Glenfiddich packaging is a work of art. Many thanks to the malt master, Brian Kinsman who handpicks the whisky’s barrels and adds a finishing touch instead of merely bottling it in the usual way. The label is meticulously printed, with every detail crisp and clear. If the bottle in your hands has a wonky label, uneven printing, or a less-than-perfect finish, you might be dealing with a phony.
 • The Finishing Touch: Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old undergoes an extra special process—finished in Caribbean rum casks, it has a luxurious, lingering finish that’s unmistakable. This is a flavor note that counterfeits just can’t replicate. That smooth, warm finish with a touch of sweetness is the hallmark of an authentic Glenfiddich 21-year-old.

Still in Doubt, Reach Out

Still unsure? Don’t hesitate to call or send a WhatsApp message to +2349139384706 with your purchase details and proof. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and the Glenfiddich team is always ready to help you ensure you’ve got the real thing.

So, there you have it—your foolproof guide to ensuring that the Glenfiddich 21-Year-Old in your glass is as genuine as the craftsmanship behind it. Cheers to sipping only the finest!

The Junior Tigress, Nigeria’s U18 women’s basketball team, has secured a spot in the semifinals of the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Pretoria, South Africa, after a decisive 66-51 victory over Egypt. This marks the first time in 14 years that Nigeria has advanced to the semifinals of this tournament.

Coming into the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams, the Junior D’Tigress wasted no time establishing dominance against previously unbeaten Egypt, leading 24-13 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, they extended their lead to 37-24 at halftime.

Although the third quarter presented some challenges with turnovers and foul trouble, their defence stayed strong, and they maintained offensive pressure with fluid ball movement, ending the third with a comfortable 54-36 lead.

Egypt, who had defeated Nigeria 72-60 in the opening game of the tournament, couldn’t replicate their earlier success. Nigeria’s squad sought redemption and found it. Abigail Isaac was a standout player, posting a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Next, Nigeria will face Uganda in the semifinals on Friday at 5:00 p.m. (GMT+2), while Cameroon will take on Mali in the other semifinal matchup.

Watch the highlights from the quarter-final between Egypt and Nigeria below.

When a woman struggles to overcome adversity in life, it has far-reaching effects that impact family, community and society at large. This is why The Live Again Foundation, through its numerous programmes, is giving hope to broken, abused and distressed women so they can start afresh, rediscover purpose and begin to rebuild their lives.

Convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi

One such programme — The Live Again Outreach — was held on Saturday, April 27th, 2024 at the Combo Hall, Lagos State Television (LTV), Ikeja. The maiden edition of the outreach attracted over 500 women who have lived through traumatic experiences that have held them captive, making them feel hopeless about the future.

From the young and old, single and married, and separated and divorced women, attendees from diverse walks of life travelled from various states across Nigeria.

My experience, my past and the topics prompted me to attend this program; said Wumi Obanla, one of the participants.

When asked about the goal of this soul-lifting gathering of women, the convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi passionately explained; The purpose of the outreach is to empower women to heal from their painful past, reengineer their mind-set, rebuild their self-esteem and confidence and rediscover their true purpose in life. We want to help women live again in all aspects of their lives she added.

The life-changing event was carefully put together with inspiring presentations from notable speakers and professionals. It also had breakout sessions, medical screenings, massage therapy, makeup sessions, gifts, business grants and legal counsel and advice.

Mind-Shifting and Life-Changing sessions

Cross section of the audience

The curtain-raiser was a deeply moving presentation by the Convener of the outreach titled, “How I began to live again: Turning pain to purpose,” where she recounted her emotional journey from despair to rebirth.

She characterised it by saying,

A lot of women are going through abuse, pain or difficult situation and find it hard to live again. Some of them don’t even have anyone to talk to. They’re afraid of being judged, that nobody will believe them. But I believe them because I’ve been through it.

Dr Catherine Onyejiaka

TEDx speaker, author and communication and professional development coach, Dr Catherine Onyejiaka cranked up the energy with an authoritative and thought-provoking talk on “Finding your voice again.” During her session, she pointed out that,

“There’s something deposited in you that needs to be harnessed that is needed by the world. You need to understand that you’re more than what you think you are.”

Dr Catherine Onyejiaka

Then it was the turn of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) — the organization backed up by law to cater to issues of domestic violence and sexual abuse in Lagos state. The representative of the anti-abuse watchdog introduced the agency and its activities to the audience.

She outlined the rights of women and how the agency helps victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, emphasizing the need to speak up rather than remain lip-sealed, silenced, suppressed and oppressed.

Since one of the goals of the outreach is to help women live again in all aspects of their lives including financially, it was proper to have the next two sessions on monetizing your talents, knowledge and skills delivered by Enifome; and making, managing and multiplying money — delivered by Chinedu Akpunonu.

Here’s what Chinedu had to say about the event;

One thing I know this conference will do for a lot of women is give them hope.

Beyond these powerful sessions, there were also breakout sessions on emotional intelligence, parenting, relationships, marriage and business strategy.

Speakers at the Live Again Outreach

All the sessions were carefully designed to help women rediscover their purpose, boost their confidence and take the first steps towards reclaiming their lives. The attendees can begin to overcome self-doubt and embark on a journey of personal growth and transformation.

A sprinkle of fun
To fire up the already ignited event, the organisers of the outreach partnered with several individuals and organisations to create a fun-filled and supportive experience. The attendees enjoyed free spa and massage therapy, hair makeover, photoshoot sessions and gifts.

They also got free career and legal counselling, resume reviews, and medical screenings and medications. Each participant went home with a Live Again pack which included the 12-Step Guide to Living Again — a transformative book to guide women through the rejuvenating process of living again.

Empowerment with business grants
Aside from the freebies, a total of twenty women received business grants of N100,000 each. One mother got free a business name registration as well as N200,000 to support her business.

This empowerment initiative aims to provide recipients with support to launch or grow their businesses and transform adversities into opportunities for success and financial freedom.

Deborah Aderele, one of the recipients of the business grants described in her own words;

Winning this grant was like… wow! This is just a confirmation that, yes… Deborah… go and start that thing you want to do, go and make it better. The world wants to hear your voice.

Another grant recipient, Victoria Adetutu said,

I didn’t see this coming. I’ve been a volunteer teacher for over 2 years teaching children. I wondered when I’m going to reap the rewards of my work. Today, I can see God at work.

The host and moderator of the outreach, Presh Talker also had this to say;

“This event is not just one of those events where you come to and have plenty of talk. It’s an event that brings more life to all women. And I believe every woman who walked in here today will not go out the same. They’ll live again.”

Participants Refresh and Refuel for the Future
The maiden Live Again outreach exceeded all expectations, delivering a profoundly life-changing experience that made a lasting difference in the lives of the participants.

This landmark event was the trigger the attendees needed to rediscover purpose and find a new meaning to life — a reason to Live Again. They left the programme with a new mindset, a renewed belief in themselves knowing that they belong to a supporting community in the Live Again movement.

On her final thoughts on the impact of the outreach, the Convener of the outreach and Director of the Live Again Foundation, Enifome Ogbimi said;

What I see here is, a multiplier effect of women helping other women live again. Because when you empower a woman, you empower other women. Helping a woman live again is helping a generation to live again.

Beyond the Outreach
The Live Again Foundation holds post-outreach webinars and business strategy classes for women. It has also scheduled mentorship sessions for grant recipients to help with the judicious use of the funds.

The foundation will continue its work in helping women rise from the ashes and live their dreams. To learn more about the works of the Live Again Foundation, check them out on their active social media accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Linkedin.

In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in Northeastern Nigeria, over 239,000 people have been severely impacted by flash floods after the Alau Dam in Konduga LGA burst its banks overnight following heavy rains. The torrential downpour across the region has also caused significant flooding in other areas, including Biu, Chibok, Bama, Dikwa, and Jere LGAs.

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), about 70% of Maiduguri has been submerged by the fast-moving waters. Major city locations such as the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo, the Shehu of Borno’s palace, the state secretariat, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and several residential areas like Bulabulin, Gwange, and Lagos Area have been heavily affected.

“About 70 per cent of the town is already underwater. So, many people are trapped as the flood intensified when people were sleeping; some people woke up to discover that they were inside water,” NEMA spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel, told The PUNCH Newspaper.

This flood has been described as the most devastating in Borno’s history, with many residents comparing it to the last major flood in 1994, but emphasising that this is far worse. Thousands of people have been displaced, forced to seek refuge in schools after losing their homes. The floods have claimed 80% of the animals in the city’s zoo and submerged key city landmarks.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over the disaster and instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to visit the affected areas. In a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Tinubu called for the immediate evacuation of residents and ordered rescue operations to be expedited.

Many of the displaced residents have moved to the Muna IDP camp, already home to more than 50,000 internally displaced persons. Government authorities have reopened former IDP camps, including the Bakasi and Dalori camps, to accommodate evacuees. However, these temporary shelters are already at full capacity. El Miskin camp, which hosts over 7,000 IDPs—half of whom are children—has also been flooded, adding to the humanitarian crisis.

Across Nigeria, floods have claimed more than 200 lives this year and affected over 800,000 people across 29 states, according to data from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). As of 9 September, has the highest number of displaced individuals. Other heavily affected states include Bauchi, Bayelsa, Enugu, Jigawa, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Tens of thousands of hectares of farmland have been destroyed ahead of the harvest season, exacerbating food security concerns amid record spikes in food and fuel prices.

What the Displaced Residents Need

The displaced residents of Maiduguri are in urgent need of necessities, including food, clean water, shelter, and medical care. Protection is a significant concern, especially for unaccompanied children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Immediate assistance is required to prevent disease outbreaks, particularly cholera, in overcrowded shelters.

Intermediate needs include non-food items such as blankets, clothing, hygiene supplies, and cooking equipment.

How You Can Help

 • Donate: Support local and international organisations working in the affected regions by donating money, food, and medical supplies.
 • Spread Awareness: Use your platform to raise awareness about the floods and the urgent needs of the displaced people. Social media, blogs, and community outreach can help gather support.
 • Volunteer: If you are in the region or able to travel, volunteering with relief agencies can make a direct impact.
 • Advocate for Long-term Solutions: Encourage governments and organisations to implement flood control measures, improve drainage systems, and invest in long-term infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
 • Partner with NGOs: Work with non-governmental organisations to coordinate the delivery of essential services and items to affected areas.

The 2024 Summer Olympics may have left many Nigerians disheartened after finishing without a single medal, but the Nigerian Paralympians in Paris had a different message: “Watch us!” Their outstanding performance at the Summer Paralympics showcased resilience, determination, and remarkable achievements, putting Nigeria back on the global map.

Despite a smaller contingent, the Nigerian Paralympians excelled in various fields. Eniola Mariam Bolaji, an 18-year-old badminton player, made history by defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyna in straight sets (21-9, 21-9) to claim a bronze medal. Not only was this Nigeria’s first medal in Paris, but it was also the first-ever badminton medal won by an African player at either the Olympics or Paralympics.

In the women’s javelin event, Flora Ugwunwa continued her winning streak, securing a silver medal with a throw of 19.26m. The 40-year-old Paralympian has now won medals in three consecutive Paralympics, adding this silver to her two previous golds from Rio and Tokyo.

Ogun-born para-athlete Isau Ogunkunle also made Nigeria proud by winning a bronze medal in the men’s class 4 table tennis competition, continuing the country’s tradition of excellence in the sport.

Nigerian powerlifters once again demonstrated their dominance at the Paralympics. Onyinyechi Mark brought home Nigeria’s first gold medal in Paris, setting new records by lifting 146kg, 147kg, and 150kg in her category. Esther Ogechi Nworgu also added to Nigeria’s medal count, securing silver in the women’s up to 41kg powerlifting event.

Bose Omolayo, a veteran of the Paralympic stage, secured her third consecutive podium finish, claiming silver with a 149kg lift. Despite numerous challenges both on and off the field, she stood tall, finishing ahead of Egypt’s Safaa Hassan and behind China’s Han Miayou, who set a new world record with a 154kg lift to take gold.

Closing Nigeria’s memorable Paralympic journey, team captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered a spectacular performance, winning a gold medal in powerlifting and breaking two world records with a staggering 167kg lift. Her victory was a fitting end to Nigeria’s campaign and a crowning achievement for the team’s efforts.

Overall, Nigeria earned seven medals—two gold, three silver, and two bronze—finishing 40th on the Paralympics medal table and 4th in Africa, behind Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have made a spectacular start to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, defeating the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 3-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Super Eagles delivered a powerful performance, highlighted by two second-half goals from Ademola Lookman and substitute Victor Osimhen. Ademola’s late first-half strike gave Nigeria the lead going into the break.

The match saw a dominant display from the home side. Ademola Lookman, who just got nominated for a Ballon d’Or award, scored a brilliant solo goal before halftime. In the second half, Victor Osimhen extended Nigeria’s lead to 2-0 in the 78th minute, with Ademola adding his second goal shortly after to complete the 3-0 victory.

Despite Benin’s efforts to find their rhythm, their first shot on goal only came in the 40th minute, and it was expertly saved by goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

At the previous AFCON in Ivory Coast, Nigeria clinched a silver medal. Now, they’re aiming for another spot in the prestigious continental tournament. Drawn in Group D alongside Benin, Rwanda, and Libya, Nigeria’s next match is against Rwanda at Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday, September 10.

US-based Nigerian designer and creative director of Tesslo, Tessy Oliseh-Amaize, has launched her latest collection, “Africa to the World,” at the 15th anniversary edition of the Ankara Festival in Los Angeles.

The men’s haute couture collection, showcased at the Academy LA on Sunday, September 1, reimagines the Ankara fabric for a global audience.

“My vision is to elevate Ankara into a fabric that transcends cultural borders. I want Ankara outfits to become products that everyone desires to wear, no matter where they are from,” Oliseh-Amaize said in a statement.

“Ankara has become synonymous with Africa, but because of its popularity, it is easy to take the fabric for granted or see it as something you should use as a mere handkerchief, a headwrap, or a muffler. But Ankara is more than that. With this collection, I aim to show the world a side of Ankara they’ve never seen before.”

Oliseh-Amaize, who won Nigeria’s Best Designer Award in 2006, continued, “I want to see someone in Japan confidently wearing Ankara designs, not just because they are stylish, but because they are also functional, comfortable, sophisticated and professionally tailored. Ankara might be seen as just something African, but it can become a global product if it’s embraced by people everywhere. For us at Tesslo, ‘Africa to the World’ isn’t just a tagline, it’s a movement to bring Ankara into every household.”

The new collection blends urban modernity with classic avant-garde styles, drawing inspiration from various African cultural motifs. The designs are influenced by the Guérewol festival of the Wodaabe tribes of Niger and Chad, the regal imagery of the Oba of Benin, the vibrant mmanwu masquerades of southeastern Nigeria, and the rich heritage of Nigeria’s Niger Delta, among others.

Adding to the evening’s glamour was Nigerian-American Hollywood star Folake Olowofoyeku, best known for her role in Bob Hearts Abishola, who co-hosted the event, stunning the audience in a handcrafted Tesslo outfit.

The event, produced by Peter Lentini, also welcomed a host of African Hollywood talent, including co-host actor and comedian Seyi Brown, Sierra Leonean actor; Duain Richmond, actor and producer Kofi Boakye, and President of the African Artists’ Association Francis Onelum, among others.

The hashtag #JusticeForChristiannah has been trending across social media platforms in Nigeria, as the country mourns the tragic passing of Christiannah Idowu, a 21-year-old 300-level student from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB). Christiannah was reportedly murdered by an acquaintance, sparking widespread calls for justice.

On August 19, 2024, Christiannah was declared missing after her mother received a disturbing message from her WhatsApp account. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₦1.5 million, giving her family just 24 hours to pay. According to reports, Christiannah had been on her way from her home in Itaoluwo, Ikorodu, to the University of Lagos in Yaba, where she was completing her industrial training. On the way, she took refuge at the house of Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), whom she knew. Seeking shelter from the rain, she accepted Ayomide’s invitation to stay inside.

Tragically, while at his home, Ayomide attempted to assault Christiannah. When she resisted, he reportedly killed her. Christiannah’s family managed to raise ₦350,000, which Ayomide received through a betting account.

Investigations into the abduction quickly traced the transaction back to Ayomide. By August 29th, authorities confirmed the betting account was linked to him. Police then tracked his phone to his family’s home in Ikorodu, where military personnel from the 174 Battalion arrested him. During the investigation, incriminating evidence, including Christiannah’s phone and bank details, was discovered, alongside email exchanges between Ayomide and Christiannah’s family.

On September 3, 2024, Ayomide confessed to the alleged murder and revealed he had buried Christiannah’s body at his family home. His arrest was officially confirmed today by the spokesperson of the Nigerian Army’s 81 Division, Lt-Col. Olabisi Ayeni.

The sad circumstances surrounding Christiannah Idowu’s passing have sparked national outrage, with Nigerians and celebrities alike using social media to demand #JusticeForChristiannah. The call for justice has only intensified as more details of this horrific crime emerge.

The ever-gorgeous Chalya Shagaya, Director General of the National Institute of Archeology and Museums Studies (NIAMS), graced the illustrious launch of Lagos Canvas in classic style.

Sporting a timeless Deola Sagoe masterpiece she first rocked about 20 years ago, Chalya courted attention all night long. The elegant little black dress is made of 2-toned Aso Oke fabric in the brand’s pioneering style.

Championing sustainability while staying fashionable, Chalya paired the blue-black piece with a neutral-toned facebeat, an elegant turban, pretty bracelets, and a gem-embellished court shoe.

In a heartwarming full circle moment, Chalya reunited with the iconic Nigerian designer of her first-ever purchase from the eponymous Deola Sagoe. She is wearing the same outfit from 2006, and it still fits like a glove! Hit the ▶ button below to watch:

Meanwhile, the illustrious event was aptly themed Made in Lagos and Chalya gave fans a backstory to her moment in the spotlight. On Instagram, she wrote regarding the theme:

I’ll explain. I was conceived in Lagos. And born in Lagos. Lagos Island to be precise. At the Lagos Island Maternity in the early 70s (yes!!! 👀 ).

When I got the invitation for the #LagosCanvas event from @moabudu & the United States Consular General Will Stevens in Lagos, I knew there was no way I could go in my birthday suit (😂) seeing as the event was themed “Made in Lagos”, so I opted for my Deola Sagoe number which I purchased nearly 20 years ago. 2006 to be exact. Obviously made in Lagos by @deolasagoeofficial at the then Odua Creations studio in Lagos. So perfect!! #Vintagegold

Now… little did I know that I would bump into the designer and artist (#DeolaSagoe) herself at the event. Her face lit up as we ‘clocked’ each other once I entered the room. I felt such an instant jolt of energy I’m wearing her art and she is appreciating said art on me?

From BellaNaija Archives, take a look at Chalya in 2009 at the ARISE: African Promise Collective event in New York, three (3) years after purchasing her timeless piece:

Over 250,000 Benefit from Ounje Eko, Alaafia Eko as Eko Cares Campaign Wraps Up Across 6 Health Districts https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/09/eko-cares-initiative-2024/ Wed, 04 Sep 2024 18:29:19 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1670474 Written by the Eko Cares Initiative

The post Over 250,000 Benefit from Ounje Eko, Alaafia Eko as Eko Cares Campaign Wraps Up Across 6 Health Districts appeared first on BellaNaija - Showcasing Africa to the world. Read today!.

]]>

The Eko Care Initiative, spearheaded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Administration, has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the lives of Lagosians through the successful implementation of its Alaafia Eko Healthcare Intervention and the Ounje Eko Food Security scheme.

Both programmes are integral components of the broader Eko Cares Initiative, designed to provide relief in key areas such as health, nutrition, transportation, education, and agriculture, to bring relief and boost the overall quality of life for Lagosians.

Alaafia Eko: Comprehensive Healthcare for Lagosians
The Alaafia Eko programme has successfully delivered accessible and quality healthcare services across the six health districts in Lagos, significantly boosting public health by providing health insurance and free medical outreach. In Phase 1, there were four locations per district while Phase 2 had two locations per district.

These locations were strategically selected within the 6 districts to maximise coverage and accessibility, ensuring that more residents could benefit. The initiative offered a wide range of services, including general consultations, maternal and child healthcare, immunisations, and health education.

By the conclusion of its latest phase in August 2024, Alaafia Eko had served over 19,000 residents, providing much-needed medical care to both the young and the elderly. More than 8,000 individuals received eyeglasses, with many beneficiaries being over the age of 45.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with beneficiaries expressing their excitement, offering prayers, and showing deep gratitude for the care they received. The joy and relief were palpable, as many residents were thankful for the opportunity to access free healthcare services that would have otherwise been out of reach.

Ounje Eko: Ensuring Food Security Amid Economic Challenges
The Ounje Eko scheme is a people-focused intervention to address hunger and ensure food security across Lagos State, especially amidst rising living costs. The scheme which recently entered its second phase, Ounje Eko continues to provide essential food items to vulnerable households, at hugely discounted rates, making a significant impact on vulnerable communities. With over 250,000 beneficiaries already reached, the programme is making staple food items more accessible and affordable for Lagosians.

Ounje Eko operates through three key components: direct food distribution to vulnerable households, to provide staple foods like garri, beans, and rice; the Ounje Eko Free Meal Programme, designed to ensure that the most vulnerable individuals in the state have access to at least one free meal per day; and the Ounje Eko Sunday Markets, where special markets set up across Lagos offer food items at a 25% discount to ease the financial burden on residents.

The Sunday Market scheme has been a game-changer, being the most far-reaching and particularly popular amongst Lagosians, with discounted food items available at 58 strategic locations across the state.

The success of the first phase of Ounje Eko is clear from the impressive milestones achieved, with 125,560 kg of rice, 43,637 kg of beans, 50,028 kg of garri, 222,881 loaves of bread, and 173,480 crates of eggs distributed. The numbers reveal the great impact of the food initiative on the lives of Lagosians.

Expansion and Ongoing Support of Ounje Eko Intervention
With the successful conclusion of Phase 1, Phase 2 aims to expand the reach of Ounje Eko Sunday markets, potentially opening more locations to serve even more Lagosians. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration says it remains committed to maintaining the 25% discount on all food items sold at these markets, reinforcing its dedication to boosting food security, public health, and economic stability.

As Ounje Eko’s second phase rolls out, residents are encouraged to take advantage of these discounted food markets. These initiatives demonstrate the state government’s commitment to the welfare of Lagosians, providing tangible support amid soaring living costs and inflation.

Mamador, a leading premium food brand in Nigeria in the Vegetable Oil and Spread segments, has called on Nigerian women to give utmost priority to their wholesome health and maximize the opportunities available with their financial resources.

This was the submission of the Head of Marketing, PZ Wilmar, Chioma Mbanugo who delivered the welcome remarks during the 5th edition of its annual August Meeting held on Friday, August 30, 2024.

Speaking on the theme titled “Nourish to Flourish: Elevating Health and Wealth”, Mbanugo noted that the annual August Women meeting by Mamador is not only a communal gathering but a notable platform to celebrate women for their roles and contributions to society.

She described the August Women meeting as a laudable gesture that attests to the power of togetherness.

“As a brand, Mamador is committed to the financial and physical well-being of Nigerian women nationwide. The old saying that ‘Health is Wealth’ encapsulates our presence here and explains why we should prioritize our health while we try to build wealth. We appreciate everyone for joining us to celebrate Nigerian women who regardless of the limitations, or barriers are the epitome of diligence, resilience, and relentless quest for success,” she said.

Speaking on the topic, ‘Parenting in this Generation’, certified Family and Parenting Coach, Sandra Oluwadare explained that women owe it a duty as shapers and moulders of destinies to be intentional in the way and manner they raise kids. Oluwadare emphasized the need for women to take care of themselves to enable them to confront threats that can hinder them from effectively parenting their kids.

She stated that with the right vision, values, and system and nurturing connection for bonding and influence, women can deliver on their roles as effective parents amidst threats such as digital overload, online safety, social media influence, changing family dynamics, social and academic pressure, and work-life integration among others.

Lending his voice on the topic titled “Health and Food Choices”, health influencer and medical doctor, Egemba Chinonso, popularly known as Aproko Doctor stated that women must endeavour to eat or consume healthy foods if they want to live a healthy life.

Also speaking, award-winning dancer and fitness coach, Kaffy Shafau remarked that women’s minds are critical in keeping healthy lifestyles, urging them to keep fit and take care of their mental health.

Speaking on the topic “Wealth and the Woman”, finance and wealth coach, Sola Adesakin tasked women to understand their priorities and map them out according to their finances.

According to Adesakin, 50% of their earnings should be invested in what they consider necessary while 30% and 20% should be channelled toward savings and personal care and development respectively.

Commenting on the topic “You are a Business”, certified financial education instructor, Tomie Balogun stressed the need for aspiring women entrepreneurs to have a good understanding of business structure and figures as these remain the foundation for sustainable growth, decision-making, and overall success of any business.

“We need to surround ourselves with individuals who understand the challenges we face and can offer mentorship. As business owners, challenges can be powerful motivators for growth, innovation, and success while setbacks come as a learning experience,” Balogun said.

In her remarks, Veteran Nollywood actress, Ngozi Nwosu charged women to be ready and determined to confront challenges that may arise in the cause of their career or their family life.

At the end of the elevator pitch which saw participation from different women entrepreneurs, Vennile Pads emerged winner while Maka Marvi and Farhms Food and Sauce Global came second and third respectively.

The winner of the elevator pitch received a two million naira cash grant while the first runner-up and second runner-up got one million naira and five hundred thousand naira respectively.

The overall winner of the Exam Success competition, Marilyn Nwachukwu, proudly holds the grand prize.

When Marilyn, the winner of the Airtel-Roducate Exam Success Competition, entered the competition, she probably didn’t expect to win ₦500,000 for herself and her school. The BECE Exam Success Competition was launched to help students in Lagos State private schools prepare for the Basic Certificate Examination 2024.

This initiative was a collaboration between Roducate, Airtel, and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), using the Airtel-Roducate Exam Success Packs.

The first round of the competition took place online across Lagos on June 18, 2024, despite the rainy Saturday. Over 300 participants from more than 10 LGAs in Lagos logged onto Roducate from the comfort of their homes. By the end of this round, 33 first-round winners emerged from 20 LGAs, each receiving a cash prize of ₦20,000.

The grand finale of the maiden edition of the BECE Exam Success Competition was held on Friday, July 19, 2024. Our 33 winners, accompanied by their parents, guardians, teachers, and school proprietors, filled the hall with anticipation and excitement.

Over ₦1 million was up for grabs. The final assessment was also conducted online, with students logging into Roducate to complete their assessments, hoping to emerge as the overall winner.

In less than 10 minutes after the competition, the results were collated on Roducate, and the top 3 winners were identified.

Marilyn Nwachukwu of Mbari Mbayo School, representing Lagos Mainland Local Government Area, emerged as the overall winner. Ifiok Inyang of D`Cherub Schools, representing Eti-Osa Local Government Area, secured the first runner-up position, while Kelechi Agu of Tombey Schools, representing Kosofe Local Government Area, took the second runner-up position.

Fostering Roducate’s belief that quality education is a result of community effort, these students won not only for themselves but also for their communities. An additional ₦50,000 was awarded to the parents and teachers of the top winners, and ₦500,000 was given to the overall winner’s school.

L.R. Okachukwu Nwachukwu, the overall winner’s guardian; Femisola Awosika, Group Chief Executive Officer, Roducate; Marilyn Nwachukwu, overall competition winner; Alaka Yusuf Lukman Owolabi, NAPPS Chairman (Lagos State Chapter); and Guruman Iwundu, Head VAS and Carrier Services, Airtel Nigeria.

The success of the BECE Competition’s maiden edition highlighted the need for more such initiatives to support and reward students’ excellent performance. It was undoubtedly a triumph and a testament to the importance of community involvement in education.

The Bankers’ Committee has announced the completion of the restoration and upgrading of facilities at the National Theatre. The renovation commenced in July 2021 following approval by the Federal Government and the subsequent handover of the national edifice to the Bankers’ Committee.

The Committee embarked on this restoration to unlock the immense potential in the creative sector for the teeming population of Nigerian youth. The new-look National Theatre, when operational, will create jobs, generate income, and grow foreign exchange earnings, thereby becoming a creative and entertainment hub providing much-needed community spaces for Nigerian youth to explore and thrive.

The renovation works cover different spaces, including the 4,000-seater main bowl, over 3,000-seater banquet hall, 2-nos. exhibition halls, 3-nos. cinemas, VIP spaces, actors’ changing rooms, industrial kitchen, over 300 new toilet cubicles, clinic, fire station, lobbies within the four National Theatre entrances and extensive roof repairs.

Speaking during a tour of the monument in Lagos on Wednesday, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Group representing Bankers’ Committee, Abubakar Suleiman disclosed that at the commencement of the project,

We were shocked at the scale of the work that needed to be done, but we were also impressed by the possibilities that it represented. This is one of the largest scaled projects of its kind anywhere on the continent.

The renovation of the National Theatre by the Bankers Committee showcases what is possible with the power of patriotism and collective responsibility on the part of the private sector in partnering with the Federal and Lagos state governments, to reignite hope and revive some of our national monuments and assets. He added that the standard to which the edifice has been restored is world class.

The facilities were upgraded to match with the best standards of theatre and performance in the world. The upgrading includes the replacement of the entire Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, upgrade of the fire safety standards, power, replacement of the water supply and sewage systems, upgrading of interior design with the installations of Audio Video Lighting (AVL), world stage engineering system, 17 passenger lifts, solar power, new furniture for spaces and restoration of artworks including those on the internal wall panels and the building façade.

External works supporting the National Theatre were also carried out in the refurbishment of the 3 entrance gatehouses, constructions of 4 themed landscapes, car park block (250 cars), the ring road, and installation of external street lightings and CCTV cameras.
Speaking during the tour, Kafilat Araoye, Managing Director Lotus Bank also representing Bankers Committee, described the renovation of the National Theatre as a rebirth of a National Treasure and a restoration of our Culture and Heritage;

We are very excited about the completion of the renovation and upgrade of facilities of the National Theatre, we are indeed very proud of the work we have done here.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu in his statement said that;

Upon completion, the Wole Soyinka Center for Culture and the Creative Arts (National Theatre) will not only be for arts, tourism and culture, but will also provide a venue for the international community to convene for conferences and enjoy world class performances.

The National Arts Theatre was constructed by the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. The completion coincided with hosting the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) in January 1977.

The 2024 Summer Paralympics officially commenced in Paris with an opening ceremony at the Place de la Concorde. This year’s 17th edition of the Paralympic Games will see over 4,000 athletes across the globe competing in 549 medal events spread across 22 sports over 11 days, from August 28 to September 8. Nigeria proudly participated in the parade of athletes, led by Lauritta Onye, a shot put athlete, who served as the nation’s flagbearer.

Team Nigeria will compete with 24 athletes in four sports: Para-athletics, Para-badminton, Para-powerlifting, and Para-table tennis. The breakdown includes five athletes in athletics, two in badminton, nine in powerlifting, and eight in table tennis. This diverse group of athletes is determined to build on Nigeria’s rich legacy at the Paralympic Games.

Nigeria has been a dominant force since its debut at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. Over the years, the country has amassed 80 medals—40 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze. The athletes, alongside seven coaches and five medical personnel, are focused on continuing this tradition of excellence in Paris.

As the Games officially begin, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, John Owan Enoh, sent a goodwill message to the team, urging them to make a statement of excellence and determination. He emphasised that the Paris 2024 Paralympics is more than just another sporting event; it’s an opportunity for Nigeria to restore its pride on the global stage.

The movie, set to debut in cinemas on September 13th, is already being hailed by film critics as an inspiring and hard-hitting story, marking Nigeria’s first foray into the world of football-themed cinema.

‘When Love Strikes’ was produced in association with Get Reel Production owned Breath of Life actor Eku Edewor and features a star-studded cast led by AMVCA-winning actor Osas Ighodaro and rising talent Natse Jemide, best known for his role in the Netflix hit series Far From Home.

It also features stand-out performances from an ensemble cast, including Bimbo Akintola, Zubby Michael, Sunshine Rosman, Jimmie Akinsola, Vine Olugu, Chuks Joseph, Demola Adedoyin, Taye Arimoro, and Suo Chapele.

The electrifying trailer, which unveils breathtaking snippets from the movie ahead of its much-awaited cinematic release, follows a teaser that sent Nigerian moviedom into fever-pitch anticipation.

The film is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Adeoluwa Owu (Captain Degzy), the co-director of the record-breaking A Tribe Called Judah, and boasts a heavy-weight production crew alongside Inkblot co-founders Chinaza Onuzo, Zulumoke Oyibo and Damola Ademola, who also serve as Executive Producers.

When Love Strikes was co-written by Chinaza Onuzo and Joy Bewaji, the acclaimed screenwriter of A Weekend To Forget, from a story by Damola Ademola, Eku Edewor, and Bewaji herself. The film was shot in Lagos and Ikenne in Ogun State with support and sponsorship from Remo Stars FC, Bet9ja, and Pepsi

Inkblot co-founder Damola Ademola has hinted that people should prepare for an unforgettable experience when it debuts in cinemas across Nigeria on September 13.

“‘When Love Strikes’ is a film that explores the universal appeal of football and the true meaning of ‘the beautiful game’ through the eyes of a gifted young player. This story is very close to my heart, and it was important that we celebrated football and what it means to the Nigerian audience while telling a story full of heart.

We are so pleased with the work done by Degzy and the entire cast and crew, and we are confident that this film will resonate deeply with audiences of all ages, everywhere.” Ademola added.

BellaNaija and The She Tank have launched #HerMoneyHerPower campaign to spark a national dialogue and positively shift mindsets about women’s economic power in Nigeria through the power of media and entertainment.

With each passing day, the significance of women having economic power in shaping an inclusive and equitable society becomes more evident. As of last year, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) contributed to 48% of Nigeria’s GDP and women account for 41% of ownership of these businesses.

Did you also know that not only could narrowing the gender gap in labour markets increase GDP in developing economies by almost 8%, closing the gender gap fully could lift GDP in these countries by 23% on average. Promoting women’s financial inclusion by closing the gender financing gap could also add US$1.1 trillion to the global economy by 2030.

This shows that women having economic power is just a matter of equity, it is also of economic importance. When women have control over their finances, they not only invest in themselves, they can also support their families, invest in their communities and promote a more prosperous country. This means that everyone must be promoters of a more equitable society where women have access to resources and infrastructure that will boost their economic power.

How Do We Come In?

Over the next three (3) months, BellaNaija and The She Tank will engage in a series of conversations and discussions centred around women’s economic power, its role in promoting gender equality in our society, and its importance in building a more equitable country, leveraging the ongoing Big Brother Naija reality show.

We believe in the power of the media to spark conversations, shape narrative, change thought-processes and mould society. The Big Brother Naija reality show house is a social experiment, giving us a front-row seat to observe how men and women interact in a confined space and offers valuable insight into issues like women’s economic power, which are central to our campaign.

Big Brother Naija Season 9: “No Loose Guard”

With 10 (ten) pairs left in the Big Brother Naija ‘No Loose Guard’ house, we will engage the housemates in a task designed to further demonstrate the importance of women’s economic power, as part of our campaign. So far, the ten pairs have not ‘lost guard’ in the house, let’s see if with this task, they will still maintain their ‘guard’ and composure.

Get Ready to See Your Favourite Entertainers!

From content creators, actors, musicians, influencers, artists and your favourite entertainers, we’ll feature women and men who will share their personal journeys, experiences and perspectives related to (women’s) economic power.

Your faves will have conversations and discussions about women, money, community, career and economy; building a world where women have access to the resources and systems that will create prosperity for them; and harnessing economic power to create positive change.

Community Engagement

We’re taking this conversation to the streets! Our vox pop series will feature everyday Nigerians, questioning their stance on women’s economic power and getting their opinions on how to build a more equitable country where women can thrive economically.

How to Be a Part of #HerMoneyHerPower Campaign

By launching the #HerMoneyHerPower campaign, we’ll share inspiring stories, and explore the intersection of gender equality, finance, women, community, and career. We aim to inspire women to take control of their finances, challenge harmful stereotypes, and advocate for policies that support women’s economic power, leveraging the power of media and entertainment.

To join the conversation and stay updated on all #HerMoneyHerPower content, follow @bellanaija and @theshetank across all social media platforms. Also follow the hashtag: #HerMoneyHerPower.

Be a part of the series by engaging with our content across our social media pages (X, Instagram, WhatsApp Channels, Facebook and TikTok). If you see us around, feel free to be a part of our vox pop. Watch our task in the Big Brother Naija house, answer our questions on social media, vote in our polls, drop a comment or two and spread the word.

Get ready to be inspired, entertained, and informed!

Discover how BAMA Mayonnaise Enhances Nigerian Fusion Cuisine, Harmonising Traditional and Modern Flavours https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/08/bama-mayonnaise-nigerian-fusion-cuisine/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 13:45:24 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1669647 by Tumininu Ojelabi Hassan

The post Discover how BAMA Mayonnaise Enhances Nigerian Fusion Cuisine, Harmonising Traditional and Modern Flavours appeared first on BellaNaija - Showcasing Africa to the world. Read today!.

]]>
The battle between traditional and modern culinary has been a long one. While most Nigerian homes have specific meals they take for breakfast and meals that are considered dinner, there’s a wide claim that Nigerian cuisine is losing its touch.

Some will say that most Nigerians are now accepting modern cuisine as a superior alternative to traditional culinary, this claim is debatable.

Bama mayonnaise’s versatility and creamy texture make it a perfect addition to Nigerian delicacies, as it enhances the flavours and textures of dishes from various Nigerian cultures.

Nigerian cuisine, a mosaic of various ethnic traditions, is celebrated for its rich and diverse flavours. This appreciation of culinary tradition varies widely across different regions in the country.

From the nationally renowned smoky jollof rice to the Efo riro of the West and the delectable Afang soup of the South, each dish tells a story of the culture and history of its people.

Nigerian cuisine enjoys a cultured following across the globe. From North America to Europe and South America, Nigerian dishes are known for their spices and methodological way of preparing them. However, as globalisation continues to influence culinary practices, a new fusion cuisine that combines traditional Nigerian flavours with modern culinary techniques and ingredients has emerged.

This new trend has led to the introduction of more delectables into Nigerian cuisine with meals such as sandwiches, shawarma, and salads including some combinations like Gizdodo Croquettes.

To achieve the fusion of these new combinations, several ingredients have now become the go-to in making ‘trado-modern’ meals in Nigeria. One such ingredient is the mayonnaise with its creamy texture and mild flavour that make it a perfect base for a wide variety of dishes. Mayonnaise, while originally a French condiment, has now become a global kitchen staple.

Mayonnaise has rapidly become a thing in modern Nigerian cuisine. Its versatility has made it a popular choice for quick and easy meals like sandwiches, a relatively new concept in the country.

A prime example of this fusion is the cheese chicken sandwich. With the creamy texture of Bama mayonnaise on Agege bread, and layering in ingredients like chicken breast, eggs, and vegetables, a unique and satisfying taste experience is created.

This sandwich perfectly blends traditional Nigerian tastes with contemporary culinary trends creating a flavour that is both familiar and innovative..

Infusing mayonnaise with traditional spices like ata rodo (scotch bonnet peppers) can create a spicy mayonnaise sauce that compliments a variety of snacks and appetisers. This sauce can be used as a dip for akara (bean cakes), dodo (fried plantains), kosai dankali (northern Nigerian fried potatoes), or fried yam (dundun), adding a creamy yet spicy kick to these traditional favourites.

Also, adding Bama mayonnaise to the Ncha abacha mixture adds extra creaminess and flavour to the meal, enhancing the dish’s appeal. Abacha, also known as African salad, is a popular dish from the eastern part of Nigeria, prepared with dried and shredded cassava, and ingredients like Ncha abacha, ehuru, ukpaka, utazi leaf, palm oil, pepper, and ground crayfish.

Taliya Hausa, also known as local pasta made with ingredients like scotch bonnet pepper, daddawa, palm oil, and tomatoes can also be elevated with Bama mayonnaise. Similarly, native spaghetti and native jollof rice, often prepared with smoked hake fish (panla fish), ponmo, scent leaf (efinrin), dried fish, and eggs, can be enriched with Bama mayonnaise, paired with well-marinated mayo steak or vegetable salad.

In Nigerian fusion cuisine, mayonnaise enhances traditional dishes, offering a unique twist that appeals to modern palates. This versatile condiment bridges the gap between traditional and modern flavours, adding a creamy twist to beloved Nigerian dishes.

However, among the various brands of mayonnaise, Bama mayonnaise is the most preferred choice among Nigerian consumers.

Traditional Nigerian flavours fused with modern ingredients like mayonnaise offer an additional taste to the average Nigerian palate, improving the dynamic nature of culinary traditions. It also reflects a willingness of Nigerians to embrace new influences while still honouring the roots of Nigerian cuisine.

This does not translate to Nigerians accepting modern cuisine as a superior alternative to traditional culinary against speculated beliefs.

Bama mayonnaise’s versatility and creamy texture make it a perfect addition to Nigerian delicacies, as it enhances the flavours and textures of dishes from various Nigerian cultures.

Here’s the Ultimate Guide to Preparing a Tasty Nigerian Jollof With Gino Party Jollof https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/08/nigerian-jollof-with-gino-party-jollof/ Sun, 25 Aug 2024 13:44:27 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1669640 By Dami Lawal

The post Here’s the Ultimate Guide to Preparing a Tasty Nigerian Jollof With Gino Party Jollof appeared first on BellaNaija - Showcasing Africa to the world. Read today!.

]]>
When hosting guests or Nigerian parties, jollof rice is an undeniable superstar. And let’s face it, one of the things people are looking forward to at your event is tasting that party Jollof.

You can have the best music, the fanciest decorations, and the coolest crowd, but if your jollof rice doesn’t “slap”, that’s an impact that leaves a lasting impression.

Whether cooking for just the family or preparing a big batch for a party, your jollof rice needs to be spot on. Achieving that perfect Jollof flavour isn’t as hard as it seems—one key to getting that smoky, party-perfect taste lies in choosing the right ingredients and following the proper process.

Let’s start with the basics. The base of your jollof is like the foundation of a house—get it right, and everything else falls into place. Using the right pepper mixture and tomato paste creates the perfect base for the meal.

Opting for Gino Party Jollof paste is the secret sauce that adds both a great taste and look to the meal. Gino Party Jollof Tomato Mix is a convenient and easy-to-use seasoning mix perfect for cooking Nigerian jollof rice. It is made with a blend of spices and herbs, including tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, ginger, and other traditional Nigerian spices.

Now to prepare the meal, start by sautéing your onions, choice spices, and the paste, and in no time the aroma that fills the kitchen will be strong enough to convince you that you are on the right track to making a banging Jollof rice. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently until the paste darkens.

This step is crucial because it intensifies the flavours, giving your Jollof that rich, smoky taste everyone craves.

Pour in your blended pepper mix and let it simmer. For an extra chicken-flavoured taste, consider adding some chicken stock if available, and let cook until the oil begins to float on top—that’s your sign that the base is ready.

Add water to the pot, but be careful not to overdo it. Too much water can turn your Jollof into a soggy mess, and no one wants that. Once the water is in, add your parboiled rice and stir to ensure the rice is evenly coated with the sauce.

For that authentic Nigerian party Jollof taste, toss in some bay leaves or scented leaves. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and reduce the heat to low. Let the rice steam properly, soaking up all those rich flavours. Avoid stirring too often; just let it do its thing.

Once the rice is cooked and the grains are separate, fluffy, and slightly smoky, you know you have nailed it. Serve your Jollof rice hot, and watch as your guests dig in with smiles. Trust us, Gino Party Jollof Tomato Mix has worked its magic, and taken your Jollof rice to Harvard.

To create that perfect combination meal, you can consider pairing this with a properly marinated chicken or beef, adding BAMA mayonnaise as a marinating ingredient to make the chicken incredibly moist and packed with flavour.

Now top it all with Coleslaw consisting of fresh veggies and a bit of Mayonnaise to make it creamy and a glass of chilled fruit juice.

A bill to repeal the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act), a law designed to curb gender-based violence in Nigeria, has advanced to the second reading in the Senate. The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, which is expected to report back within six weeks.

Senator Jibrin Isah of the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing Kogi East, sponsored the bill, which was initially proposed in 2022. He argues that repealing the current law will allow for amendments to address its perceived flaws, as it is not comprehensive enough in its present form.

“Going through the provisions of the Act, it is obvious that it is plagued by substantial and drafting challenges. This underscores the necessity for a holistic reform of the Act to bring the provisions in line with the realities of societal change and drafting standards to effective dispensation of justice,” the senator stated.

Some of his concerns highlighted in the Act:

 • Gender Bias: Originally focused on protecting women, leading to perceived gender bias despite later revisions to include gender-neutral language.
 • Drafting Issues: The Act has significant drafting challenges, making it difficult to align with modern legal standards and societal changes.
 • Inadequate Punishments: The penalties prescribed, including fines and imprisonment, are seen as too lenient and fail to deter offenders effectively.
 • Rape Definition: The definition of rape in the Act lacks clarity, particularly regarding consent and its manipulation through fraud or undue influence.
 • Victim Compensation: The Act is criticized for its focus on penal measures, with inadequate provisions for compensating victims of violence.
 • Jurisdictional and Terminology Confusion: Issues like ambiguous jurisdictional language and the use of outdated or derogatory terms create potential legal complications.
 • Outdated References: The Act includes outdated references to repealed legislation, reflecting a lack of currentness in the document.

With this repeal, Jibrin Isah seeks to introduce the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Bill, 2024, aimed at eliminating violence in both private and public life, prohibiting all forms of violence against persons, and providing maximum protection and effective remedies for victims while ensuring the punishment of offenders.

The VAPP Act 2015

Before leaving office in 2015, former President, Goodluck Jonathan signed the VAPP Act into law. The Act was enacted to prohibit all forms of violence against persons in private and public life, providing maximum protection for victims and ensuring offenders are punished.

The bill was originally passed in 2013 and became law on May 28, 2015. However, as of March 2022, Partners West Africa Nigeria reported that only 19 out of Nigeria’s 36 states, along with the Federal Capital Territory, had domesticated the VAPP Act, and only five state Houses of Assembly had fully passed the legislation.

Key Provisions of the VAPP Act 2015:

 • Harmful Traditional Practices: Criminalises practices that violate the rights of women, girls, or any person, including harmful widowhood practices, denial of inheritance rights, female genital mutilation (FGM), female circumcision, and forced marriage.
 • Other Forms of Violence: The Act bans various forms of violence, including physical injury, placing someone in fear of injury, forced conduct or sexual acts, sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, forced eviction, emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse, abandonment, and attacks with chemical or biological substances.

Senator Jibrin Isah’s bill now only requires one more reading before it is put to a vote, raising concerns among Nigerians who believe repealing the VAPP Act would undermine the progress made in human rights protections. Many argue that an amendment, rather than a full repeal, would be a more effective approach.

What Nigerians are saying about the bill:

Nigerian-Afropop jewel, Guchi, whose records have garnered hundreds of millions of streams across platforms since her breakout single, “Jennifer”, hit the airwaves in February 2021 is set to release a mind-blowing summer anthem titled “No Touching”.

“No Touching” is the point where reinvented Guchi meets classic Guchi. While maintaining the familiar theme of love, she delivers yet another fantastic perspective on the effect of a certain romantic connection. The track raises questions about the persistence of affection without sexual intimacy and the role of loyalty in maintaining a relationship.

“Her originality and stagecraft will give her an edge over other emerging music stars” – Vanguard

It is a fanfare of appreciation, confirmation of commitment, and assurance, all whipped into this less-than-three-minute vibe.

A standout feature of “No Touching” is its playful nod to James Brown’s 1964 classic pop hit “I Got You (I Feel Good),” with Guchi cleverly incorporating the iconic phrase, singing:

“I for come pull up on you when I want to, paranranranran na your love dey make me feel good.”

Produced by hitmaker Tuzi, “No Touching” stands as a resounding testament to Guchi’s exceptional talent and unwavering ambition, with its striking beats, enchanting background piano, and an irresistible hook, this track serves as an extraordinary summer anthem like no other.

Guchi has been a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. The reinvented Guchi presents this record as a tip of what to expect on her forthcoming project.

About Guchi:
Since her emergence in 2019, Nigerian singer and songwriter Guchi has been one of Africa’s most elegant Afropop artists. She gained recognition after the release of her debut single, “No Be Jazzy”, succeeded by “Addicted” which was released later that year, followed by “Closer” and in October 2020, she released “I am Guchi”; a 5-track EP.

Fast forward to February 2021, she released “Jennifer”, which amassed staggering over 100 million streams across platforms and spawned the viral TikTok challenge and was re-released in June 2021 in a re-mixed version featuring the Tanzanian singer Ravanny.

In October 2021, “Benzema”, was titled for French footballer Karim Benzema, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top Triller Global Chart. In 2022, she was featured on Rayvanny’s “Sweet” and in March released “Shattered”.

To end 2022 on a brighter note, she blessed her audience with “Purple Diary”; a 6-track EP. Guchi has firmly established herself as a dominant force in the music industry, with chart-topping hits, alongside her collaborations with Mega-stars like Yemi Alade and Zlatan which further validated her exceptional talent whilst getting nominated for Headies, Afrima, and Prestige Entertainment Award, in which she won.

Stay tuned for more music to come from Guchi later this year.

The act of preparing and sharing food is a powerful ritual, binding people in ways that words alone cannot. Beyond being a mere source of nourishment, food serves as a powerful medium for connecting people, preserving traditions, and supporting local economies.

This is why in their latest issue, the Lost In Lagos Plus Magazine decided to embark on a discourse that delves deep into the profound role food plays in fostering community and social cohesion across Nigeria and Africa.

“It’s always been more than sustenance; it’s a powerful connector for families, uniting them through flavours, traditions, and memories. It is in the street sculleries, communal kitchens, bustling markets, and Sunday rice on the dining tables of families that the essence of culture is preserved and passed down through generations,” Elvis Osifo shares in his editor’s note.

In this issue, you will find voices and contributions of chefs, community leaders, local farmers, and food influencers, in a bid to inspire a greater appreciation for the ways in which food not only nourishes the body but also builds bridges between diverse groups of people.

Unsure of where to start? Check out their list of ‘10 Flavours from Cultures across Nigeria to try in Lagos’ and their ‘Top 5 Spots to Grab Abuja’s Favourite Street Foods.’ Obiefule Britty is using food to preserve cultural traditions and Chef Charles Edet is putting smiles on the faces of members of his community.

Opeyemi Famakin is using strong criticism to influence the future of Nigeria Cuisine, and Ade Owoseni is using food and media to promote cross-continental cultural exchange. Peggy Oseyende is dedicated to meet Abuja’s rising protein needs and Motunrayo Kareem has concerns about Africa’s bread intake.

Serving a déjà vu of her global namesake hit track with Wizkid, Naija’s star girl Tems covers the latest fashion issue of ESSENCE.

The award-winning Nigerian singer-songwriter, who just completed her Born in The Wild tour, looks every bit stunning in a golden satin headwrap, her face flawlessly glammed with her signature facebeat — straight 90s brow, cocoa-lined glossy lips, poppin’ eyes and a fabulously irresistible gaze — on the September/October issue.

You should be yourself even if something else is expected of you.

— Tems

She sits with fashion editor and the first black woman to style a Vogue cover, Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, to discuss more than style and music. Tems unpacks staying true to herself while navigating the pressures of fame and building the life she wants.

You win, automatically, when you are yourself, no matter what that looks like. That’s why there’s variety. We’re different and are not all meant to be the same. And I know there’s a standard, but there shouldn’t be one.

There shouldn’t be a standard of what people should dress like if they’re artists, or what people should dress like if they’re women. I just feel like we’re all unique. There shouldn’t be a requirement. That’s what I mean by standard. There shouldn’t be a requirement or some kind of expectation that you dress a certain way.

I’m just a girl. I can’t wake up every morning thinking about what people expect of me. The better question is: What is it that I expect of myself? What is it that God expects of me? Why did I wake up, and why was I born into this world?

Let’s start there, rather than thinking about other human beings. Nobody has it figured out. You have to live your life in a way that is real.

— Tems

According to ESSENCE, “Karefa-Johnson’s groundbreaking role as the first Black woman to style a Vogue cover, paired with Tems’s rapid ascent in the music industry, highlights the unique challenges and triumphs that trailblazing women experience.

As the two share and connect on the specifics of their journeys, they reveal the resilience that propels Black and diasporic women forward, inspiring us to follow our own paths with similar courage and passion.”

I just want to know where that impulse to protect that identity came from. Ways in which you lean into showing up as a Nigerian woman. Ways in which that is successful in your fashion.

— Gabriella Karefa-Johnson

I feel like now, in the world, everybody wears many different things from different places. We’re not always wearing our traditional clothing that we’re used to wearing, from where we came from. But it doesn’t change who we are.

I’m always going to be Nigerian. You have to show up as who you really are, in your blood. I know my culture: I’m Yoruba. And I know—if I was to get married tomorrow, I know the attire that we’re all wearing as a family. And anything that has to do with representing Nigeria always needs to reflect that.

As a Nigerian, I feel emotional, which is what I think art should be. Art is emotion expressed.

— Tems

The Miss Universe Nigeria pageant is back for its 2024 edition, following the success of last year’s event. The organisers have announced that this year’s winner will receive ₦10 million in cash along with other prizes, emphasising the pageant’s commitment to empowering women.

This year, 25 contestants, including newcomer Chidimma Adetshina, will represent different states across Nigeria. Last year’s winner, Mitchel Ihezue from Imo State, went on to represent Nigeria at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador. The 2024 winner will similarly represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November, while the runner-up will participate in the Miss Supranational pageant.

Arthur Ngwube, Brand Manager of Silverbird Group, unveiled the official theme for this year’s competition, ‘Digital Divas.’ He said this theme reflects the growing significance of digital presence and influence, urging the delegates to leverage technology, social media, and digital platforms in their journey toward the crown.

Anthony Abraham, the Camp Coordinator, shared details about the activities lined up for the delegates during their one-week stay at Festival Hotel Festac. These activities are designed to challenge and enhance the contestants’ skills in various areas:

 • Pitch for Business Ideas: Delegates will present innovative business ideas, fostering entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.
 • Fashion Show: This event will allow delegates to showcase their style and fashion sense, highlighting the creativity of Nigerian fashion brands.
 • Tea Party: A refined social event aimed at promoting networking and building relationships among delegates and stakeholders.

Voting has officially begun, allowing the public to cast their votes for their favourite contestant as many times as they wish. The voting process will remain open until the eve of the event on August 30, 2024, engaging the public in selecting the next Miss Universe Nigeria.

L-R: Business Development Manager, inDrive Nigeria, Timothy Oladiemji; Driver Acquisition Supervisor, inDrive Nigeria, Catherine Akindele; Winner, doXgetY initiative, Taofeek Olatunji and Branch Manager, Lagos, Innoson Group of Companies, Charles Chukwuma during the grand finale of the inDrive’s doXgetY initiative held in Lagos today

inDrive, a global mobility and urban services platform, celebrated the culmination of its highly successful doXgetY initiative with a grand finale event in Surulere, Lagos, where exceptional drivers were rewarded with brand-new IVM cars. This event marked the conclusion of a campaign that has significantly impacted the lives and earnings of drivers in Nigeria, further reinforcing inDrive’s commitment to supporting the communities it serves.

The doXgetY programme was introduced in response to the escalating cost of living in Nigeria. Its goal was to alleviate the financial burden on drivers by offering a rewards programme. This initiative provided high-performing inDrive drivers in Lagos and Abuja with prizes such as fuel vouchers and other incentives, helping them manage operational costs during these challenging economic times.

Throughout the campaign, which ran from March 25th, 2024 to July 31st, 2024, drivers who registered on the inDrive platform and completed the required number of trips within the indicated timeline were eligible to participate. Every two weeks, winners were selected to receive the rewards, motivating them to continue their hard work and dedication.

At the grand finale, the three-star prize winners were honoured with IVM cars, celebrating their outstanding performance and loyalty to the inDrive platform.

Timothy Oladimeji, Business Development Manager at inDrive Nigeria, spoke at the event, highlighting the programme’s success and the company’s unwavering dedication to driver welfare.

“The success of this campaign is a testament to inDrive’s growing influence and our commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who rely on our services,” he said.

Oladimeji further emphasised that inDrive’s mission goes beyond providing rides; it is about creating experiences that resonate with users and contribute to a fairer, more equitable industry.

“With campaigns like doXgetY, we demonstrate our dedication to inclusivity and economic opportunity. Our people-centric approach, where fares are negotiated directly between riders and drivers, remains at the core of our mission to be a human-tech company that prioritises fairness and transparency,” he added.

About inDrive
inDrive is a global mobility and urban services platform. The inDrive app has been downloaded over 240 million times and was the second most downloaded mobility app in 2022 and 2023. As we gather to celebrate the 2024 International Youth Day and the S.M.I.L.E Youth Leadership Summit, we are reminded of the boundless potential that resides within our youth. This year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” is not just a catchphrase—it’s a call to action.

It’s a call to recognize the immense power that young people hold in shaping our world, especially in this digital age. Our world has never been more connected. A single click can spark a movement, a post can ignite a revolution, and a tweet can topple barriers. But beyond these digital gestures lies the real challenge: transforming these clicks into tangible progress.

Our youth are not just digital natives; they are visionaries, innovators, and leaders in the making. They are the ones who will navigate us through the complexities of the future, using technology not just as a tool, but as a bridge to sustainable development.

The summit opens with warm welcome remarks from Tunde Mabawonku, Executive Director of Retail and Digital Banking at Wema Bank, and a dedicated member of the Board of Trustees of S.M.I.L.E. Mabawonku sets the tone for an impactful event through his welcome remarks reflect a deep commitment to supporting the next generation of leaders and innovators, acknowledging the transformative impact that young people have on both local communities and the global stage.

Following this, the summit is graced with a powerful message from the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres. In his address read by Ronald Kayanja, Guterres underscores the significance of International Youth Day as a moment to reflect on the critical role that young people play in building a sustainable future. His words resonate with the urgency of the times, highlighting how the energy, innovation, and determination of youth are essential to addressing global challenges, from climate change to inequality.

Special remarks by the Director of the United Nations Information Centre Nigeria further set the tone for the day. The Director emphasizes the importance of youth engagement in global initiatives and how their voices are pivotal in shaping policies that affect their futures. These opening speeches remind us that International Youth Day is not just a celebration; it’s a call to empower and support young people as they lead the charge towards a better world.

In an insightful keynote, Nkem Nweke, Renowned Product, Design, and Innovation Consultant explored the transformative impact of technology on the youth of today, who are poised to become the visionaries of tomorrow. The event highlighted the impact of podcasts in sparking conversations and fostering a sense of community, with key takeaways on optimizing content creation and distribution, balancing creative freedom with commercial considerations, and the importance of collaborative work in the Nigerian creative industry.

Rufai Oseni emphasised the need for commercialisation of verticals, amplification across platforms, and content optimization. Lanre Olusola stressed understanding production costs, identifying target audiences, and effective talent management. Reuben Abati discussed the challenges of collaborative work, emphasizing clear definitions of roles and rights.
